We had a Halloween party for the kids this evening, which should have been a great opportunity for photographs, but most of the ones I took were were terrible, mostly because I was shooting at f/1.4. This was intentional, but the DoF at that aperture is so shallow it's very easy to get the focus wrong. This one though, I like.

Welldone for getting any photos at all, we did the same last weekend, and I failed on all counts to photograph the kids, apart from one image shot on a mobile phone, which was ok, so you did very well mate........keep it up....csj

Were you shooting them all at 100 as well? Not surprised you had to open all the way up!

Beautiful portrait; and it makes a nice change from all the usual Hallowe'en party shots ;-)

Surely this shot must have been worth sacrificing a few bad ones for... I especially like the blurred out cross necklace,plus of the course the facial expression is priceless. Just happened to bump into one of your bloggers downunder this week. Djaef has been following your blog for almost as long as you've got it running. Small world huh ;-)

Fantastic! I love the emotions that you captured.

One of the freshest shoots possible :-)
Things which I like here:
- The 90 degrees angle between the 2 figures;
- The attention catching detail of that cross;
- The luminosity gap between the black dress and the skin tones;
After all, I believe much of the success of this image relays on the out of focus figure... Lovely done, David.

Hey Dave,
I saw you also use the Canon lense 50mm f/1,4. I would like to know which pictures on your site you've taken with this lense. Do you have at least 2 or 3 example links.
I have ordered this lense today and I recognized today that you have this lense already.
