I haven't entered any Photo Friday challenges in the last few weeks as I haven't had time to participate, but I couldn't resist this one – Furry – suggested by Heather. We got a couple of kittens at the weekend. Well, I say "we", what I really mean is that our daughters got a couple of kittens, and while I have to confess to not being the world's greatest animal lover I do think these two are cute.
What's interesting about this shot, for me at least, is that I took around 30 photographs and the composition was 'off' on all of them. A lot of them though worked much better at a 4x3 crop (the same as my G5) rather than a 3x2 (my 20D). I suspect that I need to rethink my compositions as it seems that I'm probably falling back on old habits; i.e. attempting to use my 20D in the same way I used the G5.
And I do realise that there are limitless ways to interpret 'Furry' that don't involve pet cats, I just couldn't come up with any today ;-)

Interesting observations on the ratio. I just ordered a 20D after using my G2 for 3 years so you gave me something to look out for. What a sweet little face on the kitty. I can't wait to get my photo blog going, your site has inspired me to prioritize this project to the top of the que

did you adjust the brightness in photoshop? i'm surprised that the camera didnt require exposure compensation for a given scene like this... so white. i would think that it would fool the camera's 12.5% gray meter.
nice feel to the image.

Tin: yes, I lifted the brightness in PS. I should have compensated the exposure – but I forgot. That said, the tonal range of the original was relatively smooth so I'm not sure that I'd have created a better image if I had compensated.

No doubt dreaming of a future feline frolic:-)
Beautiful image - I really like the balance between softness and detail...almost dreamlike.

Great shot! You create so many images utilizing reflections that at first glance that's what I thougt this was. It took a few seconds to realize that was not likely/possible here. Of course, your comments cleared that up completely. The light pink nose in an otherwise colorless image is very subtle but perfectly placed to draw your attention. Good composition (interesting observations on the ratio) and a very pleasing image.

I am not a great fun of animal photos but I really like this one, as someone said before, I was sure the photo was about a cat and its reflection..nice surprise I was wrong :)

You might not be an animal lover right now, but you will be. Cats have the power of mind control over us mere humans: example - you didn't want to post pictures of your pets, but they made you do it (without even waking up!)
lovely shot :-)

i really like this. the photo itself almost feels soft and furry. i feel like i'm right there peeking at the kittens, not just looking at a photo.

I did mushrooms, but this is fine as it is.

For the longest time, I really resisted the practice of cropping photos. It seemed like cheating somehow. For that matter, I did very little post shot processing on my images. But then it occured to me that maybe it wasn't so bad.
Here's the problem. I would frequently be pleased with a composition, only to discover that you couldn't frame it without damaging the image because it would crop too much. So I learned to compose less with my camera and to shoot generally wider than I thought was optimum. That way, I can always crop it to the ratio I think best suits the image later, and in the event I shot to close, not all was lost.
Most pro photographers crop their prints before printing, both in fine art and wedding type photography.
Oh, and I'm a sucker for cute.

Didn't have any problems with a pop-up, although I've seen that happen to others. Thats such a vicious way to put adds on a site.
The photo is marvelous. I love the focus on the subject alone. Its feels likes its own little world. Beautiful.

photoloukey: actually, it is a b&w, other than the nose. Their colouring is more cream/brown. I'll take a picture when they're awake and leave it in colour as they also have very striking blue eyes.
