Just for once I don’t really have a lot to say about today’s image other than that I like it, and it was one of those shots that as soon as you look in the viewfinder (or LCD display in this case) you know i) that it’s going to work (by which I mean it works for me), and ii) exactly how you want it to look when it’s finished – and that doesn’t happen all that often, at least not for me. That said, I don’t think this is a “challenging” image (see yesterday’s comments) – by any stretch of the imagination – but I am pleased with the way it turned out ;-)

So, given that I don’t have anything else to say about this shot, I thought I’d point you at a few of photoblogs I’ve been looking at recently that you might not have come across.

The first is peppered, a UK based photoblog. What I like about this blog, other than the pictures, is the rather unique navigational system – if you follow the link you’ll see what I mean. The second is joe’s nyc. What I love about this site is the way in which it seems to capture something that I, as someone from England, immediately recognise as being North American. I’ve only visited the States a couple of times, so am not all that familiar with it, but Joe’s site really does seem to capture it’s flavour (or what I imagine that flavour to be). And the third site, and most unusual of these three, is Glipto29 photo. I wont describe it, as I think it’s worth seeing prior to any explanation (if that makes sense).

Simple and beautiful!

I just love it when things work out like that.

I really dig this shot. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is that makes this shot work for me though. I think it might be the rich contrast between the red wall and the pipe.

Perhaps there's some sort of subconcious christian imagery going on here? Those pipes do somewhat resemble a crucifix... Or maybe its just some underlying approval we all have for symmetry. With faces it generally means good genes, but I guess it also could also carry over to other things. ;)

Actually the pipes remind me a little bit of bull's horns. But for me the rich saturation and near symetry make this shot the dope shizzy.

love the 'feel' of this image

You always get a perfect light.

Saturated colour, hard industrial textures - excellent. I wonder if a different crop, losing the return angle in the top left would enhance the symmetry more? Tricky...

I absolutely LOVE this photo!!! The red coupled with the dark shadows screams mystery, to me. It evokes a real dark emotion (in a good way). Brilliant!

Amazing, Buddy...Lovely photo, I envy your continuous gorgeous posting, well done.

I like the colours with the saturated feel though I'm not 100 percent sure on the composition. I find the left hand side of the image a little distracting. I would have been inclined to crop the image tighter on to the three windows on the right and may be lose the gravel as well. I think this would lead to a stronger composition concentrating on the elements that work very well in the image. That being said it is still a very strong image worthy of the interest it has attracted.

Very strong shot. It's such a great colour. is it painted that colour, or was the colour from the light? Either way, I like it a lot.

This is so rich, really stunning!

gorgeous image rich in textures and colour. love all the lines and the four windows (?) staring right at you. this is another one of my favourites of yours..

this might sound strange, but it's always reassuring when i find [photo]bloggers who are from england.

The red-orange color is almost otherworldly, the light is beautiful, the shadows feel deliciously gritty. I also like the varying light on the other side of the windows. Great shot, Dave.

Incidentally, does anyone know what "dope shizzy" means? :)

What I love about this photo is the fact that the horrible glare on that second window isn't horrible at all -- it actually adds something wonderful.

Like this one a lot!

Love the glare in that window.

Love the deep, rich colours.

Sure it won't change my life (hehe) but it's really very pleasing to the eyes. Well SEEN and captured!

The thing I like about photography, and the visual arts in general, is that they can transcend the words we use to describe them; i.e. an image can not only say more than a thousand words, it can also say something that can't be expressed in words. And I wouldn't claim that this was such an image, but there is something about it that resists an easy description. In other words, I really like it, but I don't know why - or, more accurately, I can't say why. Bad images are much easier to talk about - the lighting's wrong, this or that element is distracting, it's out of focus - but what makes a shot work is often much harder to pin down. Anyway, I'm glad you all liked it.

Simon and Deceptive: I did try cropping this image (this version isn't cropped), but they didn't work anywhere near as well.

d: I know what you mean. If you check out photoblogs.org you'll see that there are 502 sites who have listed their location as the United States, but only 72 from the UK. So there aren't all that many of us about ;-)

Judith: I emailed Houser about the "dope shizzy" expression, and apparently it translates to "ooh, that's rather nice", if you live in the UK, or "good shit" if you live in the US ;-)

Great photo! I love it.

At first glance, what's really noticeable is the sharp contrast and saturated orange colour, which is great.
Then I kind of noticed the symetry with the pipe and the windows which bring some interesting pattern in there, I also love playing with pattern.
But the thing that interests me the most and which makes me really love the shot is actually the assymetry brought by the difference of colours between the left and right windows, especially with the second window on the left.
I think it really makes this shot have a life of its own!

Anyway, I was wondering about the conditions you had for this shot? Given the f2.5 aperture, the 1/50 sec exposition and 100ISO film, it must have been pretty dark out there to not over-expose the photo... and the date says it was 2pm when you shot it .... perhaps I'm missing something ...

Thanks for this wonderfull site anyway!
