My apologies for not posting for the last few days but I've been working on my latest tutorial – Photoshop for Night Photography. It's still not finished, but the end is definitely in sight and it will be published at some point tomorrow.

Anyway, as it's almost finished, and I've been neglecting the kids for the last few days, we decided to head out to the Forest of Bowland this afternoon. It was cold, and damp, but we did have a good time, and I did get this shot. In terms of the post-production: there's some added blur, I've done some work on altering the colour palette, and I've lightened some of the darker areas of the image.

If you're interested, the somewhat less interesting original is here:

And I know I say this quite often, but as this is a bit of a departure from my usual style (or styles) I would definitely be interested to hear what you think of it.

brilliant shot!

on the topic of tutorials - im a uni student from where you used to teach, and was wondering if you have any plans to do a tutorial on Interior photography, but using only cameras rather than the whole shabang with relfectors and what not which is more commonly seen...?

Beautiful, makes me think of fairies or something mysterious and airy like that XP I actually also kind of like the original, it's not bad ^^;

wowowowowow! so beautiful!

comment by Craig Morton at 10:40 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2008

I like the treatment, the leaves could almost be gold and the branches look like webs in the morning dew/frost. Different!

comment by Mark at 11:03 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2008

Beautiful that, Dave.

comment by Chris at 11:18 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2008

Dave, I like the mystical transformation that you have done. Departing from the usual styles or comfort zone is always a good thing. You give your viewers different ideas. I would enjoy seeing the PSD with how you teated the colors. I normally take a lot of pictures of trees. Winter coming, a lot of trees are becoming bare and I have been thinking about different approaches that I could take. You definitely have shown what could be done. Nice.

Absolutely beautiful and such subtlety of tone - quite stunning.

I only discovered the existence of the magical Forest of Bowland last year, possibly one of this country's best-kept secrets. Thank goodness for 'Right to Roam'!

I think it's superb - it evokes a mood of fantasy or dreamlike states, particularly the colouring and the 'glow' the blur creates. Very interesting to look at.

comment by Mark at 01:08 AM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

Just beautiful. There's a really delicate (mystical, as others have said) quality to this image that's really brought out by the contrasting colours. It's also a nice departure from your usual 'harder' subject matter.

comment by Micha at 01:38 AM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

so soft, so delicate, so dream like. Beautiful as a painting and superb as a pic. Well done.

comment by Dave Carrington at 02:30 AM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

Quite a departure for you, Dave, but an interesting one. The blown-out bits really add something to this: mystical & lovely!

wow!

A brilliant work! The softness and colors bring a winter mood. I like it!

comment by cy at 09:42 AM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

absolutely love this one. just enough color to really pop and just surreal enough to feel like a memory or a dream you know you once had but can't exactly remember the details. it is so delicate compared to your other works. looks like you are expanding.

comment by mark at 01:56 PM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

amazing shot - the softness is almost ghostly, mystical. who would have thought an image with so much texture could look so soft

comment by Giovanni at 02:14 PM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

Wow, brillant composition! Love the delicate and soft tones and the dreamlike mood! Very well done!

comment by Carlos Garcia at 05:35 PM (GMT) on 31 October, 2008

Stunning image.. the leaves are on fire with light... from some forest in Middle Earth?

A change is as good as a rest :) Great image

comment by gavin hart at 06:06 AM (GMT) on 2 November, 2008

This is really pleasant. The processing you did was totally worthwhile. The splash of color on the leaves, not overdone, amidst the gentle, pastel pattern of branches gives the work a focus. You have taken a bland, raw photo and created an artwork. Regardless of whether or not it is a departure from the usual, in its own right it's a fine image.

comment by Jem at 11:12 AM (GMT) on 2 November, 2008

Like I said before, lovely shot ;)
Just wanted to say thanks too - after following your advice I managed to get shot of the day on pixyblog today ;P <3

First time I comment here, even though I've been visiting this blog for a long time now. This is a stunning shot, it made me pause and explore the image. Fantastic colours, nice chaos, beautiful work.

I love this. It's amazing and poetic. The soft white that reminds one of frost is like winter surrounding fall. The photo is like something out of a dream, or a fairy tale. Beautiful! So good!
