Here's how the conversation went with this one:

Harmony: "it makes me look like a geeky glasses girl!"

Me: "do you want me to post it on the blog then?"

Harmony: "yes, I do!"

Me: "do you think people will like it?"

Harmony: "yes."

So there you have it :-)

Wow. Not sure whether be scared and run away or be hypmotized ?
Nice High-key effect again. And the more I look the more the eyes and goggles draw you in .

Wow! Tell her she was right. I like it a lot. It's superb. And totally cute. Definately a favourate of your recent shots. :)

comment by Jem at 12:29 PM (GMT) on 10 July, 2009

This works well as a high key shot - but I think it would also have worked wonderfully well with a dark background and a grungy effect on top. Maybe some Apocolypse Now music in the background ;) Nice shot Dave!

Your daughter was definitely right. It's something with this picture. These eyes just draw you in. Great high-key.

Gorgeously gregarious, geeky glasses girl surely! I can't help thinking about Torchwood for some reason! Fab image.

comment by Dan Kaufman at 03:00 PM (GMT) on 10 July, 2009

superb all the way around !!! I particularly like the expanded 16x9 composition, and the combo high key with desaturation is (again) the masterful Nightingale signature touch. But that said, Harmony wins the "tell it like it is" prize !!!

Well done Harmony!! Love it and thank you for letting your father post it for us to enjoy!! :)

Oh my goodness! I Love this one! Harmony, you were so right! I absolutely love it! Great desicion on the recomposition. Thanks again for the original. Absolutely gorgeous high key look.

comment by Jaol at 10:15 PM (GMT) on 10 July, 2009

I live it very much, above all her eyes, the composition and the "harmony" of colours (between her lips and the hat). All the adjetives have been used already, so to me this portrait is "harmony".

comment by Rick at 12:23 AM (GMT) on 11 July, 2009

I really like the high key low saturation effect used in the photograph of Harmony. Is that technique covered in your PS tutorials?

comment by scott anderson at 12:46 AM (GMT) on 11 July, 2009

David...this image is magnificent in so many ways! I love the high key stylings combined with the expressiveness of your daughter. Bravo!

comment by Sarah at 02:39 AM (GMT) on 11 July, 2009

Once again I must apologise I am awful at commenting (I comment here about twice a year) yet I do visit your blog daily without fail. I just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE this image. You know what? This is exactly what Venture Photography Studios are aiming to create but aren't capable of, this kind of image just goes to show that bright-high contrast images (much like Venture Studios style) can be really nice, but only when they are done by a true professional with a unique touch - like your work. Well done.

comment by Rodolphe at 10:57 AM (GMT) on 11 July, 2009

Hi Dave,
Why did you use the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM? Sorry for that question but I am intrigued :)
The PP work done around the goggles is exquisite. Really wonderful!
Cheers

Buenísima.
It is great she let you post it.

comment by Marco at 12:29 PM (GMT) on 11 July, 2009

It seems to me that Harmony makes geekey glasses the new hot fashion thing. Wonderful picture!

comment by Enric at 12:33 PM (GMT) on 11 July, 2009

Nice high key, I absolulty like the ¿glasses?, nice color job.

I want to know too, why 100mm macro?

Thanks

Beautiful photograph David.

comment by Dave at 06:35 AM (GMT) on 12 July, 2009

If this picture does not make you smile, I am not sure what will. Just plain easy to like, and very creative........I just love this picture. So much personality. Well done Dave.

Regards,

Dave

As always there's no challenge between you and everyone else taking pictures of children. It's because you're the father maybe, but the content beyond the image itself it's always a great story. Thanks as always for sharing :)

original shot!! i like this composition!! :))

comment by Buonaluce at 10:56 PM (GMT) on 12 July, 2009

It's too easy to praise your great portraits, so I'll play the devil's advocate here: 2x1? Why? Felt the need to make it more dynamic?
Just nitpicking, of course. You've really mastered this kind of shots :)

comment by rhys at 08:28 AM (GMT) on 13 July, 2009

I do like this a lot. Quirky and full of character. Brilliant.

comment by Claus Petersen at 04:05 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2009

She really looks ready for the pool and some sunshine! :-)

comment by djn1 at 04:43 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2009

Thanks everyone, from both me and Harmony :)

Rick: it's not covered as a discrete topic, but all the tools and techniques can be found within my existing tutorials.

Sarah: good to hear from you, and don't worry about the infrequent comments :)

Rodolphe and Enric: no other reason than because it was on my camera at the time. That said, it is a very sharp lens, and is a good focal length for portraits (i.e. it's quite flattering to the subject).

Buonaluce: feel free to nitpick :) I'm not sure I can answer your question though other than to say that I thought it worked better that way.

comment by Matt at 11:01 PM (GMT) on 24 July, 2009

Is it me or does this remind me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

comment by thomas mueller at 11:54 AM (GMT) on 26 July, 2009

oh that's really nice. i like her geek-expression and the high-key processing. looks like a little model. ;)

comment by Chris at 12:59 PM (GMT) on 31 July, 2009

I'm just catching up having not visited for a little while and this pops up!
WOW! This is a fantastic photo! The expression, the googles, the colouring and the crop all make this just right!
She was right to let you post it!

I'll visit more often I promise - and having just upgraded to lifetime membership, i'll have to ;-)
