Hopefully you're not getting too bored with tilt/shift and/or Lensbaby shots – I'll try and use a normal lens tomorrow ;-)
As for this one: it was taken yesterday evening on Blackpool's seafront down near the South Shore, and while I suspect that some of you may find it just a bit too minimalistic, I'm pleased with the effect, not least because it's a definite contrast to yesterday's effort and demonstrates the Lensbaby's versatility.
Oh, and I know that today's and yesterday's are radically different in style, but I'd be interested to hear which you prefer and why.

djn: "ok, no, I don’t put things up to get a rise out of people, and no, chromasia’s sole reason for existence is not the public, and no, it’s not a mind game" and: "Oh, and I know that today’s and yesterday’s are radically different in style, but I’d be interested to hear which you prefer and why."... seem to kind of contradict each other no?
Now I'll hush for another couple of weeks :)

Adriana: the house fixing is going slowly. Well, it's actually not going at all at the moment but I'll get on with it again this weekend.
miklos: it depends on whether you see art as a monologue or a dialogue. I go for the latter.
Jeremy: I did think about setting up a forum, and installed one for a few days, but I decided I didn't have time to do it justice, at least not at the moment.

Gorgeous. Far and away the nicest picture of the last days. No such thing as too minimalistic.
Hey, I like this much better than yesterday's shot. The arch looks like something from nature rather than man-made. Sort of like the neck of a Apatosaurus. The grey tones are smooth and lovely and I think it fits the "lens baby" style much better than the more vivid colors from yesterday. A nice piece of abstract modern art. I knew you could get something very "Chromasia" out of that thing.

comment bysam pardue at 03:26 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2005
Hello David,
While I enjoyed both your two recent Lensbaby photos, I do prefer this second shot. I have seen a lot of Lensbaby shots. . . a whole lot (as the Co-CEO of Lensbabies I see new work everyday.) What I have observed is that over time photographers develop an aesthetic using the lens. Often, a photographer will initially use a Lensbaby to shoot photos that are much like what they would have shot with straight glass, but with the selective focus added. Yesterday's shot is kind of like that.
This light post photo is using the selective focus in a way that really compliments the subject matter. The blur creates a sense of motion, and propels the eye upward to the light fixture. The the eye returns to the bottom right corner and then follows the arch again. It's an interesting effect.
Please keep shooting with your Lensbaby. I think your work is outstanding. I enjoy the controversy the Lensbaby photos engender. Just have fun.
Sincerely,
Sam

I like this one. Maybe because of the cool blue colors. I always wanted to get a lens baby. Looks like a lot of fun! I just got a 50mm f1.8 so I can now go out into the city at night and get some decent pictures. Time to go explore!

I think what we need to remember as well is that although Dave has been incredibly successful with his photoblog he will be the first to admit that he is still defining and moulding his own style which will become more and more apparent as the years go on.
I too would like to see more minimilistic work but that is my own preference and nothing more
I think most photographers are doing this no matter what level they are at. There is a book called ' Approaching photography' which is regarded as the seminal work on photography and how and why we do it.
When I read that book I realised that it is simply not enough to put up some work and say that it speaks for itself. Sometimes we have to explain our work and that is often harder than actually taking the photograph.
Not sure whether I am right here but I think that djn puts up his work for both himself and for the public. For himself he gets the chance to improve his photography and for the public we get to see the results of someone who is passionate about what they do.
It has to be a two way communication to suceed.
When you sense that someone cares about what they do it is a pleasure to interact with them.
I for instance only started my blog a few months ago - there is no chance on this earth that I will become as popular as chromasia but to be honest this is not a popularity contest.

This is a fantastic shot. I think it's your best Lensbaby shot so far.
The focus on the head of the lamp and the blur does, as others have said, add a motion component that is common in Lensbaby compositions, but your composition and shooting angle really give an organic, living curve to the lamppost. I think this is really fantastic.
I do find, however, that the blackspace in the lower right is a bit distracting. My eye keeps getting drawn to it instead of the head. It's a little better with the lighter backgrounds.
Really nice job.
