It's been a while since I posted any shots of the Wyre wrecks so I thought I'd put this one up. For once though, I ended up being really undecided about which of two versions I prefer. There's this one, and there's a colour version here:

Hmm...hard to decide. They're both nice, but I think the colour version edges it for me.

comment by Laura at 08:31 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

I like both versions a lot but I think I prefer the coloured one, since I always like good contrast and saturated colours.

comment by Susie at 09:03 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

The colour version for me too... I love the orange and green/blue contrast on the ship. I also love how the green grass looks so much like a beautiful sunny day kind of grass and yet the sky looks dramatic and a bit dark... more contrast but of a different sort. I find the black and white a bit bland for my taste.

comment by djn1 at 09:05 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

At this rate I'm going to need to switch them around then ;-)

comment by Stephanie at 09:17 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

I really prefer the b&w. i love it!

comment by Taylor Hain at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

Both are excellent, but the colour is the one that I prefer.

comment by Ash at 10:02 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

Sorry Dave, the vote goes to colour for me too. The B&W seems to blend too much :)

comment by m at 10:09 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

Easy to decide, the colour one.

comment by Jennifer at 10:20 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

B&W - much more atmospheric. Beautiful :-)

comment by nferreira at 10:26 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

The colored one, without a doubt. Much more dynamic and appealing visually.

comment by dp at 10:29 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

It might just be my poorly (i.e. non) calibrated work laptop, but the B&W wreak looks a little flat to me; the colour one definitely gets my vote for its rich, vibrant colours... Nice :)

comment by Malcolm at 10:31 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

Dave, don't liste to them. The colours are great, but the strength of the picture is in the composition. The monochrome one has just that and leaves you to enjoy the shape and the tones. Keep it up!

comment by dp at 10:33 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

OK, I take it back. Having tilted the laptop display to a strange angle, the B&W wreck (not wreak as suggested in my last post!) doesn't look at all flat now and the image looks much better.
...I still prefer the colour one, though.

comment by Alistair - Digiphotology at 10:35 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

I thought you had been back to the wrecks when I saw the cage you posted the other day. I was there myself today.

Whilst the B&W version appeals to me the colour version has lots of zip, more your style. The view looks wider than 24mm.

comment by Pierre at 10:46 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

The B&W is more dramatic, suits better to the subject than the color version, which is too "cheerful".

comment by Pete at 10:54 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

I'm also going to go with the colour version, although this B&W version is still excellent (especially the sky). Haven't been to these wrecks since last August, so I'm well overdue a trip.

comment by PJ at 11:40 PM (GMT) on 17 September, 2007

The color version has my vote. I think it shows off the contrast between the sunny and shady sides of the boat better than the B&W--especially with that flash of green on the orange rust at the top. A lovely shot...wonderful color saturation...great use of light...great composition...really like it A LOT.

comment by Mark [londonrubbish] at 12:02 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

Colour. Without a doubt. The B&W is good, but there's too much detail lost. The wreck pops out of the screen in the colour version.

comment by Saito at 01:45 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

I am a fan of the b/w version. I find the rust at the front of the boat a bit distracting. I really like the composition as well.

comment by crash at 02:57 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

whoa! amazing boat! odd hull design! looks like a Viking boat!

comment by doreen at 04:03 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

colour! the little details of the ship stand out more and make it a feast for the eyes

comment by Deepak Prakash at 05:44 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

I like the colour version much better since the awesome texture details on the boat as well as the clouds at the horizon are more or less lost in the b/w version...

Superb capture in any case! :)

comment by Sharla at 06:53 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

Color? What do they know? The b&sw is stronger, more real, and timeless. The object and the composition are the subject, not the paints used. I'm with Crash, it's a beached Viking ship. [Insert Norse war cry here.]

comment by Richard Trim at 06:55 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

This version is subtle and sophisticated ... the colour version is eye opening and extrovert!

comment by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at 08:05 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

At first glance it looked like a sculpture or something.

comment by Ronald at 10:17 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

Difficult decision...The colour version has my preference I think...
Somehow it has more depth in the shot..., more extravaganza too... the B&W version has more solitude and tragedy to it..but that may be very personal.

comment by Craig.judd@id7.co.uk at 10:22 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

Dave
I think you know my opinion on this one, they are both fantastic, but as I was there, peering over your shoulder whilst you edited it, and watched as you worked away, I reckon there is merit in both images for different reasons. The tonal range you squeezed out of the sky is superb and this image would work really well scaled up as a print. The colour one looks happier on the screen and would probably be TOO much for a print. So to that end, I reckon they both work. But again its subjective. And I need a new lens having seen this shot. Great shot. I love the reflection in the hull of the boat.

comment by lew at 11:13 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

Hi, just a word to simply say that I love your work here, and I wish I could talk more about what I feel with each pictures, but my english is very too bad (as you can see huhu) !

comment by Rodolphe at 11:18 AM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

BW got my vote. I especially like the rusted colors at the top of the wreck.

comment by jelb at 01:16 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

Bonjouèr,
Well done effect..good composition..bravo!

comment by claude at 04:41 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

I cannot really decide, they are both really superb. Wonderful shots!!!

comment by Fred at 06:38 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

i'd have to go with the color version as well. this one is great but the color one really pops.

comment by mahan at 06:39 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

wowwwwwwwwwww! Noah boat! :D

comment by katie at 09:47 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2007

I really really like the color one better on this....usually your black and whites have a lot of depth as far as contrast goes, and this black and white one appears more grayish all around...I feel the color one jumps out at you more and is more powerful. I love both, but my vote is for the color! :)

comment by Richard H at 03:59 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2007

I really liked the duotone when I saw it. It's dark, contrasty, very nice.
Then when I saw the colour version, I think I liked it better. The colour really adds separation of the wreck from the rest of the image.
Either way, these are winners.
(don't you hate it when you can't decide which copy of an image you like better?)

comment by Jamey at 04:45 PM (GMT) on 19 September, 2007

Mono version, easily.... Which isn't to say I wouldn't like a colour version, I just don't like that particular colour version. Would prefer less saturation and more moody toning and then the colour might beat the mono for me.

comment by Alex at 05:30 PM (GMT) on 19 September, 2007

Deffinitely the one have posted! I love the tone! Would be cool to see how you got it in the tutorials.

comment by Jamie at 05:33 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2007

Wow, great tonal range.

comment by Dominik Wójcicki at 05:10 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2007

Wow

comment by Steve at 05:05 PM (GMT) on 24 September, 2007

Is it just me or is there a modern trend towards much darker images? I don't mean dark emotionally (however it does give that feel too) but simply B&W intensity! I think this really works but I would be interested to see the same print lightened up!

Wonderful shot, and processing :)

A dramatic power leaps of my monitor as I view this. Sensational work.
