A couple of people mentioned cryogenic suspension after looking at yesterday's shot, and I guess that's one of the things it brought to mind for me, as does this shot. But while yesterday's shot was relatively peaceful (to my mind at least), this one seems much darker. The moment, perhaps, when you wake up from that dreamless sleep, to the full realisation of a world that's not quite as you expected. Or maybe I've just watched too many sci-fi films ;-)

Let me know how you think the two compare.

(If you're interested, there's a relatively straight shot of this scene here).

Both are great shots, but this one is my favorite. Very spooky "Blade Runner" kind of thing. The quirky angle and the lensbaby add to the feeling of speed. I am so glad that I don't have to commute. The daily grind is deadening. All those people sharing the space and yet never connecting. Strange image.

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 10:14 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

Well, the photos you put up are definitally better than the straight shot. I guess that is what looking at something differently does for ya. I prefer yesterdays though to this one. This one is more darker though, like more cryogenic. But I guess Im just too fond of yesterdays.

comment by David Kapp at 10:16 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

Looks like there is a split vote right now, but I prefer this shot. Along with the darker mood & feel, the people in the foreground are in better focus. I found that a bit distracting on yesterdays shot.

comment by Frank Owen at 10:19 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

I definately prefer this shot, but yesterdays definately has its merits. This one just has a whole creepy futaristic feel to it, which i totally dig. Great shot.

comment by Tobin Rogers at 10:34 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

Wonderful shot. I prefer this second one to the first. I think I like that there are a few more faces showing. And the newspaper really ads to the idea of morning commute. Angle, color and all are great.

comment by blake at 10:40 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

I prefer the first shot. This one has a sort of GATACA cleanliness to it, but I prefer the color and faces of yesterday's shot.

comment by Beth at 11:09 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

What a great eye you have! These are both super shots, but I prefer todays. It's so clear and sleek - very sci-fi :)

comment by juan at 11:29 PM (GMT) on 11 May, 2005

it's gorgeus.

I like the tone in this shot better than the first one, but both are really good shots. Nice perspective in this mini series.

truly worrying, Matrix here we come.

Ditto: the similarities to Dystopic worlds. I love when photography is able to transform, transend the present reality into a distant or altered sphere.
Good work as is your usual.
I really envy you some of the shooting locations in your images.

I like yesterday's one better. There's more of a focus on the black-haired woman is yesterday's. In today's one, the subject isn't as clear since there are two or three people in focus.

comment by izzy at 01:01 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Amazing! Just Amazing~

comment by Shane at 01:17 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Incredible shots! I like yesterday's better due to overall pallet and the focus (and lack thereof) on the commuters.

comment by lee at 01:18 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Your eye and imagination are wonderful to witness! Is the reflection of the person second from the back you?

comment by hungaro at 01:24 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

no idea how you ook this one
either way it is great

i prefer this one to yesterday's
more of clear look, I think

Wow! Looks like a futuristic science fiction trailer. Definately Blade Runner. Also interesting contrast in expressions between the second and third passenger.

Oh My God! Today's shot is so cool! I couldn't find out what it is. Initially I thought you took this shot from an escalator but it doesn't make any sense. I found out it's from a train. This is definitely the best shot since the water droplets pics. Incredible!

comment by Adriana at 03:01 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

I've been xtremaly busy lately, but i have taken the time to see your site once per day. The last few shots were all great. Besides that, I must confess that when I saw yesterday's entry. just thought that it looked like some sci-fi scene, but have not a clue of where it came from. Today seeing at your straight shot I understood every thing, maybe it was because i was so tired to think about it. Maybe it's because I am to slow to understad :(.

comment by juan at 03:08 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

The action is phenominal. Reflections are what puts the spin on the rest of the day.

comment by jcyrhs at 03:27 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

I prefer the one yesterday...The dark feeling for this one is perhaps a touch too dark for me (like dead people kinda dark). Great perspective from the straight shot though!

comment by jcyrhs at 03:40 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

btw dave... how did you adjust the skin tone in this picture to make it look rather sepia yet still retain a slight pinkish tone? it's amazing. pls help the newbie!

comment by Guilherme Pinto at 04:19 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

My vote goes for today's. I like the more subtle tones on today's. Both are awesome, by the way.

