As I mentioned when I posted my previous entry I shot a wedding in Venice at the weekend with Tom Wicky. Tom shot the bride getting ready in the morning then we both shot the ceremony (at Venice Town Hall). Once the ceremony had finished Tom and I took a 45 minute walk through Venice with the bride and groom: Tom shot the 'formal' portraits while I concentrated on recording the less formal aspects of our stroll. I haven't had a chance to work through all of them yet, but did like this one.

You captured a wonderful candid moment! I love the feel and tonality in this image too; you are a master of the curves adjustment.

Very cool and natural looking shot!

comment by Garry at 07:18 AM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

Great natural image... one of those that could never happen in Britain... imagine what the health and safety brigade would say!

comment by djn1 at 07:29 AM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

Ryan and Catalin: thanks.

Garry: the more time I spend in the rest of Europe the more I realise that Britain has developed a rather OTT health and safety policy - to the point where the Government seems to think that everyone must be a complete and utter moron ;-)

comment by Mark at 07:29 AM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

That's a classic image. Lovely

This is ...awesome, David. Awesome. By the way, she's identical to Christina Yang of Grey's Anatomy ;)

comment by Tony at 08:08 AM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

Now thats just odd. lol.

Looks like it should be a magazine advert. A bit more leg maybe next time David please.

What a great moment to capture - truly "the decisive moment"

comment by Barbro at 09:20 AM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

This is just splendid! At weddings, the not so formal pictures are the most fun to make.

Amazing shot Dave and it completely works. I just can't imagine how you asked for this. "So I'm going to need to bride to bend down and drink from that fountain. Groom, can you help?"

comment by Andy at 11:05 AM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

Love this. Amazingly classic.

3 seconds before...

"Look, I have a glass in my pocket and... oh... okay..."

Great capture Dave! Love the moment and the beautiful b&w tones.

EXCELLENT!!!

comment by Jason at 12:58 PM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

This is such a fantastic shot for the candid moment captured and the tones / contrast. I love the way the people pop off the screen to stand out from the floor and background.

Ah - this is wonderful Dave! What a moment! Fantastic capture :)

comment by Adam at 06:45 PM (GMT) on 7 October, 2009

A great shot indeed. In Rome the street fountains have a small hole in the top of the spigot. To use as a drinking fountain you cover the primary outlet and the water comes out the top hole. Is that not the case in Venice?

This brings an immediate smile to my face--besides being a well composed AND most excellently processed B/W (I swear you're giving Ansel competition with your zone work.)

comment by CJ @ID7 at 07:22 AM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

I love the pose you managed to capture in the bride, the moment is unusual I don't think I know of any other bride that would have posed for that one.... its a great image,we must have a catch up soon buddy.... CJ

I like this very original weddingphoto, funny that he got a such serious face in this humoristic scene.

comment by alberto at 11:47 AM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

:) ...typical image of tourists here in Venice... but so original with newlyweds as object!

comment by Ricard at 12:01 PM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

Great shot! Nice!
Good decision choosing b&w for this photo.

comment by djn1 at 02:15 PM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

Thanks everyone :)

Kevin and CJ: lol, this wasn't posed :)

Adam: the fountains may be the same in Venice, I'm not sure.

comment by Samar at 06:40 PM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

I like the way the subjects are seperated from the background. Wonderful. B&W works great for this shot!

comment by Dave Carrington at 11:18 PM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

Take your point about UKGOV, Dave: unfortunately, there's no credible alternatve...

I don't know why, but this reminds me of a still from an old Charlie Chaplin film: an old-fashioned tenderness & refreshing humanity shines through this shot!? Lovely stuff! :-)

comment by Dan McNab at 11:55 PM (GMT) on 8 October, 2009

Beautiful work Dave, a fun moment captured in a one of a kind shot!

comment by iheartfilm at 07:41 PM (GMT) on 12 October, 2009

There's something odd about this that makes it wonderful.

comment by njr at 03:49 PM (GMT) on 15 October, 2009

I just submitted this as an alternative (guerilla?) nomination for Photo of the Year at http://vote.photoblogawards.com/photoblog.php?name=venezia-2. If you love this photo as much as I do, you might want to stop by and vote for it.

Or, of course, you could always vote for the Official Chromasia nomination (http://vote.photoblogawards.com/photoblog.php?name=bsc---workington) :-)

I think this is an intriguing and an intimate image. Great work.

Having been to a few places in Italy (well at least Campania), I notice the Italians do like their drinking fountains, as they are quite common. You don't see that in Britain. This is quite a comical pose and isn't contemporary wedding photography great?!
