The weather today was glorious, and for the first time in months it seemed as though the drab and dreary greyness of winter might be coming to an end. Anyway, we took the kids and their scooters to the park, hence this shot. And I'm not normally a great fan of selectively colorised images (though have produced a few) but I thought it worked well for this shot.

I agree. In fact I think that, is the colorisation that brings so many life to the image. The blue tone fits perfect with the context, it looks like a blue Paul's picture . :) Are those here shoes? Look a little bit big for me. :p

This is an amazing shot! I love the composition and the post processing both! Bravo!

I was just wondering if the yellow was that saturated or you bumped that up a bit.
comment bydjn1 at 09:25 PM (GMT) on 19 March, 2005
Adriana: they do look big, but they do fit.
Chris: the shoes were masked and a separate curve was applied to them. It's this that's upped the saturation rather than anything else I did. Also, I think the contrast with the blue of the rest of the image makes the yellow stand out more noticeably.

Oh, now I have to break out my old Docs.

A return to your more traditional style, which I like very much. A near-perfect composition in my option, though I wouldn't mind seeing the area of sharp focus extend a little more toward the back of the scooter.
comment byfederico at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 19 March, 2005
I think the colors are appropriate.Yellow and blue are perfect together.
comment byjustin at 10:10 PM (GMT) on 19 March, 2005
Something almost comic about it, not sure why, but I like it a lot - very cheerful!
Doc's! Very cool --- Love the blue... LOVE the scooter... nice shot, david...

Agree with alex long, this is certainly your style, and you are very good at it.
The colors work great for this one.
I love the way the shoes seem to be/are way too big.

I bought Docs last month.. I've never had them before. And I'm 24 years old.. Talk about being deprived.
I also have to agree with "Alex" Long. This is more chromasia style..It is a good change from the boringness (if that's a word) of the last couple of days.
It's not "amazing" (as claimed) but it sure is good.

Great shot...The colorization is great.

I agree, a nice change. I don't think the other stuff was bad, but this is just different. Variety is the spice of life, or something along those lines...

I love it. Did she pose or did you take it while she was riding? I've been having some trouble catching action shots...
comment bymiles at 04:40 AM (GMT) on 20 March, 2005
I'm not normally a big fan either but this works so well with the tint, and there's something about it that's so English too, I'm guessing it's the boots :)
comment byJohn at 08:09 AM (GMT) on 20 March, 2005
Nice shots dave - I actually would have liked to see it as a normal shot with the grey of the tarmac. I think that might have provided a better contrast with the blue of the docs.

I agree with you about how the selective color option can be overdone, but in this case, the yellow stitching and yellow tag on the tongue make this worthwhile. My question: is blue the only color you messed with, or did you remove other colors, as well? It seems that with the lighting, this photograph may have been somewhat monochromatic to begin with.

Have you considered opening a forum for general discussion? I think there's a lot of like-minded photo-cognescenti here who would enjoy that facility.
Happy to assist if that were a consideration.

Thanks everyone.
Alec: I agree, a touch more depth would have helped.
miklos: thanks, I think ;-)
Caroline: she was posing. I did try some action shots but they didn't work out.
John: the colour version didn't work, mostly because there was a colour clash between her tights and the neck of the scooter - it just unbalanced the image.
matt: the neck of the scooter is bright red, and there's a magenta stripe in her tights, both of which, IMO, drew your attention away from the boots.
David: yes, I've thought about it. I'll post something up with tomorrow's entry.

This is just lovely...the overall bluish tint works so well with those bright white highlights. And Doc Martins just remind me of my punk rock youth.
