All the shots I've posted this week were from the Blackpool Pride 2008 festival, and all were shot on Blackpool's North Pier. This one, on the other hand, was taken from the North Pier, and as you can see, the beach was a lot quieter than the pier.

Update: following a couple of the comments below I re-evaluated the composition and decided that it would look better if the horizon wasn't placed in the centre of the frame. So, I've gone for a 16x9 crop this time instead of the original 2x1. If you're interested, the original crop is here:

WOW! What a serene and beautiful place ... well captured too! So vast!

I love the tone. Gorgeous.

Beautiful!!!

I am not sure why the image is not opening. Maybe I am because I use Safari on a mac. But thought you might like to know

comment by djn1 at 07:31 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

cy: I also use a Mac, and it's working ok for me in Safari, so I would guess there's some sort of network problem between you and our server.

Absolutely beautiful!

comment by Richard Trim at 08:13 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Really like the potential of this David ... but it sort of seems top heavy to me ... if you get my drift.

comment by patrick at 08:16 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Absolutely beautiful!

This is my favourite of the week... tranquil but moody, definitely a case of less is more :)

comment by Leicca at 09:46 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Nice place. I can smell the calm. Nice picture.

comment by Jim at 09:56 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Just a gorgeous, calming shot. The tones are fantastic.

comment by Tayab at 09:56 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Yeh..its not bad.

In all seriousness, its brilliant. It really does interest me to see what you're posting on a daily basis because as a student, its always good to see top end work to learn from and be inspired by...I may actually look into your tutorials because I'm sure I'd learn alot.

comment by Jennifer at 10:42 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Wonderful - very calming.

comment by jkm at 10:52 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Just lovely! I thought this would have been full on wide angle. Even with a lousy screen it still looks stunning!

comment by Ryan at 11:06 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

One of my favourites in a long time. Great Photo.

comment by Paul at 11:37 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

I really do like this, so simple but so effective. I just wish it wasn't split right down the middle though. I love the placement of the couple in the frame.

comment by Mark at 11:40 PM (GMT) on 22 May, 2008

Stunning image with lovely, subtle tones. I love these really wide 'extreme' compositions of yours; reminiscent of French cinema or the better shot end of Bollywood

comment by Pete at 12:14 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

I agree - a wonderful image. It's hard to believe this is Blackpool!

I also love the detail in the background - you can even see the wind turbines on the hills.

comment by kate at 04:37 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

so pretty, so well balanced. love depth from multiple shades in hills. sharp contrast offered by tiny clouds. textured foreground. the feeling it's a mouth they're walking towards, whether it is or not. :)

Beautiful Photograph David! : )

comment by JoeB at 05:12 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Breathtaking, I like the two figues in the corner they really show the vastness of the land.

comment by Tom K. at 05:41 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Legend Worthy.

comment by Bryan K. at 06:25 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

looks like iceland!!! beautiful... great tonality.

comment by Lunamania at 07:06 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Great tones and I like the sweeping wide angle coupled with the tiny people.

comment by Tony S. at 09:27 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

What a lovely image! Classic and timeless. Could you tell me which of your tutorials show how to achieve the lovely tones in the photograph?

comment by onewayphotoblog / Mark at 09:37 AM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Stunning scene. The two people in the corner really make the shot in my opinion

comment by rhys at 01:15 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Well, for me it just brings back lots of great childhood memories- the beach and the view of the south lakes- so for that reason its a clear winner.

comment by Jay at 02:07 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Outstanding! This shot really shows the scale of our planet in comparison to us. This is one I'd definitely hang on my wall. Amazing work!

comment by Jeremy at 02:22 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

I prefer the "original" - sometimes rules are there to be broken !! As someone else said, this version is more "top heavy"

comment by Steve at 03:58 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Awesome as always! Love the vast space in this picture with the people in left hand corner. Great composition!

Steve

comment by Jeff Ambrose at 06:39 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Wonderful work, I have an obsession with tiny people so I naturally love this. The new composition works much better for me also.

comment by djn1 at 07:22 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Thanks all.

Jeremy: the "top heavy" comment applied to the 2x1 crop, not this one.

comment by Marcie at 09:23 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

Absolutely stunning! If there was a way to express perfection..this would be it.

comment by chiara at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2008

very few shots that i've come across in my lifetime take my breath away. this one was one of them.

comment by Claus at 07:42 PM (GMT) on 24 May, 2008

The solitude is striking in this one!! Beautiful!

comment by Judit at 07:11 AM (GMT) on 25 May, 2008

Perfect shot, nice atmosphere and beautful landscape!!

comment by iced coffee at 11:18 AM (GMT) on 26 May, 2008

So many of your photographs make me think of how small we as humans really are.

comment by Jeremy at 11:24 AM (GMT) on 26 May, 2008

Dave - my mistake about the "top heavy" comment. I still prefer the original :-)

comment by Lightseeker at 09:41 PM (GMT) on 26 May, 2008

Nice one.

comment by 24by36 at 06:18 AM (GMT) on 27 May, 2008

Simply amazing colours. Even though the skies are dark, the image has a very soft, warm tone to it. The updated crop is the stronger of the two, pulling the eye in more and creating a sense of a wide landscape. Well done!
