beautiful b & w, I love the patterns in the sand. Wonderful scale.

comment by Justin Gaynor at 07:33 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

This is a really strong image, with beautiful tones. I would have preferred to see it cropped with just a little space above the clouds and buildings, as I'm not sure the top 15-20% of the image has much to offer. Really nice shot though.

comment by Sharla at 07:37 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

Oh, man, the zillion birds are just barely visible. This is one that deserves to be ordered as a print. For that and for the sweeping lines, the straight lines, the textures, the scale that the people add, the clarity, and for the great grays!

Oh, and for the boys skipping rocks, of course.

comment by Sara at 07:43 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

Absolutely gorgeous. Everything came together amazingly well in this photograph, the pier and the scale of it with the 4 people in the corner. The birds and the glistening water, the lighting is beautiful.

comment by Jasper at 07:43 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

I have to agree with you! I like it a lot. Love the toning and the composition!

comment by Jennifer at 07:50 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

Gorgeous - love the light and the birds.

comment by YETi at 07:52 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

My eye is moving all over this image capturing detail, from the thousands of starlings to the foreground interest of stone skipping. Yeah this is a belter!

comment by Craig Campbell at 07:54 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

Gorgeous image! LOVE the birds in the distance! Contrast is perfect.

comment by Jose at 08:06 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

A lovely moody image. I particularly like how the family and ripples of the stones hitting the water balances up against the grandeur of the pier and the birds throughout the depth of the image.

comment by JVL at 08:28 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

Wow, a fresh take on a pier you've shot(undoubtedly) hundreds of times before. Just goes to show how much it takes to get everything right.

There is so much going on in this image it's crazy to limit it to a computer screen - it's absolutely fit for an oversized print!

comment by Craig @ id7.co.uk at 09:28 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

a 6ft x 4ft giclee in the photographers gallery would be a nice way to view this image.... your handling of black and white in this is spot on... and more perfect timing..., I agree with Yeti on how the subject matter makes your eye scan the entire frame, really good.... csj

comment by PJ at 09:30 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

I DO like this one. The eye travels well...good use of the rivulets in composition. Nice tones/contrast--and use of the water reflection to achieve these. Nice shot!

comment by George at 10:16 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

But this is amazing! It looks like such a simple scene and yet there is so much going on. I hope you don't mind but this is my daily wallpaper. Thanks.

"This is probably my favourite of the shots I've posted in recent weeks."
...and rightly so. It's a great black and white image. There is a tremendous sense of fading light and the content is sublime.
comment by jkm at 10:33 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

Lovely! Great angle, the people give it some real depth and the tones are very complimentary to this photograph. Between the people, the birds and the pier, you have the viewer pretty much exploring all corners of the picture.

comment by Furanku at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2008

The way the pier stands against the people in the foreground, the clouds of birds in the background. You're definitely right, this one is a killer. And I agree with many: a laaaarge print would do justice to this one.

comment by JT at 12:03 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2008

Get rid of your other lenses. The 35mm is all you need.

comment by Jarrard at 03:19 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2008

Unbelievable. This is stunning. The curves of the ripples and the water on the sand simply fade into the sky, where is the horizon? The light reflections in the water provide the perfect balance for the pier. The straight lines of the supports don't clash with the curves of the water, they balance and meld with them. The range is incredible, and the entire image guides your eye to keep wandering. The curve taking you from the family across to the piere and up into the sky where you notice.... the birds! Wow. It's breathtaking, and those speckles of birds make it damn near perfect.

This is indeed a cracking image and you're right to say its one of the best shots for a while (thats not to say i've not liked the rest..!)
The tone, comosition/crop & everything just comes together really well!

My only comment is that I would have removed the smaller flock of birds on the right edge of the image. Just leaving the main flock in the distance.

comment by mooch at 12:12 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2008

I really like the tones to this shot. Great use of lead in lines to the right and I like the people as foreground interest.

Very nice angle and the perspective is amazing.. also love the b+w conversion. It's been a while since I was here commenting, i'm sorry. I'll try to get better.

comment by djn1 at 04:38 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2008

Thanks everyone, I was really pleased with this one too, so I'm glad you liked it.

Justin: I did think about cropping it down a bit, but I decided that I liked the space above the birds at the rightmost edge of the image.

JT: you could well be right ;-)

Chris: I can see what you mean about the smaller flock of birds, but I like that they add detail to that corner of the image.

comment by Bill at 05:35 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2008

What I really enjoy about this photo is the family in the bottom left and the kid throwing rocks into the pool of water like they were skipping stones on the water. This adds a human and warm feeling to the photo.

comment by m at 10:36 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2008

I like it. :-)

comment by cy at 03:27 AM (GMT) on 16 February, 2008

great composition, really nice tonal values.

comment by Thatch at 07:51 AM (GMT) on 16 February, 2008

I can see why your proud of this one. Great image.

comment by Robert at 01:29 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2008

There's so much going on, but instead of confusing the scene, the elements feel necessary. There's a lot going on in a quiet way. I disagree with Jason, as I think the top of the frame helps the scene feel big and expansive, and is a natural flow from the quiet family moment, to the bigger pier, to the open-sky, sort of stretching forever. I like that the distraction of color is gone; helps you concentrate on what each element is, and ties it all together. I can see why it's your recent favorite!

comment by Rich at 07:51 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2008

This is a beautiful image. The tones are great and the harsh angles of the pier contrasted with the flow of the water give the photo a nice balance. And the birds make you really look deep in the image to figure them out.

comment by Jessyel Ty Gonzalez at 08:10 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2008

Composition is near perfect. The people and ripples (!) in the lower left and the birds on the upper right. Great curves throughout, and just a darn great photo. Well done, David.

comment by Rob at 03:58 AM (GMT) on 20 February, 2008

Lovely image. One of the best recently for sure. Well done.

The composition and framing is out of this world. Brilliant.
