As you can probably imagine this was one of those shots that came together in an instant, and I almost missed it. The shot I thought I was after is this one:

.../archives/the_geometry_of_flight_2.php

I.e. I was waiting for both aeroplanes to reach the edge of the frame. Just after I'd taken that one though I noticed the seagull enter the frame from the right. I took a couple of shots as it approached this structure, and a couple after it flew past, but this was my definite favourite.

If you're interested, the original is here:

What I especially like about this one, other than the seagull, is the way the lens flare interacts with the structure; i.e. it almost looks like clouds until you realise that it passes in front of the structure.

And finally: this was converted to black and white using the Channel Mixer (as described in my Black and White tutorial) then toned using a Curve (covered in my Toning Colour Images tutorial).

Beautiful and perfect timing. The angle you were able to capture everything at really makes it interesting.

I'm going to stop posting for a while until I can see a subject in this way.... your eye for that was spot on, the angle is cool, the trick of the light is just right, and the finished result from the original is class.... csj

A little Daliesque--stretches the mind a bit.

comment by Andrew at 04:11 AM (GMT) on 21 March, 2008

You are totally correct about the lens flare, at least that was my exact impression when I first saw the photo. Well done, and the black and white makes it look amazing.

nice post-processing!

i always hear about that one perfect moment when everything comes together....guess, this roofs it is true. amazing.

It is interesting that this magnificent shot is so much better than the one you were trying to do. Your original pic is perfection, in angles and timing, capturing the vapor trails at just the right moment and getting two! The one you show us here is bettered only by the addition of a framed seagull, but is flawed with dwindling vapor trails and time has passed enough to catch the sun's flare.

Yet this is by far the superior shot. The jets would have diminshed this shot and the flare articulates the gull, bisects the other spreading angles, and brightens the shadow of the structure.

Art is such a wonderful thing!

Perfect composition! The bird definitely makes the shot ;-)

comment by Photography Forum at 02:06 PM (GMT) on 21 March, 2008

Great timing on the bird there! Feel free to share this on my photography forum -- my members would love to see this and it would be some great exposure for your photography as well.

This is wonderful - the angle, the dynamics, the skyt, the processing - everything! Yours knocks spots of something similar I tried last year!

comment by Kevin at 03:50 PM (GMT) on 21 March, 2008

absolutely incredible shot! in all aspects - composition, capture moment, concept, post-processing. This is the best photo I have seen in a while!

comment by John Maslowski at 04:09 PM (GMT) on 21 March, 2008

Excellent perspective and composition. Like all the lines and of course the sea gull is the icing on the cake.

comment by chiara at 05:14 PM (GMT) on 21 March, 2008

Superb!
Thanks for sharing the original. I learn a lot from your posprosseing techniques.

comment by djn1 at 08:14 PM (GMT) on 21 March, 2008

Thanks all.

rhys: it's a part of a footbridge that runs across the road on Blackpool's seafront.

csj: bad move. When I find that I'm struggling to see the only way I can get out of it is by taking more photographs; i.e. there's something about looking through a viewfinder that can get you back to the place you want to be.

Whitney: thanks, and no, I don't mind.

Sharla: the shot I was trying to get was technically spot-on, but it lacked the aesthetic immediacy of this one.

comment by Sean at 02:41 AM (GMT) on 22 March, 2008

Very nicely composed and I love this perspective. It's got great lines. I especially like the wispy clouds contrasting with the rough texture of the structure.

comment by kate at 03:42 AM (GMT) on 22 March, 2008

a bit late but agree w. RD- instant read is very Salvador Dali-like. Surreal! Success!

comment by Mario at 11:07 PM (GMT) on 23 March, 2008

fantastic shot! what timming!

comment by DedicatedRR at 09:46 PM (GMT) on 24 March, 2008

Powerful shot, the black and white works amazingly on this one!

comment by Rich at 08:55 AM (GMT) on 25 March, 2008

Holy cow Dave....... It's shots like these that make me simultaneously want to give up cause there's no point trying to better this (!) or grab the camera, leave the day job and wander the streets!

comment by ffclass at 08:42 AM (GMT) on 26 March, 2008

That's a stunner.
