Ok, so the title's a bit of an exaggeration, but I do like the fact that the left and right sides of the shot appear to be of different (albeit similar) scenes.

Oh I love the tone on this and the clarity of the wood. The composition splits this picture in two but it still views as one. There is a tiny rock just on th bottom edge that you should have got Paul from Skinnybuzzard to re position for you.

David that is beautiful! I've just been admiring your sunset photos because i've been away for the weekend and not seen them till now. I've also been at the coast this weekend trying to get some long exposure seascapes but sadly was fairly unsuccessful due to so little time. This one is beautiful! I love the composition and colours, and of course the softness of the water. Lush! :)

I'm in love with whatever you did to the water. It looks almost as though it's moving. What did you do to achieve that effect?

comment by djn1 at 07:50 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

Kyle: I didn't do anything. This was a 30 second exposure, which is just about right to retain some sense of movement in the water.

comment by SteveO at 08:02 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

Great shot, the tones and the detail in the wood are amazing, and not to mention the water too. And oh yeah, i have seen Ioannis's pic of you lot and the manky fish, that thing was gross :-)

comment by OverSleeped at 08:29 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

It almost looks like an angels' beach leading to the clouds.

comment by MP at 08:48 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

Great picture. The water and sky coming together and wood disaperaring.
Did you use any filters for achieving a long exposer?

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 08:49 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

Very intresting! I like the fog/water effect...and the rocks as the water is going near them are very intresting...it all seems very surreal. I like it :)

comment by ps at 09:17 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

just 30s... ;]

hello from le havre france

comment by tobias at 10:29 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

Who needs children when you take shots like the last four.

I hate to criticise but I feel these shots illustrate the exact reason why we visit...

E-theeee-real!

comment by Ioannis at 11:09 PM (GMT) on 26 June, 2005

The colour of the water is the best on this one... The wood is really cleas as well.. It even looks nice, whereas in real life it's just a dark rotting piece of wood...

comment by Rob at 12:16 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

the color and texture of that water is unreal. very very nice

comment by Andy at 12:21 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

Fanatastic shot, the water looks so surreal. Just wondered, how did you get the 30sec shutter speed at f14... did you use some additional filters to lengthen the shutter?

comment by R. Schutt: Life2O at 12:54 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

Very nicely done! It is almost dreamy.

comment by myla at 02:05 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

I really like this one, Dave. It seems like they're rising out of the water somehow. And the pebbles just under the surface -- really nice touch.

comment by Antonio Quirarte at 02:43 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

Great picture.
Did you use a polarized filter or any other kind?

comment by jcyrhs at 04:34 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

The sea doesn't look so much like the sea any more... the waves merges to seemingly form mist covering the "beach". The sharpness of the rocks on the beach takes away some attention from the fence(?)...

Love the overall feel... two diagonals splits from the wooden structure and the waves...
How i wish i can do that... but till i get my neutral density filter...or polarising filter... Gimme more!!

comment by TJ at 06:01 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

Wow! Excellent cloud effect of the waves. Do I see sky there?

Congrats Dave for the 'Time'ly mention! You deserve it!

Congrats on being on Time's 50 greatest blogs! I hope I can do as well in something, someday.

Really nice shot david. Congratulations.

comment by djn1 at 09:57 AM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

There seems to be a bit of confusion about how this one was shot: I didn't use any filters (ND or polarisers) as it was actually quite dark at the time - ten to eleven at night.

comment by owen at 12:31 PM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

This is a really beautiful shot. the colour of the water makes the scene look icy cold, although this was shot in midsummer. i see what you mean about looking an impossible Escher picture. I love the way the breakwatre slowly fades away in the distance.

comment by jane at 01:44 PM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

The water at the banks slightly exposing the rocks looks straight out of an animated film :-) Great photograph!

comment by Elvi at 04:07 PM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

Your shots are simply amazing. Every time I visit your website I'm suprised by the beautiness of your photos. They make me feel as if I'm on a holiday trip in a beautiful country.

You're definitely one of my favourites.

Wonderful long-exposure shot! It looks so fantastic, and feeling like dreaming.

comment by ratty at 07:35 PM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

i love the way the little rotting wooden wall disappears into the eerieness :)
very cool.

comment by Jules at 10:54 PM (GMT) on 27 June, 2005

As usual on your photoblog, wonderful shots... :-)

comment by jacek at 12:02 AM (GMT) on 28 June, 2005

excellent tones!

comment by RainKing at 09:58 AM (GMT) on 28 June, 2005

I'm not sure it's very Escher, but I really like the mood of this shot. The water seems ghostly.

comment by Peter Holloway at 03:45 PM (GMT) on 28 June, 2005

Is this really Blackpool? I live the other side of the estuary in Southport. I obviously haven't looked hard enough for photo opportunities along the coast. Beautiful image.

comment by btezra at 04:23 PM (GMT) on 28 June, 2005

~xlnt use of the diagonal here!~

comment by Raffi at 03:55 AM (GMT) on 29 June, 2005

I really like this because it makes the eye look towards the area where the mini-fence can no longer be seen. Sort of mysterious, really.

comment by Alastair at 08:16 AM (GMT) on 29 June, 2005

The groyne itself is pretty attractive too, for a groyne! I admire the effect the long exposure has given to the water; there's something to be said, too about the quality of the light during our late summer evenings; very atmospheric.

comment by Anil at 09:04 PM (GMT) on 29 June, 2005

A very well composed picture.

comment by Meredith at 01:52 AM (GMT) on 1 July, 2005

This shot it beautiful. I love the way the pilings just disappear into the photo. And the muted colors are great.

comment by Jordan at 07:31 PM (GMT) on 1 July, 2005

I have got to get out and do some more night photography. Between yourself, Bob of notraces and J.P. of Orbit1 I've got some simple supurb examples. Keep it up!

Gorgeous.

Brings back old memories of going to beach at Littlehampton. Inspires me to take pictures of the more simple things that have a lasting impact. We all have rocks, wood and water but nothing like an English break wall. Thanks again.

comment by sprock at 11:23 PM (GMT) on 20 July, 2005

Best images I have seen in a long time, very inspiring.

comment by jazz at 02:51 PM (GMT) on 24 July, 2005

i've been lurking your site, and i love the majority of your shots, but this one REALLY does it for me. if i had the cash i'd definitely purchase this one. keep up the fantastic work.
