This isn't quite in the same league as the original SG-Blackpool, nor SG-Blackpool #2, but I did think it was sufficiently striking to warrant the same title. Let me know what you think.

Wow! Great work not sure how you avoided getting the person holding it and the lines into the picture (I assume it wasn't floating freely), it looks like a jellyfish floating above the seabed, the colors are also great with the shute colorful against the more muted background, amazing capture!

comment by Angry Buddha at 07:19 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Nice work. It is sufficiently striking.

comment by Pete at 07:32 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

It looks incredibly good to me! I was up at South Shore today and didn't see this one amongst the others - I've had to upload an Octopus today instead :-)

Awesome processing (as always!)

comment by Laura at 07:39 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Wow, this looks amazing!

comment by E y e V i s i o n at 07:43 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

This looks amazing! I like the highly saturated parachute(?) in contrast with the murky background. It looks quite surreal as no ropes are visible. Have you cloned them out?

comment by marcello at 07:51 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

from the thumbnail of vfxy I said, hey that's chromasia! and i was right!

comment by Phil at 07:57 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Very beautiful, I prefer this one !

comment by Kevin H. Stecyk at 08:04 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

An absolutely gorgeous shot. I love the bright, brilliant, saturated colors against the dark threatening sky.

I am curious as to how you manage to isolate just the kite and make its color pop while leaving the rest of the photo slightly desaturated.

Wonderfully done. :-)

comment by Daniel at 08:20 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Amazing work here. I think this one is in the same league as the others.

comment by Magnus von Koeller at 08:37 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

To be quite honest with you, I never got the whole hype around the first two shots you mention. I like this a lot better. Nice work.

comment by Ruben Vermeersch at 08:45 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Crystal sharp, wonderful colors. I think this one deserves to share it's name with the previous two. Nice work!

comment by doreen at 09:02 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

very nice =)
am anxious to hear the answers to kevin and eye vision's questions hehe

comment by Keith De-Lin at 09:07 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

wow, those colors are so vibrant.

comment by djn1 at 09:24 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Thanks :-)

E y e V i s i o n: the anchor point and the guy holding the rope are masked by the kite, so no, no cloning.

Kevin: this one uses three basic masks: one for the kite, one for the foreground, and one for the sky. The latter two are blended into one another.

comment by miChou at 09:50 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Plain amazing!
Now I realize why you did say that the picture from yesterday was "the least favourite" :)

Thanks for giving me a reason to smile ~every day :)

comment by mikelangelo at 10:05 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

I really like this one. I find it much more appealing than the other two you mentioned. I prefer the composition in this one for one and somehow the processing is more striking to me as well. vey nicely done!

comment by Kevin H. Stecyk at 10:22 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Thank you David for your response. :-)

comment by m at 10:27 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

True not as good as the original SG, but I like better than number two so I think a worthy member of the SG stable.

comment by Paulo Jorge Oliveira at 10:29 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

Amazing, AGAIN!

comment by Robert at 10:36 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

I think the somewhat surreal darkness on the blue and flat tan sand make a great balance to the spring-fresh kite colors.

comment by freddy at 10:41 PM (GMT) on 28 May, 2007

this is one photography!!!
Here I recognize the genius and the art of David J. Nightingale.

where ever you rank it in your mind Dave is almost unimportant! the image is fantastic, really great work. mal

comment by spleen at 12:24 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

my favourite one is SG-Blackpool. I think the contrast between the colours and the background was really emotional in that picture.
but this one too is wonderful!

comment by 360 Pixels at 04:20 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

Honestly, this is my favorite one of the three.

comment by 西皮士 at 05:54 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

很久没见过这么好看的图了!
我喜欢鲜艳与淡雅的对比!
你是怎么做到的!

comment by navin at 06:22 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

I like the processing. I like the bright colors of the kite against the muted background

comment by lisa at 07:12 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

Sick shot. And of course, sick in the ridiculously good way, hehe.

