Like yesterday's shot this is an HDR image constructed from a bracketed sequence of seven shots, spaced 1 EV apart. And also like yesterday's it was constructed with Photomatix Pro. Unlike yesterday's though, it wasn't taken in Blackpool, nor anywhere near. I'll probably tell you where I am tomorrow, but in the meanwhile I'd be interested to hear your guesses. What I can tell you is that regular visitors – i.e. those of you who have been visiting for over a year – may well have an advantage :-)

Also, one of the original sequence (the +1 EV original) is here:

.../archives/the_snow_queen_2.php

And for those of you who haven't been visiting long, the poster in this image is based on this one, a shot of my daughter Rhowan. In this instance it's being used to publicise an event I'm taking part in next week.

Oh, and this one looks much better with the black theme.

Hi Joseph - good to see you, even if you are wrong ;-)

Mohamed: thanks :-)

This is brilliant: it looks almost like a pen and ink drawing. There's something very futuristic about it too, which isn't present at all in the pastel shades of the original. I like the way that the only human presence is in the poster.

I guess you're doing the seminar thingumy again in D! Is that your wee lass on that poster - you must be head-lining ;-)

comment by Bill at 09:03 PM (GMT) on 21 April, 2008

Congratulations for that excellent poster using your daughter’s photo. It will definitely catch the eye of anyone walking by it. Thank you for including the original photo and the photo has a futuristic look to it. Maybe that is what your were going for?

Wow, mate you must be so proud and well chuffed even tho the streets are empty ;-).... fantastic when images get printed to that kind of scale..... wierd seeing it in this context when you know that you shot that outside your house whilst waiting for the rest of the clan to get ready for the beach!!!! ;-)

I love this photo and, most importantly, so does Rhowan :-)

No one found out yet?
It took me a few minutes of googling but I found out. I won´t give it away though. I believe that a certain Scott was there last week. He got back with quite a few really nice shots of that famous hotel.
Have a nice warm stay.

Nice shot and congrats on the poster and event. Given the subtle clues, could it be a return trip to China again?

comment by PhilB at 11:05 PM (GMT) on 21 April, 2008

Ok scratch that. I've got it now - it was only 'just' over a year ago though! ;-)

Hope everything goes well!

Wow...very nice. Looks like a sketch.

You'd better be in Dubai since I'm attending one of your workshops next week! Great picture by the way. I just hope some of it rubs off on me.

Great shot! Composition is spot on, and the processing really helps to hold my attention.

Thanks all, and MarkS is right - I'm in Dubai again, as one of the speakers at Gulf Photo Plus 2008.

Dubai - amazing place.

The Burj-al-Arab - The Dogs you know whats of hotels.

I like this shot - this may be a daft question: But if you use more shots when making the HDR (like you have, 7), is that going to result in a less blotchy picture than what you would finish with if you use say 3 photos?

Very creative work, especially the "poster" :)

Very nice shot. You must have felt proud to see the picture of your daughter there

comment by Jesse at 09:36 AM (GMT) on 22 April, 2008

I agree about this looking futuristic. Very sweet shot. I enjoy when the HDR images don't stick out like a sore thumb.

My guess is Australia, although I have absolutely no foundation whatsoever for that guess.

Tibs: I'll be covering that question in my next tutorial but yes, you get a cleaner image if you use a longer sequence of images. However, if you mean "blotchy" in the sense of uneven lighting, no, it doesn't make any difference - that's more to do with the amount of light smoothing you apply, assuming you're using Photomatix Pro.

One of the best images I have seen on your site. The framing of the arches, the perspetive and the slightly off-centred poster. Beutiful.
