I took our two eldest daughters to Blackpool Pleasure Beach yesterday and managed to survive the Pepsi Max Big One (the third biggest coaster in the world, I think, seen in the background of this shot) and various other rides and experiences. And while the Pepsi Max was rather daunting (it gets up to 74mph down a corkscrewing, almost vertical 200 feet drop), by far and away the most horrible experience of the day was the 'haunted swing'. This was a bench-like device, inside a room that rotates around the swing; i.e. the swing doesn't move, the room does – in an unpleasantly nauseating manner.

Anyway, I had my G5 with me yesterday, and didn't take a great deal of shots (maybe one more that I'll put up), but I will go back with the 20D at some point just to take photographs.

Oh, and the title of this shot refers to the coaster in the foreground of this shot; the Revolution. Fortunately neither of my daughter's wanted to go on it ;-)

at least you weren't dizzy enough to be unable to focus right...

I used to like coasters. But this summer riding a fast, inverted, corkscrew coaster screwed my blood sugar up for three hours. Must have been the adrenaline.

All that aside, this is a nice shot--active without being cluttered.

It would be cool if you could start posting which lens you used to take the shot. :)

Robert: I didn't exactly feel at my best after we'd been on it ;-)

Jason: I do, but the G5 only has one ;-)

I realized that just after posting. :)

Isn't it too cold for roller coaster rides? +10°C at 74mph cannot be all that pleasant..

comment by djn1 at 10:17 PM (GMT) on 25 March, 2005

miklos: it was t-shirt weather in sunny Blackpool yesterday. Seriously, for a few hours at least, it was almost like summer.

It's funny how when I view this with the white background it's like "oh, remember being a kid and riding roller coasters?" even though I hated them. But if I change it to the black layout, it's got this sort of looming, evil-death-trap feel to it. It reminds me much more of the reality that I pretty much never rode them because I didn't like them. hah.

Great framing and toning.

haha, love it Dave, nice composition and toning.

Wow. The moment I saw this shot, the jaw in my mind dropped. Very nice.

comment by Sharla at 06:28 AM (GMT) on 26 March, 2005

Ansel Adams could take a great picture with as little as an oatmeal box and a pin. I swear you can, too.

Very nice pic. Lots of great sweeps and swoops used very effectively. The toning was the right call.

I especially like the ride that is framed in the middle. It looks like two giant birds squaring off. Incredible that you could catch such a break with the bank of clouds.

I've yet to decide if you're fantastic or just favored.

The contrast really speaks, nice dark parts close to really light ones and everything in between, breat B/W (with a little yellow I supose?). I wish my conversions to B/W turned out in this fashion. Very nice, thanks!

Gorgeous. It actually reminds me of the recent animation film Robots. Only this photo is much better than the movie.

Not one to comment often, but this shot is amazing.

Were the rides on yet when you took this?

I like the shot, and the subject....but I dont like the toning. It seems like a nice sunny day, with a nice sky. Would of been nice to see it in full color. I like the contrast...but I think color would fit this one better. But thats just my opinion.

Forgive me if this is anything less than appropriate, but the first thing that came to my mind looking at this shot was a woman's womb. I heard once that the arc was originally invented because people saw the strength of the shape in a pregnant woman. The ride looks similar, and I cannot help but see ovaries in the background. The mechanics of the objects make an especially interesting presenation of nature. I doubt this is what you intended, but it shows me how differently images can impact people. This is a beatiful shot.

I'd also like to echo Sharla's comment. Your ability to present simplicity in a stunning way always amazes me. I find myself constantly worrying about what lense you used, what processing, etc... indeed it's because I like to pretend that but for the lack of proper equipment I might be shooting the same. But alas, I doubt this is really the case.

Cheers, and happy Easter.

In true radio talk show form: "First time - long time". As in, first time poster, long time lurker...

Although you have posted this scene in many forms over the past months, I can never get enough of it. Something about the park/setting/location is truly captivating. Of course your tones and composition makes it feel even more so that way... Congrats on the Photobloggies...you deserve it. Happy Easter. -T
