Well, so much for my plans to put up a week's worth of shots featuring my wife – it just didn't work out today. And don't even ask about the EXIF data for this shot as I have absolutely no idea why I would have been shooting at 1/15s handheld in these circumstances – it's a mystery :-/
Hopefully tomorrow will out work more according to plan.

It's funny that the chimney on the left is damaged while the one on the right is in excellent shape :) A nice but fine photo to end my day. Thanks!

hi, not that it pertains to this image, but what flash unit to you use? not just the on-camera one right?
comment byJarod at 12:41 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
Again, nice colors. I think those powerlines ruin the picture.
comment by Jared at 12:56 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
Great photo. I love the distinct regions I'm seeing formed here, the dark and light sides of the building, and then the dark region of the sky, only accenuated by the powerlines drawing focus to that area. Very impressive work.
comment bydjn1 at 01:06 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
Peng: while these building do look to be in different states of repair they're all scheduled to be demolished some time soon.
tristan: I use the 420EX, but am thinking about selling it and getting one of the new 580EX's, not least because it will automatically compensate for the 20D's 1.6 crop.
Jarod: it's odd how different aspects of a photograph appear/appeal to different people - for me these make the picture rather than ruin it. Oh, and this isn't important, but they're phone cables.
comment bymiklos at 01:10 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
Fairly ordinary shot; it works though. I like how everything that's dark on the left is light on the right side. Good framing and symmetry.

"Fairly ordinary shot"
Ordinary's ok, just don't use the term generic ;-)
comment bymiklos at 01:18 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
Compared to some of your other work.. This is pretty ordinary. However, it's the lighting and symmetry that add the 'extraordinary' touch to it.
There.. I've redeemed myself :) You'll have a better night's sleep i hope... hehe.
comment bymiklos at 01:23 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
Just messin' with ya chief. I like it a lot.
comment bydjn1 at 01:27 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
miklos: yes, you're right, it's not one of my most innovative efforts: I've had this one prepared for quite some time but have managed to avoid putting it up ;-)
And my comment about using the term 'generic' was a reference to the ddoi clone (follow the link if you're interested).
And whatever night's sleep I get it's going to be a short one - it's almost 1.30am here - but I'm playing around with a new profile for my printer from Dry Creek Photo which seems to be considerably better than the one it was supplied with.

I like this, I love the 'ghosts' of history that are visible in the walls of buildings like this.

I love the big cartoon face the front of the house makes. And No Trash/No Parking has a great irony. Also, the feeling of the "golden light" is really good. Good work Sir.

I have to say, I really like this. I think the "ordinary" subject matter is fasinating and I echo 'Monoscope's' comments above.
Still, really looking forward to your portraits.

I used to walk around taking everything at f22. I had to use shutter speeds of 1/15s.
Until I discovered NEW 'chromasia' -the way to use larger apertures!
Now here you are doing the same thing! Usually for me, I did it because I wanted to get extremely long DOF a la Weston. There's usually a piece of grass( or something) in my pictures that Ive tried to keep in focus at the front in the (usually mistaken) belief that this will make the picture better. Is this cropped at the bottom?
I love this evening light, presaging a storm?

Well it's not too sad that these buldings will be demolished soon - but it's good that you have done this shot before that. And for me the phone cables make the picture more interesting.

The 580ex flash unit seems nice but I heard it's quite heavy/bulky...
comment byChristine at 07:29 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2004
I agree with you - I love the phone lines. It is a interesting study in contrasts.

The phone cables make this building appear to be a giant puppet. The center of the building takes on a face-like quality to me. Nice

Thanks everyone.
reggie: can you be a bit more specific about what you don't like about my recent stuff?
tristan: I don't know the exact weights but I don't imagine it can be all that much heavier than the 420EX. I will check though.
comment byJR at 03:04 AM (GMT) on 27 October, 2004
Dave,
Don't sell the 420EX. Just buy the 580 in addition. The 420 can be used in slave mode and can give you AWESOME lighting as they will work in concert and still use TTL metering... Just my 0.02.

If I am not mistaken this is the back of Buchanan Street, viewed from Seed Street?
Reason I think I know is that I acquired all those boarded up properties. If it is where I think it is I have been inside everyone of those properties.
