This is something of a departure from my usual stuff, but I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out, not least because the bit of the shot I intended to be in focus is relatively sharp, despite a shutter speed of 1/100 at the equivalent of 320mm. When the light is a little better (and I can get a higher shutter speed and smaller aperture without a ridiculously high ISO) I think I'll probably go back and take some more shots against this window. I'm not entirely sure what's behind the glass, but it seems to be some sort of reflective (yet matte) material that adds a wonderfully diffuse edge to the reflections.

Oh, and other than a minor saturation increase and a slight Levels adjustment this is a straight shot.

And thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's shot, it's now my second most commented entry after 'more tea?' (which, at 109 comments, is going to take some beating ;-)

B E A U T I F U L . . .

looks like a modern painting

i like the soft (almost pastel) colors in the photo, and the simplicity of the shot. but with the softness comes the blurriness that made me dizzy in less than a minute of staring. i want to spend more time looking at the larger pic but i can't so i have to settle for the thumbnail version.

i am using an hp1730 flat panel on a PC so I don't know if it's not the case on a mac =)

Very interesting use of angles. I was expecting some kind of camera reflection. Interesting use of shapes (blue square, triangles, etc) and a strong composition.

Perfect companion image to yesterday's shot - yesterday's image was heavy and ominous in tone and this today is almost visually cleansing. And I could gaze for days on my Mac:-)

You are right, this is a departure from your normal stuff, and I like it! ;)

The softness is really pleasing to the eye and the reflection is very nice.

Almost Seurat. With just a hint of Mondrian;-). Very Interesting . Fabulous composition.

This would be an amazing wallpaper on a computer. It has a GREAT color dynamic for the soft "out-of-focus" Great job

theres a blue box in the top right - is that supposed to be there? Its a nice image. & very different than your normal reflection shots. Good to see u r pushing your boundaries.

Well done. The blue box doesn't look quite right - difficult to tell if it's part of the reflection or something showing throw the window - but it holds my interest and ultimately adds a lot to the image.

I think this shot would also work well in B & W.

you've captured the feel of my day completely. it's amazing to see this shot after yesterday's. such a contrast. your talent flies all over the place, always hitting the right spot.

I'd like to know what that blue box is as well. I'd say it was a photoshop filter/touchup gone wrong, but it's translucent so I don't know what it is really :) I like the tones, but personally, I don't like the blur. Though I agree with Eric. It would be good for a computer wallpaper, or an advertisement with text over it.

this is really nice, david.

Yeah, what *is* that blue box?

For some reason this picture makes me think of martha stewart. Maybe it's the colors or something.

I don't know about this one...I would like it I think if it were an advertisement with some text or something overlaid, but as a standalone image..... my eye wanders around, looking for something to focus on and all I end up with is that blue box. And that just leaves me puzzled.

comment by tristan.net at 05:40 PM (GMT) on 24 November, 2004

i dig the blue box. makes you look at the picture longer, makes the eyes move around the frame, which is a good thing. realy cool image, my only wish is if it were a little sharper.

comment by Marina at 06:34 PM (GMT) on 24 November, 2004

I had to look at this one for a while. First I didn't really liked it - probably because of the blurriness. But then I have recognised the stripe nearly in the middle of the picture and this one makes the shot really interesting to me. I have no idea why. Maybe because she is moving from one part of the picture to the other one - but I do not really know...
The blue box looks like a paper which is sticked at the other side of the window.

just lovely! i am personally a big fan of these more impressionist type of photos. sharp focus is not always needed, like in this case.

Thanks everyone.

As for the blue box: it's less perplexing in tomorrow's shot.

Lovely dreamy quality...I like this.

comment by manuel at 03:50 PM (GMT) on 7 December, 2004

this is so great... the out-of-focus effect was well chosen and the soft colours give the whole picture a smooth touch. as one visitor already said, it would make a nice desktop wallpaper. or a picture in a frame on the wall :)
