As many of you will be aware, the vast majority of the portraits I post (of adults or children) aren't posed; i.e. they're spur of the moment shots of our children, people in the street, and so on.

For the job in Nassau though the majority of the shots involved photographing two models – Ryan Elliott and Fiona Brattle – in a variety of locations, clothes, poses, and so on. I guess that if you're used to shooting models, it isn't something you think about, at least not overtly, but I found it a really interesting and rewarding experience. Normally, my portraits are an attempt to capture a naturally occurring moment, in and amongst everything else that happens to be going on. When shots are posed though, it's a bit of a different story; i.e. what constitutes a "naturally occurring moment" is partly decided beforehand and then the shot is constructed accordingly.

The shots I'll be posting of Ryan and Fiona aren't any of the ones I shot for the commission and all were taken in one of two locations: in between the commissioned shots taken on a boat trip and on the beach one evening, when we had a bit of free time. Some were impromptu shots, others were directed by Ryan and Fiona.

As always, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Congratulations Dave, you are now a professional photographer :-)

What an unusual picture for you Dave!
This proves that you're capable of not only landscapes, but also portrets

comment by milou at 08:36 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

Are they unhappy being in Nassau or just pouty? Good rich tones and the light is great. Nice one.

comment by Flemming Hansen at 08:42 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

Damn, they look as if they just survived a nuclear blast - all orange and radiating.
Definitely over-processed...

comment by PJ at 08:45 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

Excellent shot! Very powerful.. I love the vibrancy of the colors, as well as the effectivenesss of the DOF. Having nothing to do with your skills, however, I do find the models a wee bit disturbing. ;-)

comment by djn1 at 08:51 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

milou: I'll post a smiley shot tomorrow ;-)

Flemming: this is pretty much as-shot; i.e. they're both tanned and the sun was just about to set.

PJ: I'll post a smiley shot tomorrow ;-)

Chuckle - thought I'd clicked on the wrong site! Great shot , though I agree they should look a little happier, being where they are n all that!

comment by Dave at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

Superbly lit Dave, well angled, love it!

comment by Max at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

I like the shot but I think it's a little dark, even if the sun was about to set. Congrats on getting a paid gig on the beach!

comment by Sara at 09:35 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

It's fun to swap over into the fashion-style world. I did it about a year ago with BeeTour and am ecstatic that I did. The colors and the processing look great, it looks like the angle of the sun was a little harsh for them, especially with the way that Ryan is squinting. Maybe turning even 6 inches would've helped. I'm excited to see the rest of these!

Interesting...I wonder what these are for? I think I'll reserve my comments until I know.

Phwoar!

Shes fit!

On the photography side of things - good shot, esp. like the water in the foreground

comment by moonhead at 10:47 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2007

Canon 5d? - I take you didn't want to get your new Canon 1Ds Mark II wet!!
I like the girls eyes/expression but the chaps eyes are almost closed - and I'm not a fan of 'squinty eyes'.

comment by Robert at 12:21 AM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

The overall tone of the photo is interesting; different than the sunny happy mid-afternoon sort of thing. I also like the reflection of the water ripples on their skin.

Moonhead's got a point; the gut looks like he lost his glasses. See the darker line on the top of the girl's cheek? Combined with her expression, it looks like she's a victim of abuse. The overall impression: you just intruded on them and they're not happy about it at all.

Nassau, Bahamas? Oh well, someone's got to do it I suppose. :-)

Such deep color...

comment by TinaR at 08:22 AM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

Wounderfull portrait, I like the blue of the water in oposite of the deep colour of the skin! Well done!

comment by andyshon at 10:33 AM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

Welcome back. Sorry dude, don't mean to be nasty but this is horrible. The light is nice but the colours appear unnatural. Looks like fake tan and the blues of the see and sky clash. Expressions are arrogant, cold and unappealing. Looks like a promo shot for a James Bond porn spin-off. Sorry.....

comment by juniorbonner at 11:56 AM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

majorly stunning shot - great colours

comment by Jesse Watkins at 02:14 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

I think those colors stun the viewer. The reflecting water on their skin looks beautiful.

comment by riika at 02:19 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

So sensual and mysterious. Like from a bond movie :)

comment by Richard Trim at 04:47 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

Hi Dave ... I've not been around for a while. I must agree I tend to agree with Andyshone. Yes now being a professional you probably have to take on all sorts of commissions and of course the experience in Nassau was really useful. Shows excellent technical skills but I'm not sure that you have left your personal mark on this and possibly other shots that you suggest you might show from the trip. The image seems to have come straight out of a glossy film brochure. Sure you want to express a full spectrum of stuff on your blog ...but please not too much of this ....it's a bit too in your face. Shame you couldn't have got some softer expressions from them as it wasn't a shot for the commission. ''Can't please all of the people all of the time .........''

comment by djn1 at 07:16 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

Thanks all.

comment by Jason Dale at 09:40 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

I can see this shot has generated divided views, IMO the pose itself is a little over contrived however the lighting, DOF and colour work well together to create a very luxurious feel. I'd rahter be there than here any day of the week so I guess the shot works well ;-)

comment by alvin at 10:39 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2007

I think the color is too strong. But of course, it's a great shot.

comment by mikelangelo at 02:15 AM (GMT) on 3 September, 2007

I dig the depth of field. Technically, Ryan and Fiona are photographed very well. I really like the color/tones/etc. This makes me think of two stars that are ticked that the "paparazzi" is taking their picture. ;)

comment by Todd Baker at 03:09 AM (GMT) on 3 September, 2007

You wrote somewhere, though I can't remember where, that you finally considered yourself a "professional photographer". I chuckled at that, because I have thought that for quite some time. That transition manifests itself in this shot. By that, I mean it is a far more traditional "glamor" pose, as you alluded to in your comments but it has your fingerprints all over it. The color matching works perfectly....the golden skin against the deep blue water is well done and the DOF/focus is spot on. Only problem I see is that she seems angry with a little "Posh Spice" look....sorry, I'm over in America and that is a shameless Beckham/Spice plug!!

comment by garghe at 01:43 PM (GMT) on 3 September, 2007

Cool!!! I love this photo. I want to see this one as a Ck or D&g advertise on a magazine :)

comment by Mohamed at 09:17 PM (GMT) on 3 September, 2007

HI Dave, good to know you made it to Nassau finally. Great work! Hope the switch has been rewarding for you; I know its definitely been for me...

comment by Ronald at 09:50 PM (GMT) on 3 September, 2007

Indeed a movielike shot! Could be up on a billboard anytime. Davidoff? Glamour, thats what comes to my mind.
Love the colours, the right oily blue and the skintones.
"Doing"people is quite fun isn't it?!
Portraits are very rewarding I think... And you are good at it also!

comment by chiara at 07:24 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2007

I think this is a very beautiful shot. They do look very much like models and it does look posed but it doesn't look as fake because of their expressions I guess. Love the light and the color.

comment by Storm at 02:13 PM (GMT) on 10 September, 2007

Unlike in the other more natural shot where they are laughing, here they have the sulking child expression that is so common in model shots. What it really looks like is an image of two adults who are mentally retarded. I get really provoked by the intense stupidity of these model faces on posters everywhere.

I mean... I have model friends and they are as bright as the rest of us, but people in advertising idolize the blank looks of lower intelligence. I think it's a bit embarrassing to see. You are better than this!

comment by stijn at 11:15 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2007

beautifull colors the male's eyes look a bit strange but next to that stunning

i have the idea that your style has changed a bit over time :p its been a while that i visited your blog ... but they are still as stunning as before so its still great :D