David -

I had a song called Dirt by Phish playing when I looked at this shot. Please please listen to this song and look at this shot again (if you don't have it I will send it to you). It was a good moment in space and time.

comment by Garth at 04:52 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Oh yeah...and never show the straight shot again..it takes away the magic.

comment by juan at 04:53 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

i do not have the song.

comment by juan at 05:11 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

I love both of them. When the page first loaded I thought this was some sort of amusement park ride. . . both are really nice, Dave.

Thank you for showing the "straight shot" -- while I agree that in some ways it could be sort of analagous to a magician showing the audience what was up their sleeve, I'm sure I speak for many who like to see the method behind the madness (or in this case, genius) so we can learn. . .

=)

comment by sandro at 08:08 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

You're rignt: it's very difficolt choose one of these pictures... This is mor dynamic and less meditative, the first one the opposite... the first remind me to Robert Frank, this second one remind me to a science fition movie... Maybe you don't have to choose one, but simply show both separately in differetn contest...

comment by carpal tunnel syndrome at 10:11 AM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Fantastic - there weren't four guys hanging around on horseback near the scene were there? If there is a channel between the land of the living and the land of the dead then my guess is it would look a bit like this. Very evocative shot

comment by RainKing at 12:09 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

This is totally Minority Report stuff.

comment by Srijith at 12:10 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Great shots.

Trying to guess the setting - I can see seats, windows and people. Looks like people sitting inside a subway and their reflection bounced off from some shiny surface on top.

comment by the farmers wife at 01:07 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

OK - here's my guess. You were on a commuter train wth an upper level, and this was taken in the space between the floor and the lower railing. You would never figure it out from the previous shot, and it does prove one thing.....that you have a very well developed eye for spotting an image.

comment by the farmers wife at 01:10 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Ooops sorry, should have looked at the straight shot. I've never been on a train that had a mirrored surface like that.

comment by Mary-Mia at 02:15 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

I like yesterday's better. Something about those colors and the way that one lady just pops out. It made me smile, and this one made me kind of tilt my head to the side and study it more. Nothing wrong with that, but the one yesterday had a more immediate emotional impact. It's too bad you couldn't do a blind test, so half the visitors to your site saw this one first and half saw yesterday's pic first. I wonder if reactions would change depending on which one you bonded with first.

comment by Jay at 02:59 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Wow....
I couldn't figure out what this was....
(The only thing I could figure out was you were looking down at some train with a glass roof :-p )

It is incredible how much you can manipulate with Photoshop.

Great Job!

I like this one too. The focus is great!

comment by su-yin at 05:53 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

i like this one better...i think it's more "distorted", more freaky, and therefore, cooler. ;)
i wonder what the passengers would say if they knew you were photographing them using the reflection in the overhead compartment...
but whatever, coz this is fantastic!

comment by /\/\J at 08:34 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

both supremely excellent...i like this better tho. more of a mystery feel to it. very cool

comment by Robert at 09:06 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

Nice stuff. I seem to be in the minority - I like yesterday's image better, mostly because it was even more ambiguous.

comment by sam pardue at 09:48 PM (GMT) on 12 May, 2005

super nice. I have to say I like today's even more than yesterday's

These images are absolutely unbelievable -- the best use of the lensbaby technique I think I've ever seen, both conceptually and technically. Very nicely done.

comment by quarlo at 04:59 AM (GMT) on 13 May, 2005

I think I prefer this one. Both are far out.

comment by David at 02:55 PM (GMT) on 13 May, 2005

Wow--really fantastic.

comment by Jim at 02:55 PM (GMT) on 14 May, 2005

Very interesting idea on this one. This definitely seems darker than the previous, but I like this one a lot better. The focus of the one women sitting farther back draws you into the picture. It reminds me of an add for a sci-fi thriller movie, like Minority Report or The Sixth Sense. Very creative take on the original image!

comment by Andre at 09:11 PM (GMT) on 15 May, 2005

Very science fiction like, the blackness in the relfection is what is fascinating me.
