I've tried to stay away from taking too many shots of the Empire State Building. It's not that I don't like the building, it's just that I work there and well... ok, I'm of sick looking at it.
Plus, I have already taken way too many pictures of it. I mean how many more ways is there to take a picture of a building you see every day? I look up from the street and it's the same angles, same lines, same damn sign in the way of my shot.
So this one is a little special. Taken while having drinks with friends at a roof top bar a block away from the Empire State. The clouds slowly drift away as the setting sun cast it's final light of the day onto the building. No signs blocking me, no tourists running into me, just the wide open sky and the Empire State. Seeing that and getting a picture of it absolutely made my night.
It is amazing that a change of location, however big or small, allows you to see an everyday part of your life in a different way. Giving you the chance to once again be fascinated by it, to look at it in awe as if it was your first encounter.
It's amazing the difference going a block down and ten flights up makes.
Great shot, Keith! I never tired of seeing the building. You've captured it so well. The sky is simply amazing, and the colors spectacular.

Great shot. The Overshadowed style is clear to see.

Very nice. I like that you have isolated the Empire State building against the stormy looking background. The wide angle perspective really adds drama to the shot. Well done. Thanks.

Fantastic view of the building and the wide sky. Colours and cloud formations are excellent.

Thanks Keith, this is a wonderful, and RainKing is right, this is a classic Overshadowed shot - wide-angled, moody and dramatic. At this rate nobody will want me to come back ;-)

Keith, very nice. There's a beautiful tension between the subtle sky color and the intense chocolate of the building.

I used to work across the street from the World Trade Center, and every day when I got out of the subway, I would look up and be awed. I don't think I every took those buildings for granted. I was amazed that most people could walk by and never look up. One day, I was standing outside my office, and the sun was reflecting off the Woolworth Building in a way that was totally phenomenal and, I thought, impossible not to notice. There were a few bystanders in equal awe, but most people kept on going and never even looked up.
Reading your note, I was reminded of those thoughts. I'm glad you can still appreciate the Empire State Building, at least on occasion. Great shot.

What a fabulous shot. I love how ominous the sky an building look. Great perspective, too...I found the E.S.B. to be one of the toughest buildings to fully capture. You're really making me miss New York!

This is a great shot and, yes, a fresh perspective. I've certainly never seen it this way. Lighting is perfect. Makes me miss the city, too.

Threatening, but also beautiful photo.
About the smae view every day: for a year I made a photo on the same spot on my way to work. It was a eye-opener to see how many different photo's I got.Weather conditions like blue sky, grey sky, fog, sunset, daylight, nature.....I drove the same route for about 6 years, but only the last year I started to 'see'.......it was fascinating and a joy, because it made each day a bit more exciting.

As already stated, this is a nice image, very stark and almost isolating, but full of mood and intensity. Even though it'd probably be impossible to pull off, I'd almost like to see this taken from a steeper angle, closer to the building, eliminating the other structures. This is a nice image in it's own right though.
