This is one of those shots that almost worked, but didn't quite make it. There's not quite enough DoF, the image would have been better in colour if it hadn't been for the distracting detail down the left side of the image (which is way less noticeable in b&w), and the composition just doesn't quite work. But I'm running a bit short of decent stuff to put up at the moment and I do quite like some aspects of this shot.

And over the next few weeks things are likely to get worse before they get better: I'm away for most of next week (but hope to take some shots before I go to put up while I'm away), and we're probably moving house two weeks today (which is a bit sooner than I expected) - but we're not packed, haven't booked a removal van, have stuff in storage but have lost the key, and are generally somewhat less prepared than we would like. So, bear with me over the next few weeks. I'll post what I can, but things are likely to be a little less orderly than usual.

And finally, I mentioned yesterday that I'd recode the entries into three major categories – Portfolio, Gallery, and Photolog – with my best stuff being in the Portfolio category, the good but not stunning stuff in the Gallery, and everything else in the Photolog category. This is now done and there are 15 shots in the Portfolio, 97 in the Gallery, and 68 (including this shot) in the Photolog. The archive pages need recoding to just use the small thumbnails (it takes some time to load 97 200x150px images and the accompanying text), but that will probably have to wait until I have a bit more free time.

I can see what you mean about the distraction along the left side but overall I think this was a good idea that may just need to be shot again. I agree that a bit more DOF would make the photo stronger but overall this is still a decent shot.

Tom: thanks. In this instance though I can't really reshoot as the position of the fence and the roundabout are fixed. What I really needed was a longer lens, that way I could have zoomed past the detail on the left.

Absolutely wonderful composition. The DOF and choice of B&W certainly adds to the shot.

I wouldn't have centered the subject, moving it to the left of the picture would have been better. But I like the monochrome feel, and even though the DoF does not capture the chain fully, it makes a nice contrast with the blurred background, and especially the person in the ring

Thanks all, and ok, I'll try and reshoot this one with the chain of the left. And hana, yes, it's one of our daughters you can see through the chain. Well, actually it's three of them, but the other two are rather indistinct.

I really like this shot, DOF and B&W are great!

I like the shoot, particulary for the lack of DOF. I know that it isn't what tryed to capture, for what you say, but I like the way it came up... sort of "Peace and Love", no?
