The tall building you can see in the distance is the Burj Dubai, which earlier this month became the world's tallest structure at 629m – a shade over two thousand feet. When it's finished it's expected to exceed 700m and have over 160 floors. To put that in perspective, this shot was taken from round about the 34th floor of an apartment building; i.e. the Burj Dubai will eventually be around five times higher than this vantage point. When it's finished I'd really like to take a shot from the top :-)

I took two more shots from this building that I like, one of which I'll post tomorrow, the other of which will go up on Monday.

Oh, and many thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's image – they were much appreciated.

Awesome blue tone in this shot. Really cool!

Wow. Stunning shot. I like the lights' star shape.

comment by Parker at 08:08 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Fantastic picture! I'd really like a high-res version for a wallpaper! The construction going on all over Dubai is fascinating to me. What with Burj Dubai, Burj al-Arab, and The World (among others), I'm convinced that city is the most exciting place on earth today. :-)

i'm in awe.
gorgeous.

comment by Tibs at 08:21 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

This shot is awesome.

I was in Dubai last summer for a week and saw the building, and it was huge then, I can only imagine how it sticks out now.

Brilliant shot

Great shot!!

Love the lights! Great composition and emphasis on the Bury Dubai. Your vantage point is quite advantageous.

comment by Jeff T at 08:51 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Beautiful shot! Wonderful colors, especially for a nighttime shot. I like the mix of lighting, and the yellow scaffolding/elevator on the left helps add structure too.

comment by Jennifer at 08:57 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Brilliant - but would have been better with the M8 ;-D

comment by li at 09:01 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

not so good, like a random snapshot out of the window, you could do better

comment by Sven at 09:12 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Awesome image. When I saw the thumbnail in my reader I thought it's from Blade Runner. I especially enjoy the DOF in this one.

comment by Kevin H. Stecyk at 09:29 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Gorgeous image. I like all the pockets of light. They draw the audience in to looking at different parts of the photograph. And I like the blue (cool) and red (warm) contrasting tones. Excellent image. : )

comment by Garry at 09:43 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Fantastic image although I do find the railing in the bottom left very slightly distracting.
The whole thing is like a crossover of reality and the world of Tron (the incredible eighties classic film)...

comment by Sean at 09:44 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Looks like it's straight out of Blade Runner.

Love that "Vevlia" look in the green lights. Splendid!

comment by Paul at 11:50 PM (GMT) on 24 April, 2008

Of course I realised I misspelled Velvia as soon as I clicked "post"!

I actually just read about that building today in a newsletter handed out at work. Apparently a branch of the company I work for has a hand an this (somehow, I didn't read in detail, but I will tomorrow since it seems to keep creeping up today) Also, it is Burj Dubai, not Bury Dubai... Anyhow as fascinating as the architecture might be, they couldn't pay _ME_ enough to live in that "target".

You could not have done better! One of my all time favorites of yours!! :))

Miklos: thanks for the heads-up about the typo. I've corrected it.

comment by Bill at 02:39 AM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

A very beautiful photo of a construction site.

comment by Jeff at 03:54 AM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

I too think it's very "snapshoty". I think maybe it's the handrail in the foreground. You were probably either constrained by the balcony of your hotel room or felt that it was necessary to ground the picture, but I think the building on the left does that already.

As for the building itself, I join you in being amazed at the height. I'm currently in Taipei which had the tallest skyscraper in the world until this came along, and that building absolutely towers over the landscape. I can only imagine (and see in your photos) how a building 200m taller would be. I'm looking forward to your 2 other upcoming photos of it.

Looks a lot clearer than when I was there last year. All murky sand in the air in my shots...

Lovely shot, nice treatment!

Oh man... that is awesome.

comment by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at 07:20 AM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

Wauw... great night shot. I love all the diff. colours in the scene

comment by Oli at 10:25 AM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

Although Blackpool has provided you with some really interesting shots, I don't think you can deny that Dubai out-classes it in many ways!

A noticeable change from your usual style, which I think is a good thing. A change is as good as a rest (apparently!)

comment by Benjamim at 10:26 AM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

look like a frame from the blade runner

Wow! Stunning!

comment by silfver at 04:20 PM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

Can I ask you why you choosed (if you did) to have the hand rail in the shot? Is it for the dept or what? :)

And one more thing. Your cookies doesn't seem to be working. I have to write my name and stuff everytime. And I want it to remember me!

comment by djn1 at 04:46 PM (GMT) on 25 April, 2008

Thanks everyone :-)

Great shot. Like the traffic trails and the way they follow the line of the handrail.
