Yesterday's shot was about neglect and abandonment, this one, I hope, tells the opposite story.
Oh, and I did try to come up with a title that tied this shot to yesterday's, but really couldn't think of anything. So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Now this is a weird looking bike...if this would have been buried in the sand, i'd be like...huh? heh..
Like the shot..Love the sepia/b&w conversion.

This is tasty! Very dynamic, again, good job on the toning.
comment byAegir at 11:01 PM (GMT) on 30 August, 2004
Nice, an explosive looking composition... But what on earth is the bike? Is that "low rider" I read on the wheel rim? It looks like a pushbike that wants to be a harley!
comment bydjn1 at 11:17 PM (GMT) on 30 August, 2004
Aegir: this has been parked outside one of our local shops for a few days, but I haven't had time to stop and ask who owns it - it's clearly a custom job of some description. And yes, it does say 'low rider' on the tires. Actually, that's my one regret with the composition for this shot, that I didn't capture the entire word on the front wheel.
comment bydigitalDee at 11:21 PM (GMT) on 30 August, 2004
I like the angle and the duotone colors
comment by Geoff at 11:54 PM (GMT) on 30 August, 2004
I don't really like it. I find the composition just way too cluttered. Everything else in the shot is distracting, from the grill at bottom left to the buildings and awning at top left. Even the unusualness of the bike works against the shot, as you are too close to get a good immediate overview, and as it's not a normal bike you are left wondering what it actually is. It is growing on me the more I look at it, but I much prefer yesterdays.
comment byTristan at 12:10 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
Great shot! I love the chrome shine of the bike. The sepia is very nice (and quite tasteful, i.e. not overdone). Do you mind telling what the settings were for the sepia?
Thanks!
comment bydjn1 at 12:20 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
Tristan: the sepia was done with Hue/Saturation in PS; i.e. this is a colorized image - hue 44, Saturation 20.
comment byPhilB at 12:21 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
Drawing Attention - as a possible title?
Seems suitable as you mention it's been parked outside a shop for a few days.
I like the sepia effect and the sharp focussing.

comment bymyla at 05:27 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
Actually I like the background, the architecture of those buildings is absolutely fantastic. And I like the way the buildings are reflected in the chrome, the sepia was a good choice, although I'll bet high contrast b/w would look great too in this one. Actually I think it's the reflections that make the shot (for me); Dave, this is another favorite. =)
comment byJeremy at 06:41 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
Good composition... but I would have used a larger aperture, as someone said the background is distracting due to the monochrome (hard to distinguish at first glance). The architecture is good but it muddles the eye. Great take on the wheel
comment bywilliam at 06:55 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
the colour is nice, but i prefer yesterday's. maybe it's that i've seen a lot of photos like this(meaning bikes shot from wheel level) so the subject matter isn't as original. but for some reason yesterday's had a much larger impact on me.
one interesting thing about this photo is that it makes me want to move to the right, and look at the bike from a much sharper angle, almost as if i wanted to look at the buildings in the background.
comment byLyle at 07:43 AM (GMT) on 31 August, 2004
As yesterdays was "needs some attention", I'd possibly name this "Gained some attention" or "drew some attention"

I like yesterday's. Flipping between the two, I'm struck by the somber, sad, nostalgic mood of "needs some attention." By comparison, today's photo is an interesting object, but lacks the emotion of yesterday's image. Objects are relatively easy to portray - emotions are not. It is nice to see these rich sepia tones for a change.

is this one of those new bikes that are made to look more like motorcycles than bicycles? i saw some of those at toys for us (as my 3 year old calls it...) they had adult and child sized versions. as someone mentioned, there is a lot to look at in this photo--but i do not find it cluttered, nor the grate, buildings and awning distracting at all. my eye is still drawn directly to the bike itself. i think this angle gives more perspective to the surroundings than a shot lending more of an overview would.

Dave.. I don't think you should be disappointed with the composition. The "low rider" can be seen on the rear wheel and it's nice that we have to work to assemble it looking at "low" and "ider" on the front. It's very symmetric (the wheels are in nearly the identical position) and asymmetric at the same time.
comment by p23e at 04:31 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2004
The reflection on the wheel is subtle yet detailed. Nice angle and tone.
