I'm not entirely convinced that I know what this is (the blurred thing in the background is Blackpool Tower), but I think it's part of a now defunct electric fence to stop pigeons landing on this surface ... but I may be wrong ;-)
Anyway, whatever it is I like this shot, not least because I was escorted off the premises about two minutes after taking it. It's shot from the rooftop car-park of one of our local stores and just after I'd taken it a pair of security guards approached me:
"Do you have a car in this car-park Sir?"
No, I'm just taking photographs.
"Then I'm afraid we'll have to ask you to leave as this is private property."
Would it be ok if I came back with my car?
"No, it wouldn't. Could you come with us Sir?"
And they walked behind me down seven flights of stairs. I did think about making a run for the roof again and taking a few more shots, but I got the impression they wouldn't find it all that amusing ;-)
It's fair enough I suppose, it is private property and they can make their own rules, but I really don't see that taking a few photographs can do all that much harm. No matter, I got a shot I was happy with :-)

I read recently that the mind likes triangles in compositions and I count at least five in this shot. That may be why I find it so appealing. The DOF and the blue tinting set it off wonderfully.
BTW - maybe the electric wires were meant to keep photographers from sanpping at that wall?? Seems like the car park folks are nervous about terrorists . I find that I make police and security people very edgy when they see me shooting lately - especially when I'm shooting buildings. It's a sad commentary on our times.

Seems like the car park folks are unbderpaid drones 'only following orders.' Who cares what they're nervous about....

I really enjoy this shot. I like the fact that the majority of the photo is a sterile white. The DOF works very nicely. I know it's a better shot with the tower, but I would really like to see a shot without it--a nice shot of just the things in the foreground and a shallower DOF.
You're pulling off this 20D quite nicely.

I love the DOF. It almost looks like something in miniture, like needles and thread. Very interesting shot, glad you got it before they chased you off

I got told off in Superdrug the other day for testing the make-up inappropriately, I put a dab on my cheek and a woman came rushing over bellowing "Excuse me Madam (madam indeed !), we do not allow the testing of make-up on the face" , at this point my husband hid as he knew what would come next, "What not even from the tester tube ???" I retorted "We only allow testing on the backs of hands" she replied, "But I don't wear make on my hands" I shouted to which I was asked to move away from the products.
Anyway, I love these new photos with the new camera, and where can I get one of those pigeon frying fences ?

Harsh. Those poor pigeons.

Fantastic! I cannot, for the life of me, see those wires as not being miniture -- like needles. It's hurting my head. Ouch. I must go now.

Nice shot, love the DOF. I was approached in Starbucks after taking one picture of something that was outside the store. I suppose we have to accept that if we are on private property we have no right to take photos.
In your case though Dave, I bet they wouldn't complain if you had snapped some car thieves at work.
I think this and the day before's post are the best in a while.
The DoF is perfect, just the tiny space where the pics are in focus. *On all fours in a 'we're not worthy' style*

I totally agree..the DOF is perfect. First time I saw this one, I thought you took a picture of two nails..then of two umbrella wires :)
Could the DOF be even more shallow?

and your story is bizarre :)

I love the very soft building in the background and the sharpness of the subject. I think this one works very well with the large amount of white space to the right.

Its amazing how something so simple can look so cool...
I like the arrangement of the wires...the triangles just simply jump out at you.....
btw, about your story....its amazing how stict authorities are becoming to photographers....I guess due to the recent terrorist activity, everyone is on high alert....I one time was questioned for taking pictures outside of a hotel i was staying at!!....
comment bysteven at 06:00 PM (GMT) on 11 October, 2004
love the cool feel to this shot. the tower in the background is what makes it, i think. dof is right on.
funny how people are more paranoid these days, no doubt because of what mark mentions above...all the fears associated with terrorists. and people just bugging out in general. i was taking pics outside of a hot dog joint when the guy came out and stood in my way, most likely to scare me off. i left, but i also already had what i wanted.

Outstanding. Really really perfect. I tend to reject my shots where the sky comes out white... maybe I need to give some of them a second look. I love the starkness created by all the white here.

Thanks everyone.
And yes, I guess, increasingly, that we live in a world when any sort of behaviour can be viewed suspiciously.
tiffany: up until recently I did much the same as you; i.e. figure that if the sky was white the exposure must be off, but more and more I find that I like images with either large white or dark/black areas. Simply because we can record a scene relatively faithfully certainly doesn't mean that we should.

How did you get the blue colour?

Ahhh.. this is really quite nice. So, I'll leave this as an echo of all the comments above - wonderfully done. This is certainly one of my favourites to date..

PhilB: the colour is the result of a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer used to colorise the image (settings = 211, 7, 0).
