This is a shot from on top of this structure and is where Paul and I were stood when we took the shot of the rather alien looking pier I put up the other day (it's 90 degrees to the right of this view).

Oh, and at the risk of boring people to death, this is the first of seven shots that feature this structure in one way or another; six are either views of the structure or views from it, and the seventh is an alternative view of the alien looking pier. The first five were taken when I was out with John the other afternoon and the last two are night shots, taken with Paul.

On another matter: if you haven't come across it yet go check out straymatter.com, particularly this shot.

Killer sky, Dave. Love how the cloud pattern mimics the tread detail on the structure's deck.

comment by Liisa Anderson at 08:48 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

awesome perspective and colors! the red of the rost makes a nice contradiction to the blue of the sky and ocean and the brown of the sand.

comment by bmoll at 08:54 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

Splendid. Knowing it's real (with some adjustments, but still:) while it looks so unreal - strange feeling. Great colours and sky and that rusty metal :) b

wow, this is my favourite yet of this structure. lovely textures and a beautiful deep sky.

comment by David at 09:03 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

Fantastic photograph, the lines, texture, and colors and it looks like a scene from MYST Surreal

fabulous shot dave, the detail really came out in the deck.

comment by Jasper at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

Great contrast in this one! Did you use a pola filter? The black-blue-ish sky looks that way.

comment by ps at 10:08 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

I like how the shot seems to be moving you towards the object in the center. The clouds also look amazing. Great capture.

comment by Juice at 11:13 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

It seems like you can't go wrong with this thing. Another awesome shot, as usual. I really like the rusty things next to the wooden posts, they're sort of odd aren't they.

comment by Fyse at 11:23 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

I've been following your blog for a while, and you consistently produce the best shots. Other than great composition and choice of exposure etc, there's a certain quality to you shots that I can't quite put my finger on. What's the secret? The quality of your lenses? The camera itself?

comment by Nancy at 11:53 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

I am liking this shot of that thing. I look forward to other ways you represent it

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 11:57 PM (GMT) on 3 May, 2005

Nice framing, and no cropping required! I definitally love the colours and the water. Plus the floor has an intresting texture too. It is a very intresting picture, I do like it.

This reminds me a lot of the Myst series of games...great shot

comment by kate at 12:57 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

oh, man...;)

love the reddish pink of the water- subtle but nice play off the rust - did you do anything to it or was that all setting sun reflecting into water?

comment by zac at 01:07 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

stunning shot! it's no wonder your site is so popular. images like this are a testament to your skill.

comment by Alexander at 01:11 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Really love the tones and colors here, David. The fact that all of the posts on the right side aren't exactly even and that mysterious object at the end make another striking image.

comment by frisky at 02:04 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

wow. i was wondering why you never actually took a picture on TOP of this structure before... good to see this! beauty!

comment by hungaro at 02:36 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

wonderful
love the colors and perspective

comment by VPra at 04:23 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

WOW! I've been waiting for you to put up a picture that would leave me amazed and the colors here just did it for me

comment by ajp at 06:23 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Great job! You've managed to capture such a wide dynamic range here. How long did it take you to process this? Did you use the camera bracketing feature? I love that wide angle lens, it really does make a picture look very different from other lenses. I wonder if others have noticed it too? I'm not just talking about the perspective, but the tones, the compression, it's just different.

welcome to the cyber world of chromasia. :-)

comment by Adriana at 07:13 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

OK you did it, Now I want to go and Know that structure, so let me know if theres any airplain disccount to fly to UK. (lol)

comment by jcyrhs at 10:29 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

This is such an intriuging photograph... I have mixed feelings regarding the structure but the sky is definitely a weak point of mine. I wonder how much emphasis you put on the sky relative to the structure... The alien structure sort of leads me till the tower and then up into the sky. But the struggle for attention between the sky and the amazingly detailed structure makes me rather uncomfortable.

Nonetheless, it's such a sharp and saturated photograph. GREAT JOB. It'll be another amzing one if you convert it to your usual out of the world sepia tone. (i'm still trying to imitate...unsuccessfully though)

comment by nZ at 10:40 AM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Spectacular photo, my favorite! I like so much the color of sea in the right side, but why of the darkness in the sky on the right?
It's so symmetric and asymmetric at the same time...! If I could explain in italian I'd make myself plain. :o)

comment by Skauce at 12:43 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

I do like the colours, and the lead in to the focal point.... Something about the centering is bothering me though. Is it centered? I think it is, but I'm questioning it. I don't know.

Out of curiousity: What's the point of this structure? Art? It's nice.

Be sure to visit my site! haha >shameless plug of sorts<

comment by David H-W at 02:36 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Very arresting shot - love the perspective and the fab sky. Great work as always.

comment by Magnus von Koeller at 03:32 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Hehe... Well, with all those enthusiastic comments, I don't even want to write my criticism anymore. :) Well, while I do agree the shot has a nice, Myst-like feel to it, I also find it a little boring. But maybe that's just me.
The actual reason for this post, though, is that I wanted to thank you for the link to straymatter -- I just love it, the only problem being that it doesn't export an RSS feed. :) Thanks.

AWESOME!!!

comment by Darren at 05:58 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Such a beautiful sky. And the structure looks great--what character.

comment by reallybites at 06:04 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

wow i love the sky! its so bluee.

comment by coqui at 06:28 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

it's a beautiful photo... something about the contrast between the blue shade of the sky and the purple/lavender on the ground right where it meets the sky creates some tension for me... but hey, you're such a better photographer than i am... : )... so i shouldn't critique...

i LOVE how the perspective leads the eye to the focal point...

good work!

comment by Weston Boyd at 06:37 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

Very awesome, alien feeling. I agree that it gives quite a MYST feel also...

It's just a really....last man alive sci-fi kind of picture.

There's something wonderfully hyper-real about the colours in this one. When I looked at it at work earlier (pc) it looked a teensy bit oversharpened, but now (mac) it looks great.

Looks like a shot across a desert from some exotic oil workings actually. Never guess it was sunny Blackpool!

comment by Andreas at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 4 May, 2005

This is a really good color pic! Here the colors really serve their purpose!
- it's a lovely classy feel to it!
