Although there are entries on chromasia that date as far back as July 2003 I always consider its 'official' birthday to be February 5th, as it was on this day last year that I i) decided to post an image a day, and ii) registered chromasia at photoblogs.org. And back then I guess there were three things that I wanted to achieve; to post an image a day, to become a better photographer, and to join in with the ever-expanding photoblogging community.
I didn't quite manage to post an image a day, but I did get close. Since this time last year 364 images have been posted on chromasia, of which eight were guest entries (on today's entry the guest entries are the ones I've used for the number 1 in the bottom right of the image). Hopefully, especially since I can now 'future post' with MT v3, I'll manage 365 over the next twelve months ... fingers crossed.
In terms of becoming a better photographer: I think I still have quite a way to go, but I do think I'm noticeably better than I was 12 months ago.
As for joining in with the photoblogging community: I guess it's this aspect of chromasia has been the most rewarding. Over 6000 comments have been left in the last year, and the vast majority have encouraged me to continue, critiqued my work as necessary, and given me the impetus to keep going. I've also met numerous people from around the world who have made my photographic journey a considerably richer experience, and I now consider many of these as my friends. But I guess that those people are only a fraction of the people who visit chromasia: I have around 50000 unique visitors each month from around 74 different countries (based on data for 2004) – all of which never ceases to amaze me.
So thank you to all of you; as always it's very much appreciated.
I also need to thank Brandon Stone and everybody else who has contributed to photoblogs.org, as without it I suspect that chromasia wouldn't be anywhere near as popular or as well frequented. And I'd also like to thank Sam for the inspiration for the format for today's entry. I know other people have done this too but it was Sam's ddoi year 1 collage that I came across first.
And last but not least, I also need to say a H U G E thank-you to my wife as I know that she's one of the very few women in this world who would put up with me spending so much time and effort here. Thank you.
And there are many more people I could thank and should mention, that I know or have met during this last year, but hopefully you already know that I'm grateful.
And I suppose I could go on with this entry indefinitely, but I won't. All that remains for me to say is that I hope you enjoy year two :-)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I love this one, did you use Picasa2 to make this huge collage? At any rate, I absolutely love how if you look close you can see people's faces staring back at you every so often. Poweful piece, and I think it'd look amazing covering a full wall of a house.
Keep up the good work!

I'm quite impressed with how your talent has "blossomed" -- you set out a year ago with a goal to improve your photography and the improvement can actually be traced along the year's images. That's not to say that your first pictures weren't good, but your latest photos feel more natural: the presence of the camera is less obvious and the photos feel less photo-y and thus more life-y. That's why yours is the best photoblog on the web, in my humble opinion, and why I've been inspired to attempt the same goal. Keep it up!

Congratulations on the anniversary Dave, during this last year you have presented us with evidence of a remarkable journey. I first checked in sometime during July and it was obvious from the start that here was something different. Even though some of those early pictures were not quite in the same class as many since, they were all beautifully done and, more importantly, they were often about photography, not just using photography. Everyone will have their own favourites, the variety you present caters for all tastes - well done!
comment by Robb at 01:19 AM (GMT) on 6 February, 2005
Congratulations on the anniversary. I've been watching your site for some time, and have even shown some of your snaps in the class I teach (Freshman Composition at a 4-year university) as examples of the way rhetoric works in the image. You might be interested to know that your site shares an anniversary with the death of Marianne Moore (the poet, d. 1972). Or you might not :-). Keep shooting -- your work is consistently engaging on aesthetic and intellectual levels.

Some of my fotos arent bad, but in general most of them have theese beginner typical "errors" (? dont know the right word, i hope you know what i mean). let me ask you, how old are you and how long do you take photos now? I started visiting Chromasia at photo 19-7.
19-7, 16-7, 16-8 and 22-10 made me sigh and feel all warm and wonderful inside.
20-0, 22-3, 22-5, 10-3 had turned me green with envy and wished I have half the talent you have.
While 3-11 delightfully shocked me (hiks), 11-0 - brought tears to my eyes…. been praying for one for a long time now for me and wife…
My favourite? Definitely 19-5. And it is hard to choose when all are just so awesome.
0-7 had kept me staring for a long long while and left me in awe….
In summary, you just brought out so many emotions in me (as I am sure to others as well) which made your Chromasia unique. Thanks for ‘inviting’ me (us) into your and your family’s life through a fascinating journey.
And, congratulations…..
Dave ~ Thank you for being a most noble and deserving King of the Photoblog. It's always a joy to look at your work and the fact that you hand out so much information along with your posts is nothing short of completely generous. Thanks to your wonderful wife and family, as well, because we all know the sacrifice it takes to maintain a daily photoblog. You're the best! Happy Anniversary!

Keep shooting -- your work is consistently engaging on aesthetic and intellectual levels.
happy birthday.
i hope i could say the same this summer with my blog.
thanks for your inspiration.
congratulations on year 1 -- the collage is fantastic. :)

You and your photoblog gave me so much inspiration and courage. After seeing your photoblog I've setup my own photoblog and try to post a-photo-a-day, even though I'm just a beginner. Thank you so much.

Happy Birthday for Chromasia!
On that link you sent for the photo of your abby, I've been wondering how you get the bluish tones you get for pictures of people? Curves? I'd appreciate it if you told me.
Happy Birthday, whilst I watch a few photoblogs yours is the only one I have set in Firefox to open every day . I enjoy it I learn from it and Im frequently frustratd at how good you are and how lousy I am. Happy Birthday.

Dare you to make this one an image map linking to each of the entries. ;)
This is a cool way to remind yourself where you came from, but hopefully it makes you even more excited about what's to come.
Keep it up.
THANKS, VERY COOL
hey,
happy birthday and congratulations .
I love your photos. I'm "reading" you blog since some months, but never did a comment. But today, i think, is the best day to start with some commenting....
I hope, someday, i will be able to take photos, which are so fascinating like yours. Some of my fotos arent bad, but in general most of them have theese beginner typical "errors" (? dont know the right word, i hope you know what i mean). let me ask you, how old are you and how long do you take photos now? (im 17, photographing for some months or so... you and DDOI "helped" me, to start loving photos )
Sorry for me bad english, im from germany ;)

Great work David! wish you the best luck for the future...
Aegir: I did think about turning this entry into an image map, but as it was it took me about five hours to create it in the first place so I decided it was probably too much trouble ;-)
happy birthday djn1 !!
Since one year, i visit all days your photoblog. You are a model for me.
Thks for that !
Happy Birthday! I look at your site every day but, more often than not, there are already many comments on that day's photo and I struggle to know what to say that would add anything of interest, so I've become something of a quiet admirer!
But, although I'm late again, I didn't want to let this shot go by without a comment. I always enjoy your work. It's consistently creative and I have learnt an awful lot from the high standards you set.
Best of luck with year two!
Beautiful mosaic. And congratulations!

many congratulations and thanks for inspiring photos!
Nice. Congratulations to your anniversary. I wish many beautiful photos in the future.
