First of all, many thanks from both me and my wife for all the wonderful comments on yesterday's entry. Hopefully I'll be documenting our journey towards parenthood and will be putting up various shots over the coming months. And I was going to say that you probably shouldn't expect any shots of the actual birth, but then I remembered there's an intervalvometer on my remote release so you never know ;-) Anyway, thanks again, we both really appreciate all you kind words.
As for this shot: it's somewhat more sombre than my recent stuff, but I quite like the way it turned out.

First of all.....congrats to you both. How exciting! Second of all, I love this image. Well, okay, I check you site daily, and love all of your work, I've just never left a comment before, but this photo really 'got' to me. Great work.

I guess i'm a day late but as the saying goes " better late then never" ... so congrats and best wishes on the good news yesterday.

the umm.. sparse distribution of color (sorry, i've been at a closing seminar for a grad course for three days now, hence the academic wording) really appeal to me. good range of tones, graphically simple... and the duality puts a twist to it.

This is a very nice image. I think the almost total obscuring of the eyes is what makes it. It has a futuristic, police-state feel. Don't ask me to explain how I got that but it's reminiscent of a sci-fi movie scene.

Although I discovered your photoblog just a few days ago, I have clicked through most of your pictures, and I really love your style. But this photo really is one of the best images I ever saw. I can't really say why, probably because my English isn't good enough. But anyway, congratulations, and keep up the good work!

Shiny metal and pale flesh juxtaposed in cool, dark, monochromatic tones... these are a few of my favorite things.

Did I mention the eyes in the metal? Chilling!
comment byben at 01:33 AM (GMT) on 22 January, 2005
beautiful balance of the monochromatic elements with washed skin tones. chrome, flesh, dark, and yes - futuristic. can i ask if there was any particular post-processing involved to achieve the monochromatic flavour?

Great monochrome image! So many eyes looking at me, it's kinda creepy. But the lighting does this photo justice. Great mirror image. However, the message this photo sends to me is that "Beauty is only skin deep". You'll see what I mean if you compare the left reflection with the one on the right. It's as if she's looking at herself in the mirror, only to see how superficial she is.
Just my $0.02

Very nice photo, I like how the red lipstick captures my eyes.
A Matrix-style feeling mixing beauty and urban style.
Regarding the pictures of the baby during the delivery ? Surely some very nice shoots to do, I am just wondering what the nurse and my wife would say if I take my Mamiya in May when my wife delivers our son...

This is a better shop window than the last one you put up. I like the reflections. I'm not sure (as usual) about the position of the divide between the two faces. Given that the left hand one is darker (because it's a refelction) could the divide have been more to the left? Would this have improved the composition?

:-) Thanks again for the congratulations.
Jerome: no, you didn't mention them ;-)
Ben: the monochromatic feel was created in several stages. There's a Channel Mixer adjustment layer, set at 61% opacity, that was used to extract the red channel. Above that there's a Curves adjustment that in addition to increasing the contrast decreases the reds in the shadows and bumps the blues in the midtones. And finally, there's a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer that colorizes the image as follows: 53-25-0 – this layer is set to 29% opacity.
Thinh: that's one of the messages I get too.
Richy: my wife has given me strict instructions to make sure I do get some shots!
peterv: I know what you mean about the position of the divide but I think that had I placed it more to the left, it would have been a more traditionally balanced shot, but I think it would have lost a bit of the tension too.
