I haven't much time to write anything this evening, mostly because I really need to get some sleep, but I just wanted to say thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's shot. Oh, and let me know what you think of this one :-)

Update: I decided there was something not quite right about the black and white version (which can now be seen here) so have put this version up instead.

So, black and white, or partially colourised?

This shot is wonderful, and I can look at it for hours and not get bored with it.

It reminds me of two things. First: A Radiohead song with the headphones on, because the longer you look (listen) the more nuances you can find.

Second, it reminds me of the magicalness of the cinematography in Moulin Rouge.

Is there a color version?

Sleep? Who needs sleep?
Anyway, fantastic shot. I like it when you go "rough". This is a tad bit creepy and extremely interesting.

I actually prefer the black and white version...

Whooo, a bit creepy with Jim Carrey peering out of the corner, but I like the darker images that you take.

This photo reminds me of Radiohead as well: I just don't get it.

Note that this is probably the fault of the viewer, not the photographer. :)

The color one is much more vivid. I loved how it took me a few to find my barrings. You're really mastering the reflection shots, as of late. However, I know this isn't a reflection, per se. Dark, moody, and lovely.

comment by pablo korona at 02:11 AM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

i think its "darker" and more discernable as the semicolored version.

comment by Yvette at 03:15 AM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

Colorized is the way to go - adds to the rich texture of the shot. Very nice!!

comment by Brad at 04:49 AM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

I certainly like the color version more. And I must say that the movie poster with Jim Carey on it really seems to make the shot for me.

comment by David at 06:13 AM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

I see it as the past to the present ... which just makes me feel a little creapy :)

Nice shot!.

Well done once again.

the b+w version doesn't work as well as the colour with this image, it's flatter and seems to have less areas of interest.

comment by peterv at 06:26 AM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

For me the more colourised one is better. As pablo says, it's "darker". Good composition too. That must have been a long green light!

Man, you're killing me. I feel exactly the same about this image as I do about "don't look up" and for the same reason, but I don't think I can find the words to describe what they have in common. All I can say is: good eye, David.

I much prefer the black-and-white version. I wish I hadn't seen the colorized one. It has a certain chaotic intelligence that loses its edge in color. Plus, it's more sparkly. :)

Thank goodness we're back to gritty realism ;-) - although yesterday's shot was really beautiful BTW, I felt no need to add to the fountain of comments that sprang up.
Colour works best in this shot in my view, much better balance throughout the frame and more impact from the disturbing face (for a moment there I thought it was your sleep-deprived reflection!) I spend ages in my work creating composite shots like this in PS and you just find them on the bus ride home - there's no justice in this world...

How do you get such great images? Sheesh!

comment by Jorge at 01:07 PM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

I love the partially colourised version. BTW seen your pictures adds another reason to weake up everyday.

wow very surrealistic

Fantastic image. Reminds me of Dave McKean's work. I'm wondering though, is this a straight photograph or a photoshop composition?

comment by P at 04:14 PM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

the colourised version, definately. i love the layers in this image. the more i look, the more i see!

comment by djn1 at 04:28 PM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

Thanks everyone.

Isolated: there is a colour version in the sense that there's an original layer in the Photoshop file, but I'm not going to put it up as the colour balance just didn't work with this shot.

fraxinus: at least you're warm while you're doing it! ;-) I spent half an hour stood there waiting for the bus to leave so I could shoot a version with just the car light trails on the right. But it didn't move, and I got fed up with waiting.

Thomas: it's a straight shot. I occasionally remove minor distractions from a shot, but I don't add stuff in. Well, maybe some colour to an otherwise dull sky, but no actual detail or content.

As for why it reminds people of Radiohead: I don't know why.

comment by Chelsea June at 06:36 PM (GMT) on 16 December, 2004

I really like this- it's creative and the color version reminds me a vintage promo poster. It also has a lot of stuff going on, which in this case makes the image more intresting. Great photo again!

i like this one. there is a lot of things i can discover there watching the picture long minutes..

I love the way you love reflections!

OH man, colorizedl; definatly. It adds more depth to the picture and a gritter mood. The b&w seems to have a blue hue to it... it takes so much away. Yeah got to go with the slight color.

comment by DAthas at 04:04 PM (GMT) on 17 December, 2004

A real life montage (I assume), with many interesting arenas and layers of discovery.

Almost every corner makes me uncomfortable -- the "tilting" bus, the blind spot in the center, the suggestion of a young child running toward the bus, the unstable sign, the "unfortunate" ghost -- but the wave does a wonderful job of holding it all together..

The colorized version warms my perspective and makes it easier to study the image, so I definitely prefer that version for that and other reasons.

awesome picture!

comment by Amy at 08:25 PM (GMT) on 30 January, 2005

this is by far my favorite photo of yours. i don' t really know why i love it, but i love it. the colorized version adds a lot to the picture, and there's so much in it that i can sit here and look at this for hours! i think you're an amazing photographer, and i love your work!

comment by Duke of Orsino at 12:28 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2005

amazing! the two children in the "series of unfotunate events" poster seem to be running toward the bus. it's like they're really there.
