I went up to Morecambe today with John from shotsphotograhpy and didn't manage too many decent shots, in fact this is the only one that I'm remotely pleased with.
Oh well, tomorrow's another day ;-)

Wow I love this photo David! The sharpness and tones again are fantastic! Great composition, and it just looks and feels very balanced and aesthetic. Great work! :)
Great texture in this shot. I just want to reach out and touch the rope. Terrific colour too. You say you are only remotely pleased with this shot; I think it's up there with the best of them.

The vignetting makes it for me. Great image!

If I came away with just this image then I'd be overjoyed. My eyes are continuously being thrown around the frame - and if they could speak they'd say, "Look at that gorgeous rope, phwoar!"

Ha Ha - Only joking, No I love it and I have got a picture of you taking this photo so that will probaly go up tommorow together with the other brill ones I got (another joke)
Great photo.

One of your bettter shots!

Hmmm... shouldn't it have been a blurrier background than this at f/5.0? Or am I getting stuck in too much technicality?
This is a fantastic shot. One of those that just leaps out of the screen at you early in the morning (its 0730). The colours and composition are just perfect.
comment byDutch PhotoDay at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 9 June, 2005
Great shot! I like the details of the old rope and the depth of field.
I really love all your works. I added you as my link. Keep up the good work!

Nice saturation, especially on the brown rope. Funny how I can't imagine this same shot with clear skies.
comment byPaul Boes at 11:48 PM (GMT) on 9 June, 2005
Great Shot... The colors in the rope make this shot complete.
comment byLaurie at 12:14 AM (GMT) on 10 June, 2005
I really like this picture. I think the DOF is great as well as the over all colors. Great job.
comment byAlec Long at 12:23 AM (GMT) on 10 June, 2005
To respond to Dhwanit, probably not at 17mm.
However, the depth of field on this one--in my opinion--should probably have been widened just a bit in front to include those bottom two coils of the forward knot.
The light is wonderful, David. Just the right amount of sheen on the ropes.
comment byDavid at 12:32 AM (GMT) on 10 June, 2005
What? You're human?
This is good reminder of what I need to do when feeling stuck and fruitless - aim at an interesting detail. Thanks for the reminder!

I grew up in Morecambe a life time ago. The rectory by police station was where I called home. My parents used to say we lived in Polton-le-sands (sp?) to distance themselves from the Morecambe jokes but it doesn't sound any more glamorous does it? As a kid I loved living by the sea and the glorious run-down feel of the place. We moved the day after the first live-aid and I've rarely been back since. Next time I'm back in the UK I'll have to make time to go back and see if it's anything like how I remember.

Wowo this one is definitely cool! Love the definition on the ropes, and the oxydized colors.
David, you say, "This is the only one I was pleased with."
And I say to myself, "I wish I could take just one photo as good as this."
The wonderful and inspiring thing about your site and some of the others is that they help us develop a vision of what we'd like to achieve in our photography, and then learn something through work, experimentation and trial and error.
The colorations on the rope are wonderful, showing the wear pattern. Thanks for sharing your talent.

All i want to tell you is that i respect your work, i respect your passion and i envy you for your perseverance.
Keep surprising us David, keep telling us that there is a great picture in our everyday life, a moment worth shared with us.

I think the image is good but maybe a little too clean and not quite rustic enough. I'm into this as you know, and what I'm thinking is, what about ISO 1600 or add a bit of grian through CS?
I really like this one - that rope looks three-dimensional and the colours are wonderfully desaturated. About the DOF - I think that with the 1.6x crop factor f5 becomes effectlvely f8, which would explain why the background is not more out of focus.

If only I didn't live at the other end of the country I would love the opportunity to attend a chromasia masterclass - I have the right qualifications and would fit right in: very little hair (and what there is of it is grey); I wear glasses, blue jeans, stout boots and one of those waistcoats with loads of pockets - oh, and I have a camera :)
Nice shot Dave, I particularly like the colour palette in this one.

I recognised the boats from some photos I took not so long ago (at peterholloway.com/photofolder.asp?folder=Morecambe). I've cetainly learned something from your choice of shots. Thanks!

Thanks everyone, I wasn't expecting so many comments on this one.
John: thanks for the portrait :-)
Dhwanit: at 17mm f/5.0 gives a reasonable DoF.
Alec: yes, you're right, a bit more DoF wouldn't have gone amiss.
Martin: I'm not all that familiar with Morecambe but it doens't look like it changed any time recently, at least not substantially.
Valentin: the reaction that chromasia has received always amazes me.
tobias: I've still not found a way of working with digital noise (or CS grain) that I'm entirely happy with.
fraxinus: if you're ever in the area, let me know.
Katy: my apologies for the disorientation ;-)
DNEGEL: as a rule, no, I don't reposition things that I shoot.
Excellent, your best in a while I'd say
Beautiful...
