Normally, when Rhowan (on the left) and Harmony are sat together watching television, Harmony will concentrate and Rhowan will mess about – she has the attention span of a gnat. But on this occasion she was really paying attention while Harmony was messing about. Rhowan mostly managed to ignore her, but as you can see from the last of the four shots, Harmony finally got to her. I can't remember exactly what Rhowan said to cause Harmony's look of horror, but it wasn't pleasant ;-)
Oh, and the reason I've posted them as a sequence is that I didn't think any of the shots were strong enough to post on their own, but did think they told a good story.
On another matter: I have some family stuff to deal with over the next day or so and don't have any material in reserve, so don't worry if I don't put anything up. Hopefully I'll find the time to shoot something, but it may not be possible.

Lovely sequence of shots. It makes a very interesting character study.

Theatrical is what it amounts to David and the other ingrediant is of course sibling rivalry. I would say your kids are absolutely normal. Ten out of ten. richard ;-)

I have to disagree with you. The four photos all together tells a story of what is happening, but each one can stand out and speak about your daughters expressions. I particularly like the third photo. Harmony's expression is very funny and Rhowan's attention is at peak.
Oh, and good choice with the b&w.
comment byJenny at 09:23 PM (GMT) on 9 December, 2007
Ah, lovely sequence -- and it tells a very cute story. :D Odd to say, but nicely put in for Christmas -- sets that mood.
comment byPierre at 09:27 PM (GMT) on 9 December, 2007
The fourth one, the end of the story can stand on its own. The contrast in the children's expressions is very eloquent.

Excellent as always, but Family comes first, go focus on that, and we'll see you back here when the dust has settled. CSJ

Gosh Dave you and Libby have some beautiful children. These do make a nice set. That last one - lower right - is priceless.

Dave you should truly feel (as i'm sure you do) blessed to have such beautiful daughters. You do an outstanding job of truly capturing them and these pics (and all the others) will be priceless as their youth gradually fades away.
comment byAndrew at 06:24 AM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007
Lol!
I can almost hear music playing for the first three frames, just to hear the needle get yanked across the record for the last. It's all fun and games until Rhowan gets annoyed...
comment by Matt Perry at 08:56 AM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007
Great sequence and that last shot is priceless. I have to ask though, with Rhowan concentrating on the TV was she not getting a bit irritated with your 580EX flashing at her every few moments, or has she learnt to just ignore dad by now?!
comment bypierre at 09:01 AM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007

comment by Daz Vernon at 12:11 PM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007
I have to agree with other comments, they are all stand-out shots although number four is the best. I reckon that the third in the sequence shows that whatever was said by Harmony was very carefully considered before being delivered. Thanks for sharing the moment.
comment by jkm at 12:33 PM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007
They obviously got their mother's looks ;-).... Absolutely brilliant sequence! Can I say something controversial though? I find Harmony's lips disturbing in Pic #1 and #3 a little unnatural looking vs #2 and #4 and compared to Rhowan's lips. 4th shot says it all - FAB! Gd luck on the home front.
comment by Noel at 01:36 PM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007
sorry this is off topic, but I am buying a new Mac and wondered if anyone has experience of their 'Aperture' imaging software. There seem to be loads of sites reviewing/discussing cameras and lenses etc, but I can't find anone talking about software.
...and djn, I am constantly in awe of the vast majority of the stuff you post here. What would you have as the minimum software requirements for the stuff you do? Thx

JKM, I think perhaps she may need a little balm to fix her lips. They just seem a bit chapped... can that be smoothed out in post processing?
comment bydjn1 at 09:32 PM (GMT) on 10 December, 2007
Thanks everyone.
Matt: all the kids, other than Finley (who's two) and Tabby (8 months), don't seem to notice the camera. Finley, on the other hand, stands right in front of it and Tabby tries to eat it ;-)
jkm: are you sure you mean Harmony's lips (i.e. on the right of the shot)? If so, what do you find disturbing?
Noel: I use Aperture on a Macbook Pro, though I tend to use it for cataloguing images rather than any serious editing. As for minimum software requirements: Photoshop, preferrably CS3, as it runs much better on the latest Intel Macs, but CS2 will do. There are various other plugins and other bits of software I also use, but most of my stuff could be done with just Photoshop.

I agree with everyone else in that the 4th photos has got to be the best. Absolutely fantastic expressions :) Rhowan must have said something quite nasty to get that expression on Harmony's face.
comment by jkm at 05:30 AM (GMT) on 11 December, 2007
Me again, I just feel that Harmony's lips look over-processed and too dark. I know she is pulling a funny face in #1 but it is being exaggerated by them being so dark. In #3 they just stand out so much because they are very dark and almost black around the edges. Just looks like she is wearing dark lipstick. The colour of her lips look natural in #2 and #4 compared to the others. Does that help?
comment by doreen at 09:34 AM (GMT) on 11 December, 2007
to jkm: i'm pretty sure that in pictures 1 and 3, harmony has her tongue stuck out and is licking her bottom lip. what you're seeing as an unnaturally dark/contorted bottom lip is actually her tongue, and the black space in between her tongue and her top lip is just the opening of her mouth. hope that helps.
