This is a shot I took of Rhowan some time ago, taken an a wedding we all attended. It was taken quite late in the evening, by which time Rhowan was a bit tired and fed-up - hence her morose expression. As for the photograph though, she really likes it – mostly because she loves her Barbie boots – though Harmony, her little sister, did ask "Why are Rhowan's knees so grubby?".

For a split second I thought I might try and explain the complexities of tone mapping a psuedo-HDR file generated from a single RAW file using Photomatix Pro, but Harmony's only five, so I didn't :-)

If you're interested, there's an uncropped version of the original image here:

Love the photo, except I coulnd't see it on the site.. _h version doesn't seem to be available, and I can only see the photo if I decrease my browser width and refresh.

comment by djn1 at 11:08 AM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Constantinos: I'm not sure what happened there, the file was uploaded to the server but wouldn't load. Anyway, I've now uploaded a new version - which does work.

comment by miklos at 11:55 AM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

The JPG quality is horrible. First time I see it like this on here... what happened?

comment by Rick at 11:59 AM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Agree on the poor JPEG quality. I actually checked all my browser settings to ensure it wasn't on my side.

comment by djn1 at 12:01 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

miklos: for some reason they look reasonably ok on my machine, but I just checked my settings and it seems that 'Save for Web' reset itself to '0' quality - which isn't good. Anyway, I've re-uploaded them all now so it should look a lot better.

comment by miklos at 12:52 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Yessir, much better.

comment by Al at 01:03 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Great HDR conversion David. As always, thanks for showing the "before" and "after" shots...

comment by Andy at 02:42 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

The tone mapping definitely "makes" this photograph... along with her expression.

Nicely done.

comment by Sonny Parlin at 02:52 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Stunning, I can't believe the difference between this and the original.

comment by Jesse Moscoe at 03:18 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

This one might be my fav so far. Amazing imagery. I love everything about this image! Very powerful.

comment by Rob at 04:15 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

I think you made something out of nothing here. The processing is a little heavy generally, but for the title and look to go along with it, is excellent.

comment by Danton at 04:25 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

She looks like she could be on the cover of a grunge band album! Terrific expression, posture, even grubby knees all go together for a "don't-give-a-damn" attitude!

comment by topbrief at 04:27 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Another piece of Chromasia magic. The original is frankly an unremarkable photograph; the sort many of us might inadvertantly take and then delete. With your usual alchemy you've provided an interesting image.

I really am going to have to stop looking on this website as it only makes me jealous of your obvious abilities!

Thanks for the constant inspiration.

Fantastic photograph David. Everything seems to fit and work together. Wonderfully done. : )

comment by cy at 05:11 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

great capture. looks like teenager angst maybe setting in. i love what you have done with the image. the original just does not have the same edge as the tonal b/w. really great tonal values and texture. and to boot, Rowan is simply beautiful. really nice pieece

comment by Jennifer at 07:11 PM (GMT) on 6 June, 2008

Wow! To self : must not give in, will not go over to the dark-side, will not dabble in HDR ;-D

Very nice! Perfect shot of how younguns get when they're tired... or how some teenagers are most of the time :P
I like the processing to, but the subject is the best bit.

Sorry Dave but I still don't think I follow here you're going with this and some other HDR shots you've been putting up lately. I guess it's just not my cup of tea. That being said I've seen you do these HDR images really well, in particular when you started doing them on Chromasia...

comment by jelb at 11:24 PM (GMT) on 10 June, 2008

Bonjour,
Well done effect..and "attitude"..Bravo!

comment by jbm at 03:22 PM (GMT) on 11 June, 2008

nice shot, very simple

comment by djn1 at 08:16 PM (GMT) on 11 June, 2008

Thanks everyone.

Patrick: ok, when I've got a bit of free time I'll take a look.

Jide: the first HDRs I put up were probably a bit more subtle than these, and I guess at the moment I'm seeing how far I can push it. I'll probably return to less in-your-face versions soon.

comment by sAD at 03:40 PM (GMT) on 14 June, 2008

wow .... it´s a great work!

comment by Stephen Phillips at 11:08 PM (GMT) on 6 September, 2008

Geez - this is powerful - the scuffed knees and 'Barbie' boots of the little girl meet the make-up and petulance of the emerging woman-to-be. Innocence and innocence lost - all right here. Beautiful, sad, celebratory, brilliant.

comment by Allan Aguirre at 09:51 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2008

I have to agree with Stephen Phillips... very "Pretty Baby". Excellent post work, cropping, etc.