comment by Mark at 08:03 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

DJN, of the three, you newest one is my favorite. I thought the first one was remarkable, but the new one is more striking. The shadow on the sand makes the image more balanced and interesting than the first two.

comment by peter at 08:06 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

The vivid colours of the kite make this photo pop. I quite like the surreal feel to it.

comment by Roy at 08:18 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

I wonder what it is about this incredibly rich eye food that is so appealing to our visual cortex? SG-Blackpool particularly, but this as well, satisfies some craving or other and is a pleasure to look at. Someone has already mentioned that the image structure and colouring is 'emotional' - and it's true.

comment by Ronald at 10:23 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

Sufficiently striking indeed!
This one certainly has the "WOW-factor"!
SG-Blackpool#3...yes my friend, the title is correctly chosen... keep on going, love to see a series growing out of this.

comment by mooch at 11:20 AM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

I like this. The sky, the vivid colours. Very striking. I also like the fact that you cannot see any of the lines that connect to it. Gives an almost surreal edge to the image.

comment by Régis at 12:15 PM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

Wow, this looks just incredible. Is it true ??

comment by Alice at 02:45 PM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

I love this one! Fantastic colors and the absense of anything else in the frame gives it an almost surreal quality. Nicely done!

comment by Gavin at 04:37 PM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

I think this one is in the same league, definitely. The strong vibrant colours against the sky work wonders. It's so crisp and clear.

comment by birgit at 07:35 PM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

damn! such nice composition and colors! it´s great!!!

comment by Wolfgang Burzler at 08:16 PM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

Wonderful colours, I like this symmetry and the contrast to the background.

comment by Steve Tainton at 10:04 PM (GMT) on 29 May, 2007

I love the strong saturated colours of the Kite against the muted almost monotone background, well seen and pihotographed with a cracking off centre composition. David you are inspiring and I visit the blog daily with eager anticipation.

comment by Sharla at 02:41 AM (GMT) on 30 May, 2007

So much for my "photographic memory." While I thought this to be a very nice shot, it didn't match my memory of your original kite shot. Then when I looked again at the original, I decided I really liked this one too, for different reasons. The sharpness and balance that you've achieved with your masks make it an outstanding capture. I really like the abscence of controller and strings (nearly invisible), and how it "floats" in the air, like a jellyfish in water. The light is heavenly (literally). My biggest reservation is how the sky is split because of the light cloud on the left and the way the cloud edge intersects the kite. What? Nature actually does treat you occasionally the way it treats the rest of us? :-)

comment by orange at 04:18 AM (GMT) on 30 May, 2007

I totally disagree...This is by far the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

comment by pierre at 07:47 AM (GMT) on 30 May, 2007

that's striking enough, well done

comment by Audrey Mottishaw at 08:15 AM (GMT) on 30 May, 2007

An amazing shot. The sky and sea appear to be subtly toned, and with the amazingly saturated colours of kite? it would 'make one' for my wall.

I just love it. The positioning too is spot on. Fantastic.

comment by &Once at 11:25 AM (GMT) on 30 May, 2007

Spectacular image.

comment by Evi at 03:23 PM (GMT) on 30 May, 2007

It's a wonderful image ... the colours are great ... a awesome rendering !

comment by Dave Gibbeson at 01:38 AM (GMT) on 1 June, 2007

The colours in the chute are brilliantly vivid and I love the sky. A great mood, quite mystical I'd say. 10/10

comment by Rob at 03:34 AM (GMT) on 1 June, 2007

I'm a big fan of the original and I also like this one Dave. I also love that you were back to the beach yet again. My favs are from when you are there.

really nice color!!!

Love the colors. Very nice.

comment by Graeme Baynes at 05:45 AM (GMT) on 3 June, 2007

David,
Clearly my favourite of the 3 is this one. More for the vibrance and the thought provoking it involves wondering what is holding it there.
Fantastic

comment by Mark at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 4 June, 2007

This shot just inspired me to grab my camera and get out shooting, the highest compliment I know how to give.
Simply another jaw dropping shot, great PP as well.
