I picked my laptop up today, with it's new hard drive, and was dreading having to reinstall everything. Well, not dreading as such, more wishing that I could use the time for something else. But I needn't have worried, as the optical drive has now failed too so I can't install anything at all. I did manage to install Office, but when I tried to insert my Photoshop CD the drive wouldn't let me. From what I can work out there's a pin that engages after a CD is inserted that's now stuck. So, that's another day that I'll be wasting next week taking it back for repair.

Technology is a marvellous thing – when it works. When it doesn't it's a complete and utter pain.

As for this shot: again, it won't appeal to all of you, but there's something about it's simplicity that appeals to me.

Nicely observed and an interesting mix of textures, lines and patterns.

comment by YETi at 09:51 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2007

I agree it is the simplicity of this shot that appeals, you do that so well I think. I reckon you could even make a turd looking interesting, may be a challenge tucked away in there :D

Excellent - had I better qualify that do you think ;-D Hope your trip south was rewarding. PS hope Hungary wins - anyone else watching?!

Wow! Awesome! Superb! Great tones! Fantastic colours! Superb! (did I say that one already?) ;)

I'm being mischievous Dave, forgive me. I like it...it's John with colour ;) Sorry to hear about your technological woes....it really pisses you off when it turns against you, eh!

Oh and YETi...I don't really think he could go that far ;)

You feel tired and worn after endless days at the beach. This photo fits that well. Plus it's got the neat-o intersecting lines.

comment by mikelangelo at 03:04 AM (GMT) on 13 May, 2007

I love the angles, the monochrome color palette, and the contrast in materials. Good shot!

comment by Furanku at 06:45 AM (GMT) on 13 May, 2007

It has a nice evocative power : yacht, deck, longchair, not that sunny afternoon perfect for relaxing...

comment by peter at 07:58 AM (GMT) on 13 May, 2007

I like the restricted colour palette and the various textures and lines. All in all a very nice shot.

comment by Roy at 09:00 AM (GMT) on 13 May, 2007

There is a perfect balance about this composition that I find very satisfying; coupled with the tones and textures it makes a very pleasing picture.

You are jinxed Dave, remind us all not to buy any electronic goods from you! lol

I really like these mute tones, the simplicity of the image suits the subtle work that you have done. mal

This is a fantastic shot, David! I really like the colors and the simplicity. Very nice composition too. Good luck with the computer. They sure can be a pain at times, so I feel for you. :-)

comment by 24by36 at 03:00 AM (GMT) on 15 May, 2007

Shots like this really appeal to me. Great choice with the desaturation. The patterns and textures are enough to carry this shot by itself.

comment by ling at 07:55 AM (GMT) on 15 May, 2007

you have this amazing gift of taking something simple and making a great picture out of it.
I love this shot. How we often ignore simplicity when actually sometimes, simplicity creates a greater image than those complicated ones.
Good job and sad to hear about the laptop. Hope all is well.

comment by Ronald at 11:11 AM (GMT) on 15 May, 2007

Contrasting lines and fabrics..
Love the knot giving it a different direction...
Very strong shot!

comment by JD at 09:02 AM (GMT) on 16 May, 2007

really great shot, love hte textures and the contrasts... the light is beautiful

as for your macbook drive... I think you should make a formal complaint... I was told that I should purchase some extra support for mine (mac procare=£79) just so I can get it serviced faster...
I think they should accept that maybe some models are complete duds and its just a matter of time before each of the parts individually fail. I really wish I could just get a refund or at least a "proper" exchange on the item.... my confidence in apple is extremely low :(

Nice. Like one of those hand-colored vintage photographs.

comment by Photo Buffet at 03:34 PM (GMT) on 17 May, 2007

How typical of a creative mind to turn to a simple shot (I like it!) after a chaotic day wrestling with technology. You're right--technology is great when it works, but can be such a pain when it doesn't. Hope you remedy that problem soon!

comment by Daniel A. Norman at 07:47 PM (GMT) on 17 May, 2007

Really nice image

comment by Jeremy at 07:48 PM (GMT) on 17 May, 2007

Perfect example of creating art out of 'nothing'.

comment by Flower photo qt at 01:43 PM (GMT) on 18 May, 2007

nice and simple. I like it alot! Good work.

comment by Malcolm at 02:17 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2007

Just thought I'd say well done on the piece in 'Digital SLR User' (http://www.dslruser.co.uk/viewpage.php?page_id=1). I was interested that you did not focus on the eyes for the picture on p27. Oh, and I really like this image. The composition of triangles works well, but needs the rope and eyelet to complete it.

comment by Deb at 04:23 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2007

Very 'New England' (which I love).
