This may well be my favourite shot from my trip to Dubai. It's the Burj Dubai, shot from Souk Al Bahar just after sunset. If you're interested, there's a slightly bigger version here:

I'll be posting more shots from my trip over the coming weeks but, in the meanwhile, let me know what you think of this one.

Update: as a couple of people have asked, here's a link to the original image:

Update #2: If you're interested, our Creative Workflow #2 tutorial is based around this image. Further info here:

Stunning image and well timed too!

Yup, having watched several documentaries and seen other shots of this monster as it grows, I have often wondered if there would be a perfect vantage point. It looks like you may have found it. From other angles it appears nestled amongst smaller constructions from every angle, and I didn't think there would be an angle like this with the water in the foreground. The tonality is spot on as well!... and are they clouds?...

comment by Mirko Herzner at 08:50 AM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

One word: Perfect. Some more words: Beautiful toning and simplicity. This is amazing!

comment by Adam at 10:02 AM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Christ...that's awesome. Those rain clouds came in useful then!
Obviously I totally support the name of this image too, as my batman t-shirt proves.

love the tones and the white of the water really does stand out. Great image

comment by Tayab at 10:18 AM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

BRILLIANT.

Could you upload the original of this so I could see how much work has been done on it?

I think I'll have to sign up to your tutorials

amazing capture!!!

comment by RD at 01:11 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Wow! These kinds of buildings just don't seem real. More like something out of a rather dark and foreboding future. Is this kind (size) of architecture sustainable in Dubai? It's stunning, but the cost to human life and dignity of putting these up makes me wonder how much awe is appropriate. Still, it's an amazing image--the politics of this aside.

comment by Carlos Garcia at 01:33 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

This isn't your daddy's run of the mill sky scraper! Fascinating connection to the tones of the sky, clouds and structures. The building is proud and it is interesting, from the perspective of a New Yorker, to see this tower rise in the absence of a skyline.

this is amazing! i love everything about it...the tone, the composition. beautiful job!

comment by Dan Kaufman at 03:13 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Like I commented on the last shot (time to go) DJN is a Master at Black and White conversion/toning. For me it is the fountain water that puts the wow into this one, it grabs your eye and carries you right up the tower.

Absolutely stunning! That building amazing - a tribute to architects and engineers.

comment by Chris at 07:06 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Hi Dave, Great image, I enjoy the sky behind this dark tower. It adds that dark element to the dark city of Gotham. Title definitely fits the image. I think I do see Batman swinging from the left-hand side of the building. :)

comment by Krims@nline.be at 07:22 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Utterly awesome ... congrats David

comment by Dave at 07:38 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Great image with a fantastic mood. Really has a Gotham City feel to it, contrasted by the bright fountains in the foreground. I do love this time of year, all you guys that go there are starting to pump out some great images from the event. Hope to see more.
Regards,

Dave

Extraordinarily well done David. I thoroughly enjoyed admiring your photograph.

comment by mooch at 09:53 PM (GMT) on 10 April, 2009

Blimey, that is a very tall building underlined by the great juxtaposition of those cranes which I know loom over any landscape. To be dwarfed by the structure really gives context as to height. Quite a brooding shot which befits the subject. I wouldn't be able to feel anything other than vulnerable in such a tall building...

This photo feels like a breath of fresh air :).

This image is worthy of inclusion in any gallery I've ever visited. I'm sure that in years to come this will still stand out as one of those 'special' shots.
