While this image (and the next one I'll post) are not quite as striking as my last one, I am pleased with them, not least because both do a good job of demonstrating the capabilities of the Ricoh GR Digital III – my new compact camera. In this instance, I was testing the macro mode, and while the Ricoh can focus a lot closer than this (i.e. 1cm from the end of the lens), I was pleased with how much detail it recorded in the old rusty ring.

Impressive amount of detail you've pulled out of the image...
I agree that it's not as striking as the shoe, although since this comment box is now covering the boat in the background I've noticed that's possibly more a compositional thing rather than the subject itself...
Classic Chromasia.

Garry: I think you may be right, but for some reason I didn't consider a square crop with this one - probably because I was also thinking about the DoF and the background detail.

Really an impressive presentation for your new camera's abbilities. I like how you play with the maritime setting in your composition.

Both very nice - but I prefer this one. I think it must be the colours, as the sea is certainly more dramatic in the previous shot!

You know what? I think I prefer this one. Love the hight detail and rusty tones. Sense of scale is lost somehow, the ring could be 3" or 3', the worn groove gives a sense of age. Top banana :)

This shot is a lot more relaxed than the shoe shot. It carries less tension, but the tones are really nice.

I'm impressed with the detail capture as well...but I'm going to jump on the "cropping band wagon" as well. Interestingly, my first thought, my first "blink" of a thought, before I read any comments was that the boat on the horizon didn't belong--that it distracted from the story. And then to read Garry's comment with Dave's follow up confirmed my gut feeling, that I'd like this one better in a 1x1 crop without the boat.

Hi Dave, I really like both images. However, I have the tendency to lean towards this one more. Favoring this one more is due primarily to subject content. I find the rusty ring and rust colored sand more intriguing than the shoe. At first I thought the boat might be a distracting element but I am convinced it works. Seeing the ring, then the angled intersecting waves, and then the boat of somekind, it could potentially tell a story of time and attachment/release. Well done.

Dave,
You know my love for all things having to do with the shore/beach/ocean...
I like this image... one ring to rule them all...

One day thinking about this shot. What I see is simplicity, a great post-processing , and a great photographer behind it. D

Amazing details from a compact camera.
I like this one better than the shoe. The texture of the ring, the colour tones. Very nice processing.
