I got my 17-40 f4L today, but I promised myself that I'd answer all the emails I've had that have piled up over the last week or so before I went out shooting. It's now quarter past nine in the evening, and I still haven't finished but hopefully I'll find some time tomorrow to test it out.
In the meanwhile this shot was taken about six minutes after yesterday's entry, and while I'm not convinced that I'm as pleased with it as my previous one, I do think it turned out ok.

I like the dof on this one.
And I like your response to my previous comment on the other entry.. Good attitude. Very noble.

Oof. I like this one a lot - very agressive, military, big brother-ish, sharp, hard. Akin to being slapped.
Completely at the other end of the scale to your usual pics.

I really like how you've contrasted two similar structures that are so different - one an old tower that tourists visit for a bit of fun, and one a modern post used to monitor the public and 'keep them in check'. And nice use of DoF to really make those spikes stand out.

i think i like this because of the composition mostly. the tower pulls me to the right with the angle and the focus/angle of the 'big brother pole' brings me ight back to the tower. basically, i get caught in the loop of this shot back and forth all day. cant stop staring at it... i'll be there in may, and i'll obviously look for this spot when i get there.

DrtyBlvd expressed my feelings exactly, a very agressive-looking image, made me feel like I should be scared of the people facing the monitor of that camera

I think it's good! Great to see that you've gotten yourself a new camera! Exciting to see what you can produce with an even better camera. Todays photo is far from your best work, but I like it.

I really like this photo and it's not-so-subtle way of reminding me that these cameras are becoming more and more commonplace in our society. Are they a good thing? The innocent man with nothing to worry about might think so, but the potential for their abuse is certainly out there. Very powerfull thing to be able to rewind time. The ATM and security cam shots of the 9.11 terrorists are facinationg and horrifying. Still, the right to privacy is a very important liberty and once those devices go up, it's very unlikely they'll ever come down. A subtle change in scenery, but a pretty big change overall.
I do feel that the tower in the bg clutters the frame a little. Possibly a tad less dof, or maybe a shift to the left to give the spiky post it's own little space to breathe might have enhanced it. Just my opinion. Great shot. I'm glad you posted this.

Thanks everyone.
stretch: you may well be right about the composition but I deliberately chose this shot because the spikes did overlap the tower. In the shots I took where they were separated the composition, IMO, seemed disjointed.
comment bystretch at 01:55 AM (GMT) on 26 September, 2004
I can see that. The overlap does create a strong diagonal through the frame, which brings the two structures together, but if that's the case, then I feel the overall is wee bit left heavy. And I realize this is all nitpicking... it's a great shot.
