I don’t have too much to say about this shot, but I do have a request today.
I’ve been thinking about the way this blog is organised, and wondered how people use the various pages (particularly the archives) to view these images. I have my server logs, but they don’t really tell me who looks at what, they just give me the total figures for any particular page. So, when you visit Chromasia, which pages do you look at? I have my main archive page, which gives access to the monthly and category archives, and there’s the thumbnails page. Which of these do you regularly use?
Also, I’ve been wondering whether I should include thumbnails of recent images on my main page. This is a fairly standard thing to do (see groundglass for an example) but I’ve resisted it because I prefer to focus on the main image. So, would anyone prefer that I did and/or think it would add something to the site? A compromise would be to have dual index and individual entry archive pages, one without the clutter (as now) and one with (incorporating thumbnails, and maybe the comments and the image description - rather than have them appear as a pop-up). Anyway, let me know what you think. I don’t have time for a major redesign at the moment, but I am pondering some changes at some point.

Great image. Nice colors/saturation, and depth of field.
As for the design; I like it. I don't like how the archives have descriptions on them... I feel they should just be thumbnails. But overall, everything is solid.

This is a cool shot!
Hmm...the design...I like it the way it is and I do think thumbnails would be disruptive.
Would u get rid of the other thumbnails if you did this? I like the thumbnail archives. I want to eventually implement it on my site when I learn how.
About every other day I look at the mainpage. I love the simplicity of your mainpage ánd the fact that I just click on the photo and see the previous one. Very simple but very effective.
I have to admit I just recently discovered the thumbnails and the archive-pages. I hope you don't want to get rid of them, because I really plan to browse them very soon (still waiting for lots of spare time!).
Endconclusion: I like the simplicity of your site, but at the same time everything is there if you want more information or look for older pfoto's. For me this is a perfect site!

i like the design as is.
i like that you have to click the pop-up to get more info about the image - sometimes, on other sites, i find myself influenced by the words before the image has even loaded.
as for thumbnails on the main page - i think they would be a distraction, and unnecessary for me, as i come here pretty much every day.
i haven't really looked at the archives since i originally discovered the site, but the thumbnails are very helpful to have there.
the only redesign suggestion i have is that you edit the design for ie5 - i'm not sure if you're aware of it, but in ie5 the page width seems to be at about 1000px and there's a whole lot of horizontal scrolling to do. don't know how many people still use ie5, but it might be enough to warrant an update.
other than that, my request would be for no changes!

In this photo I feel that I'm spying on people. It's a very good perspective.
Re the design: I like it as it is. I like pages with thumbnails, but like some have mentioned, putting thumbnails on the main page may be disruptive. I usually click "previous" until I see a photo I've viewed before. Works very well.

I wouldn't change the main page. I find those thumbnails distract from the actual image. About the archives: I don't use them much, as I stop by nearly every day. But I really like the thumbnail archive. It is the perfect "way-back-machine".
I usually get to see your site daily but when not, I just click through each ndividual shot...I have never even bee to your Archives page...yet!
comment by Ted at 12:15 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2004
I don't visit everyday, so I will sometimes go to the archive interface to get caught up because it offers the larger images.
Only thing I would suggest is make the main image(s) clickable to the bigger image for all us squinty eyed folk.
I would leave the comments interface the way it is. Some folks like comments, some don't.
Other than that, keep up the good work - I like your photos very much, and have borrowed a couple or so for wallpaper.

Any way you could include the full picture in the RSS feed, like Daily Dose of Imagery? Most of the time, I just view the pictures in the feed and getting the thumbnail is a pity.
Thanks,
Nick

I really like the way the site looks now. The reality is that I visit every day, so I don't use the archive much.
In any case, I like the way the frontpage looks, with no other images. Especially if you update the site almost every day, I think there's no need for thumbnails there. But that's my opinion.
I think that your site design is one of the most original that's out there. I would have never thought to include the information on the comments template.
If you're willing to spend some money (and since the pound to dollar exchange rate is pretty good) I'd pick up a copy of Weblog Expert - it provides logs that shows visitor paths through the site. I'm currently using that data for a redesign that I'm in the middle of right now.
First, the pic. I like this picture, simply because it's so simple. The chrome has some nice indistinct reflections in it, and the grass has some nice demensionality (is that a word?) to it. It's so green! Can you photoshop my lawn to look like that? :) It reminds me of a shot of my friend that he submitted to Photo Friday last week, of his daughter's leg and her tricycle, not because they look alike, but content is close. I like how the background is blurred but the colors are still distinct, it matches with the chrome blur in the forground.
Ok, the site design. I used to do this for a living, and have to say that the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method is always one that people should strive for. One of the things I like about the site is its simplicity. The main page focus on the picture of the day is nice about a photoblog, as it should be, and the small links to navigate above the picture do not take away the enjoyment of the picture. What I'm getting to is, this is a great design, try to stay away from any more clutter on the main page, such as the thumbnails, and keep those for your archive. After all, that's what an archive is, and there's a great link to it above, if people have the inclination. I like the way that clicking on the current photo gets you back to the previous, but for those that don't know that, you have a link above. Again, great site, but I understand the urge to change things. When you do, keep things simple, and keep the focus on the photo at hand. Thanks for the art and entertainment, I hope to continue making this one of my stops everyday!

