We went to a party at our village hall last night, to celebrate Trifon Zarezan, or the "Day of the Vine-Grower". Most of the village seemed to be there, and although our Bulgarian is still quite rudimentary, we did manage to have a few conversations with our fellow villagers.

Among the guests was this young lad and, while it's not one of the best portraits I've ever posted, I defy you to tell me that it didn't make you smile :)

It did make me smile for sure. And that's just perfect for this Sunday afternoon. Enjoy your time and keep sharing those "eastern experiences"...

So David, which one do you prefer: St Valentine or Trifon zarezan? :-)

comment by Dan Kaufman at 03:21 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2010

He has so much character in his face!!! You know how it's fun to look at an old person and imagine them as a kid? It's fun to imagine this guy as a senior citizen. What a smile!!!
(and the bokeh'd background is excellent. Just enough to let you know what's there.)

Absolutely darling boy! Love his smile, yes, he made me smile big.

nick: I think that both have their merits, but Trifon Zarezan was interesting, not least because it's based on something that would have little or no meaning in UK.

Dan: I agree, and suspect that he will have a very interesting face when older :)

That's an adorable kid and a great shot!

Funny little guy! I like the burnt background and his intense black hair contrasting.... Great one!

You are so right. This is my happy image as every time I look at it, it makes me smile. Really excellent portrait. I love how you killed the background just enough for it not to be a distraction, but its still there to tell the story. I look forward to taking your Landscape course a week today :)
