I managed to get out for an hour this afternoon and went down to the beach with my friend John from shotsphotography. I took my macro lens and managed to get at least three, maybe four shots that I'm happy with. I was also snapped by John and it's one of the very few portraits of myself that I'm happy with, so thanks John.
As for this shot: it was the last one I took today and, despite appearances to the contrary, this is a relatively straight shot – the light reflected from these binoculars was spectacular. The view through them was pretty awesome too: we could see the north coast of Wales, what was probably the Isle of Man, and a gas drilling platform burning a column of flame on the horizon. It was a good afternoon.
PS: this isn't a shot of John, this is a guy we met as we were leaving the beach.

What a cool shot! That red color from the binoculars really "pops" out of the picture and matches his sweater perfectly. The background is very calm and your reflection in his "eyes" is a very nice little detail. A perfect picture IMO :)

nice to meet you Dave (via John)! Both of your portraits are
very enjoyable.

It's a much better version of a similar shot I've taken of my younger brother. Does it bother you that the reflection has you in it?
comment bydjn1 at 03:15 PM (GMT) on 5 February, 2005
Duncan: no, it doesn't bother me, I quite like being in the shot.

Woah. This shot is fascinating. The textures and ruddiness on his skin and every hair on that sweater. The red binoculars are so surreal against the pale grey background. Do I want to hang it on my wall? MMm... no, LOL it's too unnerving. But it's definitely startling and effective. Great work.
ps. Did ya see my recent mention of you on my blog? http://electricboogaloo.net/archives_2005_02/0203/index.htm ;-)

Thanks! Pfffff mine's a blurry mess. Which kind of conveys how I was feeling at the moment I guess. *GRIN* Does it ever really seem real? :-)

This is hilarious, and amazing. One of my favs of yours, Dave.
Is tomorrow's entry going to be what you were busy with in John's photo?
No, tomorrow's 'shot' is a bit different ;-)