I personally just use the rss feed and come visit the main page when I see an image that intrigues me. So I would prefer that the main page stay uncluttered to retain the impact and focus it currently has. I might also enjoy large images in the feed itself as another commenter suggested.
That said, I'd encourage you to do whatever suits you best. It's your site and your creativity is what makes it worth visiting, really.

Of all the photoblogs I came across recently, your's has the best structure. I use bloglines.com to read your RSS feed and I particularly love that you have included thumbnails in the feed. I read the description first (looking at the thumbnail at the same time), then I open the image in a separate browser window and enjoy the detail, then I read the comments and see what other people have to say about the picture.

great perspective ... great colour.
Your site design is simple, wonderful and I enjoy it so much. I like the image on the main page and the ease of clicking to previous, the clean lines create a nice focus on your photography. I enjoy the thumbnail page as well as the archives and the addition of the top 10. I also enjoy reading the details in the comments.
I have been attempting to figure out how to redesign my site and your site quite frankly is the inspiration. I think its perfection and a highlights your photography in a wonderful way.
Your site is truly inspirational, when I visit (this tends to be almost every day) I use my favorite links to your index2.php page mainly because I like to see what you have to say before I look at the image. Then I'll use your "latest" link at the top of the page to look at the picture in more detail. I've only really found your site last month and I looked through the thumbnails for interest now I only return there occasionally but would hate it if you removed them since I use them mainly for ideas and inspiration. Hope this helps.
Well, i will say that for the longest time, i didnt even know to look at your archives to see your most recent...Now that I know about it, i love how the site is layed out...i prefer it over the other sites that do the same thing...this way when i come to your site, i see one pic and one pic only...it makes it stand out that much more....and then when i want to browse around, i know to go look under archives....
the only thing i'd say that might be easier for most people is to add a more descriptive link to your main page showing the most recent or something like that.
The most beautiful wheel Ive ever seen. I use your main index.. and previous.. personally I like it without the thumbnails. If I want to look thru them you do have a link but like you I think the main focus on the main page should be the newest picture.. Just my opinion.
i don't like how the archives has the info either, i think archives is just a quick reference page to see past photos. so if someone really wants to know about the pic they'd click on it to find out more info.
I love this bike picture the green looks so cheery

I think that, in addition to the photos themselves, one of the main reasons your site has been so successful is that your design is one of the best - if not THE best - photolog designs.
Having just a single photo on the each main entry page seesm to be what people like best - it concentrates attention where it matters. Having all the other technical info and commentary appear in a pop-up works nicely.
I've browsed all your site's features and the way you organise your archives is excellent. The thumbs section is a great way of displaying all your material in an impactful way.
So I wouldn't change anything. If it ain't broke...

Thanks everyone, and I guess the short answer to your various points is that I'm not going to change anything ... as Simon concluded "if it ain't broke ..." :-)
As for your more specific points:
Ted: I can't make the images/medium sized thumbs clickable on the archive pages because of the way I coded the templates. That image and the text are both incorporated into the Extended Entry section of the template. On reflection, this was a poor idea, but to fix it would mean manually editing all 150+ entries.
Nick: I have thought about including the full size entry into the news feed but, and this is probably just a question of vanity on my part, I don't like presenting them that way. I spent quite a bit of time sorting out the layout of the main page (colours, css border etc) and to just dump the images through a news feed doesn't present them at their best.
Rod: thanks for the pointer to Weblog Expert - I may well have a look at it.
Brenda: one think I thought I might do is make the site 'skinnable'; i.e. offer a couple of colour variants - maybe a darker one and a white scheme, but I'm not in any hurry to implement it.
So thanks again - it's good to hear that most of you think the site's ok.

Very nice shot. I think the tight crop as well as the deep saturation and shallow DOF really make this shot. Well done.
d -- my 12 cents on the subject is this: the site isn't just "ok" -- it's awesome. the level of detail you take for each image (descriptions, text, and processing) are an inspiration. but I well know the urge to change things around -- the skinning may very well give you that relief, check out these folks: http://www.csszengarden.com/
Leave it alone. You know I love that feed -- please don't make your feed thumbnails bigger--they fit quite comfortably and are just appealing enough for me to click through as is, and they load quickly.
The only thing I have a beef with is reading through the comments on the popup (I read the info on the feed), the white on grey is a little hard to read unless I zoom the text once or twice.
