Yeah, I know, this is a slightly cropped version of the last frame from yesterday's entry, but I've put it up for a couple of reasons. First, my daughter helped post-process this one – I was under strict instructions to get the colours just right – so, given her help I thought it would be nice to put it up. Second, it taught me a lesson: that it doesn't pay to be complacent. I had assumed that at a range of around a yard an aperture of f/2.8 would have given sufficient depth of field to get most of the Gameboy in focus; i.e. an inch or two. But according to this depth of field calculator the DoF is actually less than a third of an inch – just enough to get the Nintendo logo in focus. So, at some point soon, I'm going to print out some DoF charts and memorise them :-)
On a totally unrelated matter, and I've mentioned this in the news section of the comments, chromasia has been nominated in two categories for the Photobloggies, 2005 Awards; "Best European / British / Irish Photoblog" and "Photoblog of the Year" – this is a big honour, so many thanks to everyone who nominated me. You can vote in all 25 categories for the next six days, but it's worth dropping by the site anyway to check out the broad range of sites that are represented.

This is a great portrait, one your daughter will most likely adore for years to come. I'm happy you decided to post one from yesterday's montage. I'm not sure which way I like it better.

Its more of a snapshot to me. I prefered yesterday, the expressions captured more. This one just seems a bit lifeless to me.

After seeing them in the sequence I didn't think just one alone would look right but I like this one. I really like the composition and the color of the GB.

the DoF in this photo isn't really working for me dave :( i think this is largely due to the lack of clarity of her face, particularly around her eyes - it might just be a TFT monitor that produces that effect to this extent.. but it's kinda scary :-/
anyways. thats probably just me :| um.. will be sure to vote for you in the upcoming elections.. and remember: only labour does smear campaigns o_O i expect you to win fair and square..

she (and you) got the colors just right! ;)

Great colors, I agree.
That's one thing I did (and somtimes still do) is overestimate the DOF on my f/2.8 100mm...especially in macro shots where the DOF is even more shallow. I think you did a fine job of capturing the clarity where it mattered though.
Concerning the face, I think it looks fine, depending on what effect you want to achive. You can still see the emotion in the face, and it looks a lot like a painting...almost smeared. This DOF also gives a sense of distance or closeness (whatever you want to call it). I like. :)
Great capture!

Great photo. Very well done. Depth of feild is the key to this photos perfection. I personally like the colour tones too. The sharp metalic purple and the silver markings of the logo. Also who can help but like a childs happy smile. It is a feel good food that makes my day a little nicer. Thanks for the smile.
I wish I was half as talented as you are with your photos.

after gorgeous snaps of sandy sea shore or bloody sunsets the photo you just published brings no rush.

Thanks everyone.
Lulu: no, it doesn't really have a 'wow factor', but I do like it, more because it's a shot of my daughter enjoying herself than it's a great photograph, but I like it nonetheless.

Oh to have 11 year old hands again. Look at those beautiful nails!

And finally, Jessyel Ty Gonzalez has his interviews up and running again. The latest is with Tanner Woodford (from ashadeofgrey) and there are another 23 in the archives, all of which are well worth a read, even if I do say so myself ;-)
