I didn't have a great deal of time today but took a walk around town and spotted this guy, and judging by the people who walked past, the poster had a powerful subliminal effect.

And thanks again for all the great comments on my entry for the Photo Friday Space challenge. 108 comments is quite something :-)

Ha...his expression says it all!

Superb. Wonderful shadows and lights. Lucky you having such a great occasion. I wonder if it'is only a matter of luck.. Maybe I should watch my way more carefully.

Great shot, very well done ! If only this man had known how you're good at taking pictures ! Does he know ?..

comment by bobr at 08:34 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Great shot! The juxtaposition of poster and man really works. Did he realize you had taken his picture? The 20D is not exactly quiet.

comment by miles at 08:40 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Nice street capture.

comment by djn1 at 08:45 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Thanks.

bmoll: I think it was lucky he was sat in front of the sign.

bobr: I spoke to him first and asked if I could take his picture.

comment by Chris at 09:07 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Quite humorous :D

comment by Bali Boy at 09:23 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Absolutely stunning : D The sign above the down-trodden looking guy is just perfect...

comment by Rachel at 09:40 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Images with words in them are a particular favorite of mine, and this is one of my favorite examples ever. What a find!

comment by Heidi at 09:47 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

As ever, very well done! Ah djn, may I ask you a question re your site ?! Why don't you use the target="blank" code for your outgoing links in order to prevent people from throwing themselves out of the net? Do you maybe have a philosophy why you don't use this code? If so, can you maybe share it with me! Thanks, Heidi

comment by Aegir at 10:00 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Now how do you maintain a white pair of jeans when you're homeless? I can't even do that and I've got a very nice washing machine... respect due.

comment by canon-craig at 10:04 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

wow the irony from the words on the poster and the guy on the floor is amazing. a great image.

comment by the farmers wife at 10:14 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

An interesting juxtaposition....the goofy/frightened look of the models in the poster, and the tired, resigned look of the guy sitting on the curb. I'm surprised you got such a natural looking pose from him after you asked permission to take the photo. When I try that approach, they either look directly into the camera or become "stiff". Very interesting photo.

comment by The Plankmeister at 10:22 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Absolutely fantastic image. One of the best I've seen on here.

David: When you ask people if you can take their picture, what sort of reactions do you get? And how do you go about it? I'm a bit of a chicken at that sort of thing... hence the reason I don't have any "people pictures" yet :(

And also, I'd be interested to know how you achieve the B/W effect in PS. Do you use image calculations and mix channels? To my eye it appears the red and blue channels have been combined, though I could be very wrong...

Once again... incredible image. This whole site is a magnificent inspiration to me.

comment by David at 10:46 PM (GMT) on 19 May, 2005

Wow, this image is amazing.

Holy Shit!

comment by .:pvav.photoblog:. at 07:02 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

This is a great shot. I like the choice of black and white. Nice job.

comment by jcyrhs at 07:43 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

the poster is really funny... did he realise what's writtne on it?

Anyway this picture is great!! an inspiration for street photography really... btw, its that your shadow in the foreground?

Sometimes the people in my country are not as susceptible to larger cameras like a digital SLR. There is almost an unspoken rule that street photography should be kept under wraps, sneaking around with a smaller camera in disguise... ask for permission to take pictures and you'll be greeted with weird looks and stares... =)

comment by J.P. at 08:03 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

his pants, so bright.

comment by zjootsuite at 08:24 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Yeah amazing the combination. You can't miss it.

comment by tobias at 08:34 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

I really don't know but he looks like someone that would have some interesting comments to make.

He reminds me very much of Craig Charles.

I always wonder about these photos and how comfortable I feel with them. I feel that they are almost a way of reminding us that we are better off than others and I don't like that feeling.

Everyone will say it's just me but I'm am sure you all undersatnd my point.

As for the composition, yes it is rather fortuitous.

comment by Andre at 09:38 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Brilliant - did you diffuse the image in post-production?

comment by Mike Golding at 10:10 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Great image... but I find the two signs on the doors exceptionally distracting and when I first looked at it my eyes went to the exclamation marks before it went to the words on the poster. Dave I think you should clone them out they serve no purpose other than to distract from the irony.

comment by Ben at 10:36 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Great composition, makes you look again and again.

comment by David H-W at 11:04 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Well composed and lovely tone. Great that the guy is off-centre.

comment by smo at 11:32 AM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Hello!
I just wanted to say hi and tell you that I visit your blog every day and I really like your photos! You and a few other photobloggers has inspired me to try to make my own photoblog.

Have a nice day! Kerstin

comment by Rick Burns at 03:36 PM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Great shots David! How did you convert/tone yesterday's and today's images? I know you've talked about it before and if you would refer me to an earlier post I check it out.
Many thanks ,Rick

comment by Robert at 03:56 PM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

One of my favorites from your recent shots, David. I'm usually a fan of color shots, but this one definitely works best the way you've posted it.

comment by Tom B at 04:12 PM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

The sign, his expression and the overall composition and tone of this photo make it another winner. Very nice as usual David.

comment by Bev at 05:05 PM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Visiting your site has become a bit of a morning ritual for me. I look forward to discovering your daily pics. Last Friday night, my husband and I just sat in front of the computer mesmerized as we went through all your archived pictures. Just to let you know the guy in the suit on the beach is my desktop for the week.

You give aspiring shutterbugs inspiration. I thank you.

Bev

comment by VPra at 05:27 PM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Great shot Dave. Can you please tell me what you do in photoshop to get this kind of brown, sepiaish tone on your pictures. I have one pic that i would like to do the same to, but i don't really know how to make it as good as you do.

comment by wookiee at 06:51 PM (GMT) on 20 May, 2005

Awed.

"And by the Mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allah's) Forgiveness for them, and consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah, certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust in Him"

WELL, I JUST JUDGED SOMEBODY SOOOOOOOOO FAST, AND DIDN'T FEEL THAT GOOD..YEP, I JUDGED THEM INTERNALLY, BUT STILL, FELT BAD..I THINK I AM SUPPOSED TO BE MUCH MORE GENTLE.........BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN NOT BEING CAUSIOUS...THATS A DIFFERENT STORRY...I GUESS ITS JUST A VERY FINE LINE BETWEEN THE BOTH.

JUST A THOUGHT

comment by Martin Fuchs at 07:52 PM (GMT) on 23 May, 2005

hi there, a good contrast between the poster and the guy sitting beneath it. i'd probably took a few more frames to probably see people passing by in the left...

comment by Tiago P. at 11:25 AM (GMT) on 24 May, 2005

Like Mike Golding, I too found the exclamation points a little distracting. maybe by cropping the image like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/manancialdanoite/djn1.jpg

would help to focus the viewer's attention on the message. Nevertheless, a true classic.

comment by cikal61 at 03:10 PM (GMT) on 25 May, 2005

great moment.... and nice color too!
