I suspect that this may be one of those shots that I like more than you do, but for some reason this is definitely my favourite from recent weeks (if not months).

I really like it! We've got reflections, we've got obscured views - and there you are, in the middle of it all!

comment by Bruce at 09:41 PM (GMT) on 28 April, 2005

I like the effect of the horizontal lines. It's like two pictures in one. My eye keeps going back and forth from foreground to background. Nice!

Seurat of Photography?
:)
Lovely idea and amazing result! Well done.

Every now and then you get a photo that you're really happy with - I find that it's these photos that make it all worthwhile.

This is very much a 'Chromasia' shot with the reflections and added interest of the rolling shutter. Very good.

comment by Juice at 10:56 PM (GMT) on 28 April, 2005

It's an awesome shot. It's really interesting because at first glance it looks like you are turned around and facing the characters who are further away and taking a picture of them, which is weird because how would you be taking a picture of yourself with your back turned. Even with close inspection you couldn't quite determine which way you're facing if you didn't know that it was you taking the shot, you know what I mean? Very intriguing.

I think this might be a mutual feeling shot. Awesome, just awesome. There's nothing like a good reflection shot.

comment by Tobin Rogers at 11:11 PM (GMT) on 28 April, 2005

This is cool. I am trying so hard to figure out what I am looking at. My eye is out of control. I love it!

comment by Thinh at 11:22 PM (GMT) on 28 April, 2005

Over the past couple of years, I've learnt that you can't please everyone all the time. This photo today may not appeal to everyone (although everyone seems to like it), but it's all a matter of what YOU like. If YOU like it then nothing else matters right?

What is the object in the background that's causing the scanline-like effect? Security grill behind a window?

comment by VPra at 11:53 PM (GMT) on 28 April, 2005

Much better improvement from yesterday's shot David. The down side? I wish you would've tooken the picture with you completely to the right of the image, or you in the deadcenter to get nice "symmetry."

Yes, this is great. The texture give it all. Very nice.

very nice- modern painting feel and how often do you get to have yourself in one of those? :)

amazing pic.. i love the effect of the horizontal lines..:)

very cool dave, suprising amount of detail from the reflection.

Man, is that ever a game for the eyes. Nice illusion, Dave. What is it, glass in front of a shutter? I wasn't so sure about it at first, because it toyed with my eyes too much. But a couple of glances makes it easier.

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 03:39 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

I think you like it a bit more than I do ;) I guess I just like your portraits a bit better. Though I have to say it is intresting, took me a minute to grasp it.

comment by Matt at 04:55 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

Amazing job with this shot. Did you combine two shots?

comment by Guilherme Pinto at 05:21 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

Was this image flipped horizontally as well? I can see the # 78 on the reflection... Intriguing...

comment by jcyrhs at 05:37 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

Strikingly DISTRACTING!!! You've a great eye for these special shot dave! Really like to see you go into the "experimenting" direction. But do pop in a few of those wonderful tone + colour + contrast shots once in a while yah!?

*look*-----------------> ----------------> pretty tiring for the eye....

comment by Mark at 06:33 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

The texture on this composition is crazy! Very trippy!

interesting mirror, like as your mirror ball cut.

tienes puesto un australian coat, so, ¿donde esta el sombrero?

comment by flygirl at 08:04 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

I think it's great, not sure if it's a reflection or a see through shot though... Anyways, it's perfectly done and very inspiring... Good job, as always...

comment by Gill at 10:48 AM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

It's fascinating and frustrating in equal measure

comment by Turfdigger at 06:10 PM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

Transparency? Reflection? A bit of both?
Great for exercising the ol' eye muscles:-)
Love that this appears to alternate between saturated and desaturated...

comment by Pramesh at 07:35 PM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

It's one that makes you look twice. At first glance I thought it was a shot through some semi-transparent door, quickly realizing that it's mostly a reflection... and now looking back at it again, I realize that indeed the door is somewhat transparent. I guessing a sports apparel clothing store?

comment by Smallest Photo at 09:28 PM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

I love the perspective of this shot.

comment by djn1 at 10:45 PM (GMT) on 29 April, 2005

Thanks everyone. And to clear up any confusion: this is obviously a reflection in a shop window, behind which is a metal shutter, through which you can just make out some of the contents of the shop. So, in retrospect, I guess I should have titled this one 'on three planes' rather than two.

comment by Guilherme Pinto at 06:09 AM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

aha! that's what the #78 is... Is a shirt, though the glass, through the mesh, hanging inside a store. Tricky!

comment by michael singer at 11:13 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

i like this one very much, actually, one can see it as a paraphrase of photography.

besides, i always wonder how you achieve to preserve the sharpness in your images after downsizing them for the web.

comment by Tim Walker at 11:32 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

It's no wonder this is a favorite of yours. It's fantastic, like a really good puzzle to figure out -- once you do, you're proud. It's exquisite. Very nicely done.
