I know, I said no more Lensbaby shots for a while, but I went out today and came back with a complete load of dross so had to rescue something from the other day.

As for this shot: it's another self-portrait in the world's largest mirror ball (Blackpool, UK).

Incredible,
It looks just like a radial blur in photoshop.
Very cool!

I love it. Amazing are you.

This is really fantastic. The mirror ball must be a tempting place when you're stuck for a photo!! I suppose you have to resist the temptation and try not to kick the ar$e out of it! The lensbaby is interesting...

Woah. This is a crazy looking shot. I sort of looks like glass that has shattered into perfect squares. Amazing.

Jay/Kayleigh/Matt: thanks.

Stuart: yes, it's tempting, but because it's so high up it's very difficult to get anything other than the same old background in the shot. It kind of limits its possibilities.

I like the dynamic feel it has (although it's not clear it's a mirror ball, because the squares seem to be the stones under your feet - which creates a nice confusion). What I don't like is that we only see the camera lens. Maybe I'm just tired of the "autoportraits" which only portrait the camera...

Even though it's always tempting and too easy to use a mirror and take a self-portrait, I still feel that this photo is fantastic. It would be a "oh yeah, there's another mirror self-portrait", but the added effect of it being a mirror ball plus the distortion from the lensbaby is cool. Plus, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of you, so at least we have a semi-clue about what you look like. :)

Love it.

Hehe this is fun!
love the play with the pieces of rocks and the pieces of mirror... a really nice match! The only thing on you thatīs sharp is toyr shoelace and Iīm so happy about it.. īcause what makes this pic (in my opinion) is the perfect match between square rocks and mirrors.. love it..

But it would be really nice to se a portrait of you that really give away more than your haircolor...

Andrea and Andreas: I do have a few self portraits up that you can view as a gallery or in the standard category format :-)

Hey, this is just fantastic. The combination of mirrors & lensbaby is wonderful...I love the way the mirrors do a kind of fracturing of the image...

nice photos...

I have been on the fence about getting a lensbaby because it just seemed gimmicky...but you have pulled off some gorgeous shots with it. This one is almost beyond words. As always good stuff.

The contrasting patterns on the ball and brick are awesome - you're starting to really get the hang of this lens.

Hi, nice to meet you!

This is very nice! I always excited to see the photograher behind the camera, especially a photo with great talents like you.

That's pretty nifty ;)

comment by SteveO at 08:30 AM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

Wow, cool photo, is it really the worlds biggest mirror ball? How big is it? I love the effect of the lens baby too, yesterdays shot was fantastic and the war of the worlds thing had me looking at all the trailers for the new cruise/spielberg film.

Another thing, im not sure if its your site or our dogy proxy server here in work but for the past few days, everytime i go to your site i get a message "Cannot find file://\\abcdefgabcdefg........ which keeps going for about 5 lines, then i press ok and have to refresh the page. It took a couple of goes today, like i say it could be our proxy, but its only your site in the last few days where it happens.

Cool self-portrailt. Where is the world's largest mirror ball?

comment by randomlove at 11:58 AM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

Awesome shapes. Are you touching the lens' edge?

comment by VPra at 05:50 PM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

This is a better shot than your "gone to pieces." The edges are not distracting at all bringing the main focus of the picture to you. Still not a fan of the Lensbaby.

comment by twb at 06:18 PM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

excellent! and i have no issues with seeing more lensbaby-type shots :)

comment by Michael Czeiszperger at 06:48 PM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

Now that's a creative use of the lens baby!

I need to sit down now.

comment by djn1 at 09:15 PM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

Thanks everyone.

Garth: I think the Lensbaby can be used in a gimmicky way, but I think you can also use it creatively. I guess it's like anything else - you need to think about what it will do and what it's best suited for.

SteveO: nobody else has mentioned the problem but I'll look into it.

J.P.: it's in Blackpool - northwest England.

randomlove: the lensbaby has what could be called a focussing ring (the bit you hold onto to bend and compress it) – it's this that I'm holding.

Gord is Dead: yeah, I know what you mean. It was worse taking it though as the mirrorball spins round – it was quite disorienting.

comment by Ellie at 09:56 PM (GMT) on 22 April, 2005

nice - great application of the lensbaby.
i recently got one too and have been playing around with mine as well...they're fun, but take a little getting used to.
hopefully i'll find some time soon to do just that--
