I went out this afternoon with John from shotsphotography and we wandered along the beach between Blackpool and St. Annes, and I think it's probably been my most succesful photographic outing in quite some time. I've had a quick look through most of the shots, and have post-processed eight or nine, and think I have six shots (including this one) that I'll definitely put up at some point or another. Which, given recent standards, is a complete miracle ;-)

glad you had a good day dave, always a big boost when you bag more than a few shots. I can see myself walking up this beach now, with the dogs, ruining those lovely tracks :P. I think the sepia is spot-on for this one.

This is absolutley gorgeous!!

Intresting leading line...rather, two leading lines. And the toning is nice, I like how it gets darker towards the right.

This is a really sweet shot, great lines.

I've been checking back here daily for a couple of months, but never posted (quite ironic how I hate it when people do that on my blog!) - this shot is great. Echo the above comments, the sepia effect and toning is spot on, and I know what you mean about successful days shooting really giving you a boost. I got out today for an hour and came back with 15 or 20 decent photos. Check them @ www.adamswords.co.uk

Very mysterious... what are the two small spots on the skyline at the left? To my (possibly tilted) eye, the horizon does not appear flat - needs rotating a touch to the left. Proboably appears this way because the ground is dark where it meets the sky on the right, but light on the left?

comment by aashish vishnoi at 01:50 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

amazing feel of the tyre tracks.

comment by Jay at 02:47 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

Great shot!
I love how they seem to go into infinity.

The choice of color (or lack of it) is perfect.

This is the chromasia that we all know and love!

comment by Pramesh at 03:00 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

beautiful shot. i would love to know your post-processing technique. your images have wonderful contrast.

comment by P at 03:14 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

beautiful composition. once again, half the job is in seeing the shot in the first place. 99% of us would probably have walked on past these tire tracks, without thinking of how they'd look from this angle.

comment by ajp at 05:24 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

Nice close focus wide angle shot here. I'm a big fan of you clorization techniques DJ... do you use the duotone function in PS to do that after B/W conversion or do you just invent it each time. Looks like the desert, even though I know it must be the beach. Great shot.

comment by Tobin Rogers at 06:39 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

Wonderful. To find design in something we look over everyday is great. There are tire tracks all over the place. Nice work in capturing images that encourage many of us to look in different directions.

comment by Eric at 07:11 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

very nice photo. Love the lines in it.

comment by John at 08:33 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

Great one this Dave. I great example of using patterns, texture, contrast and composition. I had a great day except I got a burnt head.

But again this is a strong image.

comment by Alex at 10:10 AM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

~*releases grasp of dave's neck*~ FINALLY. i was beginning to worry you'd lost your 'thing' (the whole surreality thing i e-mailed you about back in the day) but evidently not! seems as though it was of paramount importance that you went back to your roots.. lol.. lets be honest here - a crap load of your jaw-dropping shots have come from the coast ^_^ anyways! um.. i'm just wondering - i know you're all about posting an image a day and stuff, but there seems to be a few times (more of late) when you've had a lot of doubt in what you've submitted for viewing.

don't do that :|

the vast majority of photoblogs.org attendees have been here, and everyone is WELL aware of the standard you're capable of producing. though i understand that chromasia is about self-development and whatnot, please please PLEASE ensure you do that at your very best level.. 'slong as you keep a level head and an open mind, who knows what you're capable of? ~*pats you*~ now be good :|

OFFTOPIC: i'm about to go blow my month's wage on a Tamron 90mm Macro (Di) lens. whats your take? tis that or a Sigma 105mm.. but i heard the former was the way to go :| er.. drop me a line. i e-mailed Archie (whateverland.com) first, as he's my main Nikon inform..ee but er.. he's not responded yet.. so i just thought i'd ask you instead. ~*nods*~ yep.

Beautiful texture and perspective

comment by David at 03:45 PM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

Your sepia beach pictures are my favorites of all your images. Another good one - an otherworldly drive into infinity!

comment by Raffi at 05:37 PM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

I love the lack of colour and the detail in the tracks. I wish we had big empty lands like this around here. lol

comment by jcyrhs at 05:48 PM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

wonderful lines!!! The tone is amazing... great composition! I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!!

comment by JoshH at 06:44 PM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

I love the sepia tones.

And the size of the vehicle that made the tracks changes if I imagine you kneeling or way up high : )

And this one looks good on black, too.

comment by djn1 at 06:52 PM (GMT) on 30 April, 2005

Thanks everyone.

Paul: cheers. It's the first time in weeks that I've come back with more than a couple of shots that I'm happy with.

Nick: the dots on the horizon are a JCB. For some reason they were digging up sand and carting it away in lorries.

Pramesh: this was desaturated then colourised with the Curves tool.

ajp: no, I don't use the duotone function, but I don't invent it each time either. Basically I use one of a few techniques to get the grayscale image (Hue/Saturation, Channel mixer, etc) then use Curves to adjust the tones.

Alex: thanks, I think ;-) As for your question regarding macro lenses: I don't know. Check out some reviews and see what other people are saying.

Alex:

I checked them all out but to be honest the Canon wins hands down although it is more expensive.

Since you're not getting earrings or a necklace, I thought I'd make you something 'digital' -- a companion piece (if I may be so bold) to this shot. Taken from the other side of the world, this one's for you:
