We took the kids down to the seafront this afternoon, and despite spending most of my time either hanging onto Finley, or chasing him when he did manage to give me the slip, I managed to get three shots that I'm happy with, of which this is the first. Libby's only comment was "he looks a bit girly in that one", and I suppose she has a point, but I like it.

Tight Dof on the main subject with unsharp elements both in front and behind the boy. That's cool. The shadow dividing the face by the middle is also very interesting.

I so often agree with Libby that I'm glad I can side with you on this one. Finley looks great, a great looking boy. Love the saturated color of the jacket and the preserved facial tones. As mentioned above, the split DOF does wonders. The eye wouldn't snap to Finley nearly so well of the front fence was competing for attention. Good one!

Libby's wrong--he looks handsome and mischievious. Love the colors and the lines and shadows.

finley george james nightingale? what a dreamy name ...
i really admire the DOF in this picture. with those fences in front of and behind finley, it could've gone wrong very easily, but you handled it so well.

Thanks everyone, apart from St Joe – who I suspect wasn't awarded his sainthood for his charitable work with children ;-)
Doreen: I named this one using all his forenames as his answer to a lot of questions, such as "are you a good boy?" and similar is currently "no, I'm Finley George James Nightingale!" :-)

everything about this photo is perfect. saturation, color, comp...all of it. the only one thing you could have done to improve upon it was to leave it standing on the front page for a day or two more. sometimes people aren't always ready to move on from something good. nom sain?
