This is probably the final shot from my trip to the beach with Rhowan and Harmony last Friday, and it's by far and away my favourite of the three.
Update #2: I've spent most of today fixing various coding problems with the new backend to the tutorials section of the site and have transferred the first section of a Curves tutorial onto the new pages. If you'd like to see what's there so far you can do so via this page:
I'll be spending the next couple of days finishing off the Curves tutorial so doubt I'll have too much time for taking photographs. If I do manage to take something, I'll post it, but if not then I'll get something up later in the week.
Update: as most of you know, we've been promising some online tutorials for what seems like forever. We're still behind schedule, but, assuming that I don't fall asleep any time soon, there will be one of the basic tutorials available at some point tomorrow. I've been coding all day (trying to sort out some residual problems with the back-end to the tutorials pages) but am now transferring an introductory Curves tutorial onto the site. I had intended to make it available as a PDF, but we've decided that the introductory modules would be better placed on the site itself.
Anyway, the consequence of all this is that I don't have anything to put up tonight.

Richard: thanks, and yes, this does capture them quite well. Rhowan (in the foreground) is more contemplative while Harmony is somewhat more outgoing and "bouncy" :-)

my favorite beach photo of yours yet. i haven't visited here in a while in fear that it would inspire me to go take more photos and ditch out on school... and my worst fears have come true :)
It's been a while since I stopped by to comment, but that startling 'M' composition, the wonderful light and the amazing tonality deserve more than a few words of praise.
Belated congratulations on the new arrival btw; I wonder how many of the Nightingale team will also become noted photographers...have any of them asked for their own 1Ds Mark III yet?

This is a wonderful photograph! There is everything right about it, composition and post-processing. David, this is really the best of your recent work!

Congrats on the new babe. Sorry to be so late with my good wishes.

I love this trio of photos you have done of your girls at the beach - and how nice that you took them on an outing after the arrival of the new baby! I bet it meant the world to them.
I read back through the past few days of comments, and I hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in here... I sometimes wonder how you don't "lose it" and post a mouthful of nasty things in reply to some of the posts people leave.
Constructive criticism is one thing, but some of those posts have been rather (I would feel) personal in there criticizing. I think some people need to realize that a blog is something one does on the side; it is not the reason for which people wake up everyday (at least I hope not). There are a few people in this world who earn their livings from blogs, but since I don't see any ad space on this blog, I am assuming it is not done for the families income.
Art is subjective, and Mark may find what he appreciates now at this point in his life is completely different from what he appreciates in a few years from now. I know that I am loving the kid photos, and the baby photos very much, but family is my focus at this time in my life. Perhaps the pictures don't have the instant "wow" appeal that some photos may have, but to the people whose children they are, those photos are the best they have seen.
I hope I haven't overstepped here, but some comments get to me.

Your children are absolutely adorable. Photographically speaking, I'm loving the soft hue you added to the picture. It's not quite black and white, and its not quite color either. It's just...soft, and gentle like a child.
Nice David. Very Nice indeed.

Oh, yes, this is a lovely one! They'll have such special reminders of their childhoods. I'd love to have some pictures of my children like this.

To add what swoozyq said about her feelings about the photos of children, I too love to see your captures of children, and actually people in general. I like your other photos as well (with some exceptions), but your portraits have such an energy about them and always convey exquisite detail/attention to the subject.
That said, this is definitely one of my all-time favorite photos of yours, ever. Like others have said, the composition is so striking (no pun intended there).

I really rather like this shot. It is obvious why, with only a little analysis. The juxtaposition between the two is just perfect. A really excellent composition. I also like the side-on positioning of Rhowan's (I must be right now) head. Almost like the pose of a model.
This is obviously a candid shot but so beautifully timed.

Perfect image
Great poses - I liked the colour in the previous two though. The toning is good and well done but I'd just like to see it in colour.
Your girls are such rock stars!

Nice, nice shot. One of my favorites of the girls.
Wow. This is great. I like the action in background....famous composition and models.
This is a great shot. Congratulations! Stewart.
Beautiful shot, David. A favorite of mine for the series as well. Captures playfulness of the kids so well...
