While I was photographing Kate and Thomas's wedding a few weeks ago another party arrived at the venue, and while it's not exactly the sort of shot that's liable to end up in anyone's album, I'm really pleased with it.

a great candid shot! but i agree, i'm not sure she would want this one in the album lol!

That is a great image: the toning and selective colours work really well.

I think that it's such a fun shot... seeing the bride strolling up while having a smoke is priceless, it seems to take the whole beauty and elegance away from the bride
comment by Max at 12:42 AM (GMT) on 12 November, 2007
God bless England, the last place on the planet where smoking is still acceptable. Great shot.
comment by jkm at 12:53 AM (GMT) on 12 November, 2007
Love it, a real 'behind the scenes' shot. Colours are awesome, vibrant and yet grim. I love the little red dot in the traffic light in the background. I am with Marc as far as the bride is concerned - yikes...
comment by brooks at 05:37 AM (GMT) on 12 November, 2007
i love it. the desaturated foreground works so well. what are the chances that any of the upcoming tutorials will include how to and blur effectively?? i feel like this is one aspect that really makes your photos stand out.
comment byowen-b at 07:47 AM (GMT) on 12 November, 2007
Brooks: blurring is generally achieved by using an appropriate aperture, which either softens or sharpens the foreground and background elements around the focal point. The tighter the lens, the more pronounced the effect. Dave was probably standing well on the other side of the foreground steps, zooming past them, hence they went soft.
Incidentally, Dave, my details are never remembered in Safari 3 on Leopard. Is this a problem at my end, yours, or Apple's? :)

Now that's what I call a real wedding shot.

One last ciggy before the nuptials. Great shot, love the capture and the tone of it, you don't often see moody wedding shots. Doubt they would want to use it, but a really good photo.

Dave Ha! ... This is the stufff .... but surely I haven't influenced you this much ? ;-) richard.

This is a neat shot!

At last Dave - you've taken a wedding shot that I actually like - why ? - Because its REAL and makes a great (future) social documentary record of early 21C Britain.
comment by Oli at 09:30 AM (GMT) on 12 November, 2007
Blackpool. Fantastic.
It's at once a brilliant and dreadful photo. Artistically wonderful, but an unfortunate moment for those in the shot. I'm sure that a few moments before or after would capture the excitement and pride of everyone involved.
As mentioned above, it's not often you get "real" wedding shots like this. Great timing.
I now have your site on an RSS feeder - I really like the majority of your shots.

It certainly tells a better story than any 'official' photos would.

Thanks all.
Max: even England has turned against smoking now. It's still ok in public, but has now been banned in all buildings.
brooks: as owen mentioned this is more easily achieved by selecting a wider aperture rather than using PS, but it is a topic I'll probably cover at some point.
owen: I have no idea why leopard/safari doesn't remember your settings but you might want to check your security settings. It isn't anything at my end, at least not that I'm aware of.
moonhead: I know what you're mean, but they're all real - it's just that some are more 'behind the scenes' than others.
Oli: it was taken in Leeds rather than Blackpool, but I guess it's a northern thing.
