There's a definite art to night photography, and while I'm pleased with this shot I do still think I have quite some way to go before I can produce shots like this one or this one. That said, the one I'm going to put up tomorrow is closer to the sort of thing that I'm after.
As always, let me know what you think.
Update: I was in a bit of a rush to put this one up so didn't expand on the links I included above (hence Ren's second comment below), so ...
The first is one of Bob's recent shots on notraces.com, and the second is one of John's over at orbit1. Both have done some amazing night shots.

Just amazing.
And yes, this is not a constructive comment, I know, but It's just amazing. It's almost surreal...
Oh, btw, the link for the night shots is the same for both.

This is a beautiful shot. Very surreal. The colors are very nice. I especially like the golden raillings against the blue/gray-ish sky.
Better and better... ;)

Nice one David, the golden railing works so well with the blue. I know you don't usually like to crop that much, but if it was me, I might have cropped the structure at left out of the frame. That may accentuate the abstract nature of the shot, concentrating on the wonderful diagonal, curving and horizonatal lines you have going here, but that's just me...

I love it. The light is brilliant, the composition wonderful.

Liquid gold at dusk. Am otherwise rendered speechless.

Great shot and wonderful colours. Now I am really curious what's coming tomorrow...

amazing light and composition. interesting to see how the golden glow seems to come out of the things, just like the radiance of glowing metal in a steel mill.

Is that a 455 sec shutter speed you have listed there? or is it an error?
comment bydjn1 at 11:02 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2004
Cameron: interestingly enough the idea of just shooting the railings didn't occur to me, mostly because I'd deliberately gone out to photograph the structure. I may well go back this evening and re-shoot :-)
Richard: yes, 455 seconds, 7 minutes 35 seconds. Sadly, with such a long exposure, I did notice quite a few hot pixels, but I suspect that this is reasonably normal and simply cloned them out in this shot.

This is a great shot, it doesn't feel quite night here, more a golden sunset or dusk. Bob and John have been doing some great work, John's Holga panorama is my favourite:

Fantastic shot ... i love the warm colors of the railings... and the structure out there in the distance... it's so wonderful to see everyday things under the cover of darkness -- gives one a whole new perspective... you've done an outstanding job with your night shots, Dave -- I'll have to visit this place the next time I'm over :-)

Love those golden tones. I agree a little bit with Cameron about the railing - it's definitely powerful on its own...
