When I first previewed this shot I wasn't sure about it, but the more I've looked at it the more I like it; partly because it continues the 'selective focus' theme from yesterday but also because it's visually much simpler than a lot of the stuff I produce. And I guess visual simplicity, at least in terms of composition, is something that I've been thinking about lately.

like the tower in the back. What is it exactly?

That's Blackpool tower. Home of ballroom dancing and erm... comedy, fake plastic boobs.

Very, very nice. Love that you chose to focus on the wires, that's very unique... Perfectly executed of course, like always...

I'm digging the selective focus. It's almost as if these are two separate photos.
comment bySteve at 12:14 AM (GMT) on 19 March, 2005
I don"t care for the selective focus. It looks like a blurry picture of
a tower to me.

Chris: Blackpool, or so we're told, is cleaning itself up - I hardly saw a single plastic boob last summer. I did see some plastic arses in kilts though so there's still some way to go ;-)
Steve: that's because it's a blurry picture of a tower ;-)

I appreciate the simplicity of this photo. Maybe it's just me, but I think your busier shots can sometimes feel forced. Perhaps the selective focus on this one would feel that way to some, but I think the simplicity helps to make it work and feel "natural" (as opposed to forced). It's a beautiful shot! Shows you've been doing a lot of thinking and practicing, and now it's really coming together.

hilarious! very creative framing. the flag blowing in the background makes it appear even more harrowing for the "tight rope walker".
by the way, what does "four over one" mean. sorry- just do not know. :)

Definitally a high shutterspeed, and I would think with that apreture would be more blurred in the background. But I do like the selective focus.

This is not too simple...For me it is a complex composition...I like your selective focus...But i prefer yesterday´s shoot...

you took it without flash?...
it's a good composition to me....i think it would be good if i have this picture and i make with color...

kate: it never occurred to me that it looked like a tightrope walker, but I see what you mean. As for the title: I was a bit stuck – it just refers to the four quadrants over one tower.
seribu: no, no flash.

I'm glad to hear its cleaning up its act, although it does mean that its drifting away from the californian norm...
plus, I should have said, your photography is fantastic. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Focusing on the lines makes this photograph an interesting piece.
I agree with seribu sembilu, I wonder how this photograph would look in vibrant color especially with the sky used as a backdrop.
Frankly I am not sure whether I really enjoy this photograph, but it does bring out a reaction, even though it is simple on one hand, it's also somewhat noisy.

this is a cool website. I like the interface but wonder how you keep the crap posting out. I guess this is a good test - if it lets me post this I will know there no protection
