When I posted venezia #3 I mentioned that I trusted to luck with the exposure - mostly because I didn't have time to do anything else. With this shot though I decided to deliberately go for a more high-key image, by overexposing by +1 EV, and while I think I prefer the slightly moodier look of venezia #3, I also like this one too. Technically, and aesthetically, I think it's a bit weaker, but symbolically I think it's more interesting, i.e. they're walking towards a bright or unknown future.

I'd be interested to hear how you think the two compare, and which you prefer.

On a related matter, the second shot I posted in this series – venezia #2 – has been nominated for the Photo of the Year category of the 2009 Photoblog Awards. If you would like to vote for that image you can do so here:

My own submission for that category was one of my favourite HDR shots from this year – BSC - Workington. If you'd like to vote for that one, the relevant page is here:

Yes, your description is the way I felt about this IE the start of something new, a beginning of a journey. It's a beautiful image and the +1 worked perfectly for it.

I would also draw attention to Chromasia's recent tutorial on post-processing high-key and low-key portraits. I learned a lot from that one and I can see (feel) a lot of that methodology applied here.

Dave,

I prefer #3... I love the contrasts and the shadows... it just gets my attention more than #7. Congrats on the nomination... venezia #2 AND the beautiful rails are both favorites.

Hi David,

Love your pictures.
Q: Do you have any plan of releasing video tut's anytime soon?
This would be much appreciated rather than HTML ones.

cheers
Lloyd

WOW! I need to look at the tutorial on this. It is a close call between this shot and the fountain one for me. Your description of the unknown future is exactly what my first impression was from viewing this shot. I can't stop staring at this one though. Fantastic series of shots...

I think I prefer this one over #3, maybe it's de dimensions/composition and the pure white at the end as you mention. Nice shot Dave.

I think what you accomplished with both pictures is incredible. From the married couple's perspective I would have picked this over #3 and bought it as a huge wall print because, like you said, its more symbolic, personal yet superb. #3 however is very classy and believe its application would be meant for a myriad of image purposes?

I really think the high key effect works well with this image. I also like the contrast of the sharpness of the subject, with the softness all around. Striking as usual. On a side note, I just blogged my 100th image. Feel free to give a look if you're so inclined. Cheers ;)

Beautiful shot of the bride and groom, the over exposure worked perfectly. Great place to shoot a wedding.

Really enjoying your work.
